THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE presented by Know Theatre of Cincinnati and UC College-Conservatory of Music through Oct. 24. Click here for more information on the production. I attended the opening night performance.

There were many individual elements that I enjoyed about this production. What wasn’t clear to me was the director’s overall concept for the show that unified them.

The ladies of the tower created some fun and zany characters, with Julie Netzer;s Innocenzia as my personal favorite. I snickered every time she closed a door. While the performances are over the top, visually it’s the opposite. All of the female characters are clean and pretty. The deformities, which could be exaggerated for some visual gags, are actually under-played. In the scenes involving 1 and 2, I understood what you were going for with the monotone delivery, but the comic timing wasn’t there to really sell it.

For the guys, Andrew Iannacci’s Christopher Columbus is almost as over-the-top, but he has a strange “self-awareness” quality that I found off-putting. Derek Snow is solid, but Abdul Haseeb seems to be the only normal person on stage. Brandon St. Clair Saunders as Talib Furozh is stuck in the middle, never quite matching the performance level of the ladies.

I did find the set design rather confusing, particularly stage right. Is that an opening to the outside and a door to another room on the same wall?

This play does boast one of the most memorable endings I’ve seen, and the special effects for that were surprising and worked really well.

Overall a fun, but uneven quasi-historical romp.

My rating: 4 out of 5.

I would enjoy hearing what you think about the show or my review. All I ask is that you express your opinion without attacking someone else’s opinion. You can post your comments below.

CCM’s 2015-2016 Studio Series Opens with Award-Winning Musical BIG RIVER: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Oct. 8-10

CCM opens its 2015-16 Studio Series with a new production of Roger Miller and William Hauptman’s BIG RIVER: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, playing Oct. 8 – 10, 2015, in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. Directed by Vince DeGeorge with musical direction by Steve Goers and choreography by Patti James, BIG RIVER: will keep audiences’ toes tapping for four performances.

Like all Studio Series productions, admission to BIG RIVER is free, but reservations are required. Tickets become available at the CCM Box Office at noon on Monday, Oct. 5.

Winner of three Tony awards, including Best Musical, BIG RIVER is an irrepressible adaptation of Mark Twain’s timeless tale. The show brings to life all of the characters from the original novel: Widow Douglas, the King and Duke, Pap Finn, Tom Sawyer and – of course – Huck and Jim.

Vince DeGeorge, newly appointed Assistant Professor and Joseph Weinberger Chair of Acting for the Lyric Stage at CCM, returns to the Cohen Family Studio Theater to direct BIG RIVER:. Formerly a Visiting Professor at CCM, his Studio Series productions of Blood Brothers and 110 in the Shade last season proved a smash with critics and audiences alike, so anticipation is high for his latest production in the Studio Theater. “I love to take things that are very large and distill them down to what is most elemental about them,” DeGeorge says of directing in CCM’s intimate black box performance space.

Last seen at CCM in an “expansive” 1994 Mainstage production, BIG RIVER will be very different this time around. “It’s an exciting challenge for me and it’s exciting for the students as well, because when you really distill things down, it allows the actors and the story to shine,” says DeGeorge of adapting a large musical for a small space. This applies to the music as well; the orchestrations are new for this production and will utilize a bluegrass quartet.

In addition to the cast and music, the technical elements will play a vital role in telling the story, “The show is very organic, very ‘of nature,’ and most of it takes place on the river. Lighting and sound are extremely important to place the audience in that world. Also, what’s brilliant about the set is that the designer kept stripping it down until we found a simple, clear language that supports the whole story,” DeGeorge explains.

A crucial piece of the story is the river itself. Over the last century, commentators have described the river in Twain’s novel as a powerful symbol of freedom and possibility for Huck and Jim. Accordingly, it is on the river where much of the musical’s action takes place. How will this iconic symbol be portrayed in such an intimate space? “Oh, I can’t give that away!” laughs DeGeorge.

