Thompson House Hosts Tony Winner, Tour Vet for Workshop

Donna McKecknie.

NEWPORT (KY.) – Thompson House – Greater Cincinnati’s live music and creative hub – announces the first-ever event in its new Musical Theater Workshop Series – A Chorus Line Workshop. The workshop takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, and Sunday, Nov. 4, in the Tommygun Theater at Thompson House, 24 E. 3rd Street, Newport, Kentucky.

A Chorus Line Workshop will feature the talents of special guest artist Donna McKechnie – director Michael Bennett’s muse and the Tony Award-winning Cassie in the record-setting original Broadway company – and David Combs, who played Larry in the 1996-97 national tour of A Chorus Line.

“We’re thrilled to have two people so intimately familiar with the show to conduct this workshop,” said Cathy Creason, Thompson House artistic director. “They bring a special knowledge of the material, of both its creation and execution, that makes this workshop a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for area performers.”

The two-day workshop will focus on Michael Bennett’s choreography Saturday and on vocals and acting technique Sunday. Local musician Jared Adamsom will provide piano accompaniment both days.

Cost to register is $25 per day, or $40 to participate both days. A limited number of $10 observer tickets will also be available each day.

Registration opens and tickets go on sale Monday, Oct. 8. To register or to purchase tickets, please visit www.thompsonhousenewport.com and click on the calendar.

“We’re committed to providing the very best talent to the Greater Cincinnati arts community,” said Kirt Lee, Thompson House operating partner. “I think bringing Donna McKechnie and David Combs to Newport shows how serious we are and how artists around the country are responding to what we’re building.”

Both McKechnie and Combs will be available for interviews at the conclusion of each day’s workshop activities.

Thompson House will present a full-scale production of A Chorus Line next summer. The workshop is not only a unique learning opportunity, but also a chance for interested performers to get a leg up on the competition and begin preparing for auditions scheduled for Sunday and Monday, May 5 and 6, 2013.

Thompson House Ahead of Projections After First Quarter

NEWPORT (KY.) – Thompson House Newport – Greater Cincinnati’s live music and creative hub – is pleased with its position after three official months in operation.

“We had our soft opening May 18 and the official grand opening June 1,” said Kirt Lee, Thompson House operations partner. “We put some things in place early on and are trying to build our brand and grow our audience. It seems to be working so far. We’re happy with where this first quarter has taken us and are very excited about the new projects on the horizon.”

Thompson House has developed several standing theme nights – including a Sunday open mic night in its 60-seat Rockstar Lounge, and a Tuesday Broadway show tunes night, a Wednesday creative jazz workshop and a Friday jazz series in its 100-seat Heaven Parlor – to build an audience and pave the way to larger productions and concerts in the 650-seat Tommygun Theater.

Other fine arts options are on the way, beginning with the Sept. 20 kick-off of WordBeat, a monthly spoken word creative writing series for poets and authors to share their works. Thompson House has gallery space and is exploring possibilities to showcase visual artists, local filmmakers and dance.

“Greater Cincinnati has such a diverse community of artists, and we’re in a position to celebrate and serve them all,” Lee said. “We want to be the place people think of when they think about a vibrant arts community.”

Lee hired Cathy Creason as artistic director for the venue, and she quickly assembled a creative advisory board to help focus the direction of the creative and performing arts at Thompson House.

“We have some extremely talented and passionate people on our board,” Creason said. “And we’ll soon have Broadway veteran and Tony nominee Pamela Myers joining us (see release dated Sept. 17). We have a bright future.”

In addition to Myers, the board includes Danny Davies, a longtime Greater Cincinnati theater educator and performer. He may be best known for his several turns in the riotous two-man “Tuna” plays performed in multiple venues around town.

Douglas Haman is a local attorney and veteran technical theater artist. He has been mentor to the lights and sound crew at St. Xavier High School’s award-winning Theatre Xavier for more than two decades.

Jessica Hendy is a CCM graduate who recently won raves for her work in Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati’s production of Next to Normal. She has appeared on Broadway in Cats, Aida and Amour and regularly tours the country in concert and with her cabaret act.

Mark D. Motz, a former journalist turned PR specialist, is owner of 1500 Media. He is an award-winning writer, photographer and filmmaker and served on the original board of the Greater Cincinnati Cappies, the organization which celebrates high school theater in the region.

