THE WEDDING SINGER takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. It’s 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party, until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

Performance dates are Oct. 23-Nov. 2. For more information click here.

1928 is the last year of each of the Fail Sisters’ lives. Nelly was the first of the Fail girls to die, followed soon after by her sisters Jenny June and Gerty. As with so many things in life—blunt objects, disappearances and consumption—they never saw death coming. Written by Chicago playwright Philip Dawkins, Failure: A Love Story is a magical, musical fable that traces the sisters’ triumphs and defeats, lived out in the rickety two-story building by the Chicago River that was the Fail family home and clock shop. This funny, moving and profoundly wise play reminds us that in the end, all that remains is love.

NKU Gets Totally Eighties With THE WEDDING SINGER

NKU_The Wedding SingerHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University continues its 2014-15 Theatre and Dance season with THE WEDDING SINGER, running October 23 – November 2.

THE WEDDING SINGER
Music by Matthew Sklar
Book by Chad Bequelin and Tim Herlihy
Lyrics by Chad Bequelin
Based on the New Line Cinema film written by Tim Herlihy

October 23 – November 2, 2014
NKU Corbett Theatre

Based on the hit Adam Sandler film, THE WEDDING SINGER takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.

Director Michael Hatton (Grease, The Rocky Horror Show) is no stranger to flashy crowd-pleasers, but Hatton says THE WEDDING SINGER is more than a campy romp through the 1980s: “… the musical speaks to the heart and touches upon what all humans seek: connection with another person. Underneath all of the neon colors, rock music, and 1980s camp, we get to see two people find each other despite all odds… sometimes the thing we keep searching for is right in front of our eyes.”

Sunday at 3pm
Monday & Tuesday are dark

THE BACCHAE presented by Northern Kentucky University through Oct. 5. Click here for more information on the production.

Northern Kentucky University starts their new season with solid production of the Greek tragedy, THE BACCHAE.

Hunter Henrickson as Pentheus & Matt Krieg as Dionysus.

The ensemble as a whole handled the material well. I thought there were some nice moments from Matt Krieg as Dionysus and Sarah Alice Shull as Agave. Kyle Taylor was convincing as the blind prophet. I would have liked to see Taylor and Connor Moulton as Cadmus move a bit more like the age of their characters.

I wouldn’t have minded a little more vocal variety in the performers’ tone and cadence. There were times when the gestures, of some actors, seemed a bit elementary.

The Bacchae.

The Bacchae (with Gabby Francis as Coryphaeus, the Chorus Leader) worked extremely well as an ensemble with the vocals and dance. At times I did have to hunt for the individual speakers. The Bacchae who began their lines with some kind of movement were easier to spot. The choreography by Kyle Segar was interesting and varied, creating some really nice stage pictures.

The costume design by Ronnie Chamberlain worked well for the production. I liked the coloring of The Bacchae’s costumes. Also, the cut and fabric moved very well for the choreography. It was nice how the special lighting effects (designed by Terry D. Powell) played across their costumes. Dionysus’ golden armor was also nicely done.

Congratulations on a solid production across the board.

I would enjoy hearing what you think about the show or my review. All I ask is that you express your opinion without attacking someone else’s opinion. You can post your comments below.