DeGeorge’s production of BIG RIVER will enthrall audiences with its clarity and simplicity, and allow CCM’s “stars of tomorrow” to shine.

VIDEO: CCM Drama: PENTECOST Official Trailer

A play of politics and ideas, PENTECOST details the discovery of a painting stunningly similar to Giotto di Bondone’s The Lamentation in an abandoned church in Eastern Europe. If proven to pre-date the master’s work, the fresco will revolutionize Western Art. A dramatic power struggle ensues, as representatives from the worlds of art history, religion and politics stake their claims for the ultimate prize. The unexpected arrival of 12 asylum seekers sets events spiraling toward an explosive climax.

Performances run Sept. 30-Oct. 4. For more information visit https://behindthecurtaincincy.com/2015/08/31/pentecost-runs-sept-30-oct-4/.

Know Theatre’s 18th Season Continues With a Flippant Trip Back in Time, THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE

KNOW THEATRE’S 18TH SEASON CONTINUES WITH A FLIPPANT TRIP BACK IN TIME

THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE

by Charise Castro Smith
directed by Brant Russell
a coproduction with the University of Cincinnati CollegeConservatory of Music

An irreverent comedy about what it takes to rule the world. Almost.

KTC_Hunchback of Seville logoThe year is 1504. It’s a freakishly cold day in Spain, and the hunchbacked, adopted sister of the dying queen Isabella has to use her formidable intellect to contend with colonial genocide, a forbidden lover, a hellion of an heir, and the mess that is politics in a changing world. An irreverent comedy that turns historical atrocities on their heads in a Tarantinoesque romp, it’s a collaboration that brings CCM drama students to Know Theatre’s stage for a twisted history you never learned in school.

Know Theatre continues its 18th season (“We’re Adults Now!”) by heading back to college and joining forces with UC’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) for the regional premiere of THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE, a play that will make you think about and laugh at 16th Century Spanish monarchical politics and European colonialism like never before…especially if you never have at all (honestly, we hadn’t either.)

This production marks CCM Associate Professor of Drama and Hunchback director Brant Russell’s Know Theatre debut, along with the Know debut of 8 CCM Drama students. About playwright Charise Castro Smith, Russell says,

“[She] artfully weaves history and anachronism. The subtle variances of tone, the frequently less-subtle humor, and the savoring of the language all speak to me. In terms of content, this play is very much about anyone who’s ever been marginalized. This is the story of a woman who is denied so many privileges that others enjoy because she was born in a body different from those around her. And ultimately it’s a story about privilege, ethics, power, and the way we tell the story of our shared history.”

Adds Know Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford, about the coproduction aspect,

“We’re thrilled to enter into this partnership with CCM, the school where 50% of Know’s full time staff received our training. It’s a great way for us to reconnect with our alma mater, to offer students a chance to step outside of academia and into small professional theatre, and to continue to build connections across Cincinnati’s artistic scene. We’re so excited to get to play with this cast, this creative team, and this great script.”

CCM senior Colleen Ladrick plays the titular role of Maxima Terriblé Segunda, The Hunchback of Seville, a brilliant, agoraphobic atheist faced with some difficult decisions. Joining Colleen on stage are fellow CCM students Sydney Ashe, Rachel Baumgarten, Andrew Iannacci, Julia Netzer, Meg Olsen, Alice Skok, and Emily Walton. Rounding out the cast are another Know newcomer, Brandon St. Clair Saunders, an ensemble member of Strawdog Theatre Company in Chicago who just finished his sixth summer season with the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, and Derek Snow, who has appeared on numerous stages across the city for over 20 years, including Know Theatre, Performance Gallery, and Falcon Theatre.

Opening October 9th, THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE re-imagines history in the irreverent style you’ve come to expect at Know Theatre, Cincinnati’s Theatrical Playground. Come in and play!

Billy loses his job just as he learns that his wife is pregnant and, desperate to provide a decent life for his family, is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent “up there.” 15 years later, Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day and encounters the daughter he never knew. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love.