Doug Schmutte is the music director at St. John the Baptist Parish in Dry Ridge. He has played and conducted in the pit of countless theatrical productions both locally and around the country, including performances with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

“We’re ahead of where we planned to be at this point, both in terms of revenue and in terms of people coming through the door,” Lee said. “It’s an exciting time for us.”

Thompson House Adds Broadway Vet to Board

THOMPSON HOUSE ADDS BROADWAY VET PAMELA MYERS TO BOARD

Pamela Myers.

NEWPORT (KY.) – Thompson House Newport – Greater Cincinnati’s live music and creative hub – will add Broadway veteran and Tony nominee Pamela Myers to its creative advisory board.

Myers – Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s first-ever musical theatre graduate and Tony nominee for her performance as Marta in the original landmark production of the Stephen Sondheim musical Company – begins her board tenure with the Oct. 23 meeting.

“I am so looking forward to working with the Thompson House board and am very happy to bring my experience to help create a new home for the fine arts in the Cincinnati area,” Myers said. “They have a beautiful, historic facility and some great ideas for development already in place.

“My career has had so many different facets – theatre, TV, cabaret, concerts, teaching – that any help I can offer will be fun. The board is very enthusiastic and is looking forward to bringing an additional performing space to the artists and the fans in the area.”

“This is a huge step for us, to have someone of Pamela Myers’ caliber willing to advise us on the direction of Thompson House,” said operations partner Kirt Lee. “She brings another level of legitimacy to what we’re trying to do here, which is to create a home for artists and audiences of every kind. We’re thrilled to have her on board.”

“This is definitely exciting for us,” said Cathy Creason, Thompson House’s artistic director. “We assembled a gifted and passionate creative advisory board when we began, but landing Pamela Myers, well, she’s an amazing talent and will be a valuable asset, not just for me and for the board, but for the entire Greater Cincinnati arts community as we build this venue into a one-stop destination for a wide variety of fans of the arts.”

In addition to Company, Myers worked with Charles Schulz in the creation of Peppermint Patty in Snoopy. She also appeared on Broadway in The Selling of the President, the Company reunion concert and the 2002 revival of Into the Woods. Locally, she made memorable turns as Mrs. Lovett in both the Playhouse in the Park and CCM productions of Sweeney Todd and as Mama Rose in Gypsy.

Over the years Myers has performed as Dot in the Los Angeles premiere of Sunday in the Park with George and as Annie in Annie Get Your Gun, where she had the privilege of meeting Annie Oakley’s only living relative, a grand-niece. Her many concert performances include work with the Cincinnati and Boston Pops Orchestras, as well as appearances in “Salute to Sondheim” at the Shubert Theatre in New York and “What A Swell Party! The Cole Porter Salon” at the Alcazar Theatre in San Francisco. One of her favorite “jobs” was performing at the White House with Marvin Hamlisch and Jerry Herman.

Myers joins a Thompson House Creative Advisory Board that also includes Lee, Creason, educator and actor Danny Davies, Broadway performer Jessica Hendy, music director Doug Schmutte, attorney Douglas Haman and PR specialist Mark Motz.

Thompson House Announces Auditions for New Musical VARIABLES

THOMPSON HOUSE ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR WORLD PREMIERE OF LOCAL NEW MUSICAL

NEWPORT (KY.) – Thompson House Newport – Cincinnati’s live music and creative hub – is proud to present the new musical VARIABLES Feb. 21, 23, 28 and March 2, 2013.

Open auditions for the world premiere production take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, and from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in the Heaven Lounge at Thompson House, 24 E. 3rd Street Newport. Write markdmotz@gmail.com to schedule an audition time.

A brief show summary, character breakdown and vocal ranges for the characters are attached with this release. Prospective cast members should prepare 16 bars of a contemporary musical theater song (bring your sheet music; a pianist will be provided for the music auditions; no prerecorded accompaniment or a capella auditions), a 30-second monologue and a joke (no knock-knocks). Be prepared to do group and individual improvisations, as well as readings from the script.

VARIABLES is the rock musical story of five friends out for a night on the town, whose evening is interrupted by some disturbing news. Local composer Jered S. Ryan conceived the comic story with deeper undertones and wrote the score; Mark D. Motz wrote the book and lyrics. VARIABLES is their first collaboration.

VARIABLES is also the first time Thompson House ventures into producing an original theatrical work.

“This is a great fit for us,” said Cathy Creason, artistic director. “We’re committed to the local arts community and have a lot of different venues – all under one roof – available to make Thompson House a place where the public and artists alike can find a home.”

“We’re very excited to work with Thompson House to get this show on its feet,” Ryan said. “They’ve been extremely generous and supportive.”

“Having the opportunity to take something out of your head and put it on an actual stage is what everybody who writes a show dreams,” Motz said. “This opportunity is priceless.”

“This is the direction Thompson House wants to take,” said Kirt D. Lee, Thompson House operations partner. “We want to be known as a leader in the Greater Cincinnati arts community and fostering fresh talent is a big part of that. We want this production to be the first in an ongoing series of new shows we can help develop and launch.

“Whether it’s theater, music, visual art, film or poetry, we want people to have an opportunity to express themselves in a variety of ways.”

VARIABLES (A New Musical)
Music by Jered S. Ryan, Book and Lyrics by Mark D. Motz

OVERVIEW
VARIABLES is the story of five good friends out for a night drinking, talking, hanging out, being guys. Nothing earth shattering, but something both entertaining and revealing, a window into one night out with the boys.

The story is pretty simple. STEVE is out for a night with his friends MICHAEL, NEIL, BRENT and ULYSSES. He wants to tell them about his dad, who is sick and probably dying. All the guys place Steve’s dad on a pedestal, but Steve and his dad have some unresolved issues. While Steve usually is the one the guys go to for advice or help, tonight he needs them. However, as is often the case, the boys just want to be boys when they’re together and don’t give Steve much of a chance to talk.

The other main character is NATALIE, the bartender, who has a very good ear and sharp tongue, both necessities in her profession.

The book of the show advances in quick – occasionally caustic – banter. The score is rock and pop, featuring a number of opportunities for solo and group singing.

The title VARIABLES alludes to all the different things that can go on in a seemingly normal night out with the guys. While it’s mostly a good time, a lot is bubbling beneath the surface with each of the main characters. How they approach their issues tonight would almost certainly be different the next night, two months from now or a year later. Not all the questions will be answered, though there is resolution for some of the guys. We want you to be entertained, but to think a little, too, wonder what happens the next day with these guys. What will their next meeting as a group be like? What’s the next chapter?

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION, VOCAL RANGES
All the principle guys are life-long friends, ages late 20s to early 40s. Ideally the five principal men will look roughly the same age. Seeking actors with strong improvisational skills and singing voices. Some stylized movement required, but no traditional choreography.

STEVE – The dependable one, the glue for the group. He’s the one who brings them together, who the other guys go to for advice when they have serious issues. His central conflict is with his father, a guy all the others love and admire, though they don’t know he was less than perfect behind closed doors with Steve and his mother. Steve spends much of the night trying to tell the guys his father is ill and likely dying. He wrestles with the idea he and his dad are too much alike for his taste. Rock tenor – A-flat

MICHAEL – The player. Good looking. He has money and doesn’t mind spending it on cars and clothes and women, with whom he has been legendarily successful. That said, he has no interest in or ability to keep any kind of real relationships, to a certain extent even with these best friends. Pure narcissist. Rock tenor – High A

NEIL – Sickeningly happy about being married, but otherwise mostly without ambition. He’s a dreamer without the wherewithal to follow through on any of his grand plans, despite being bright and capable. He knows he’s half a fraud and is afraid others know it, too. But at the end of the day he can give up on the finer things he dreams about in favor of love. Baritone – E

BRENT – Never left the frat house. The first to buy a round, but also to pass out or get arrested. Has addictive problems. He makes the easy choice, follows the path of least resistance. Has had a series of jobs, but never a career. He’s ultimately lonely and looking for something to fill the void. Baritone – F

ULYSSES – Unhappily married, working on questions of fidelity, fatherhood, boredom. Looks up to/envies Michael. Looks at Neil and sees nothing familiar to his life. Very much a follower and goes whichever way the wind blows. Rock tenor – High B

NATALIE – The bartender. Not quite omniscient, but a very quick study of group and individual behavior. Can hold her own – and then some – in bantering with the guys. Relates with Michael and helps him sort through his issues. A keen observer and commentator. Mezzo soprano – E

COMPANY – A few men and women in and around the bar; the women have a few lines and all will serve as periodic backup singers. All vocal ranges.
