Directed by Elizabeth Harris

Cast: Carter Bratton, Matthew Krieg, Leah Strasser & Rebecca Whatley.

How far would you go for love?  Or for art?  What concessions would you make?  What price would you be willing to pay?  Such are the painful questions explored by Neil LaBute in The Shape of Things, a modern day retelling of the fall of man.  After a chance meeting in a museum, Evelyn, a sexy, aggressive artist, and Adam, a shy, insecure student, become embroiled in an intense affair.  Before long, it veers into the kind of dangerous, seductive territory that LaBute does best, as Adam, under Evelyn’s steady influence, goes to unimaginable lengths to improve his appearance and character.  Only in the final and shocking exhibition, which challenges our most deeply entrenched ideas about art and love, does Evelyn reveal her true intentions.

FRANKIE AND JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DE LUNE presented by New Edgecliff Theatre through Oct. 3. Click here for more information on the production. I attended the opening Saturday performance.

I’ll give you three reasons why FRANKIE AND JOHNNY is such an excellent production: Jared Doren, Sara Mackie and Dylan Shelton.

Mackie and Shelton are excellent as the titular duo. Their characters are believable and instantly relate-able. The two have a great chemistry together and handle the emotional flow of the show naturally. It’s easy to become emotionally-invested in their story.

Dylan Shelton as Johnny.

For me, Frankie is Mackie’s best performance to date. The emotions and reactions that play across her face, and her body language, speaks volumes for the character. Frankie is likable and charmingly-awkward with an over-guarded heart.

Shelton is also very impressive. He has created this great persona for Johnny. A reformed bad boy with the heart of a poet, which he wears on his sleeve. There is this moment late in the show, where in his pleading with Frankie, and the emotion is just coming off him in waves.

Doren’s direction of Terrance McNally’s excellent script appears effortless. The blocking is natural and motivated. The emotional flow of the show is pitch perfect. The scene work is focused and balanced. The entire performance is completely genuine.

Frankie’s apartment looks great. Designed by Rachel Kuhl with Jared Earland serving as master carpenter (which included building, dis-assembling, moving and reassembling the set due to the venue change). Prop master Mary Gascho gave Frankie a believable world to live in. My only quibble about the set would be the width. It seemed a bit over-sized for a New York apartment that Frankie could afford as a waitress.

The radio show segments, courtesy of sound designer Jim Watson and performed by Joe Hornbaker, were very well done. Lighting designer Glen Goodwin handling of the “night” scenes worked really well. I also enjoyed the sunrise coming through the window.

Overall, a beautifully realized second-chance-at-love story.

My rating: 5 out of 5.

I would enjoy hearing what you think about the show or my review. All I ask is that you express your opinion without attacking someone else’s opinion. You can post your comments below.

Old Time Radio Sensation Comes Through Loud and Clear with ArtsConnect Dinner Show

— Relive or experience for the first time, the magic of old time radio with live sound effects and a stellar cast —

— It’s a trip to the past with a modern twist…and dinner! —

AC_Strangers on a Train logoSpringfield Township – On Friday, October 16 at 6:30 pm, the New Edgecliff Theatre will present a special old-time radio style performance of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller STANGERS ON A TRAIN. Guy Haines and Charles Bruno meet by chance on a train and share about the people in their lives they could do without. Guy is going through an unhappy time in his marriage and wants to divorce his wife Miriam. Bruno’s problem is with his father, but he wants a more permanent solution. The plan is relatively simple. When Bruno has an idea about planning the perfect murders, and then goes on to commit one, Haines finds himself in a bad position.

This vintage radio-style performance, complete with live sound effects created by Media Heritage’s Mike Martini, tells one of America’s best psychological crime thrillers. The performers will be dressed in period fashion. This production is a unique combination of the nostalgia of classic radio drama, and the excitement of a live theatrical performance. Come see the golden age of radio brought gloriously back to life, featuring some of Greater Cincinnati’s finest actors! It’s a trip to the past with a modern twist.’

Due to technical delays in our new home, New Edgecliff Theatre will be moving our production of FRANKIE & JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DE LUNE to a new venue. Our friends at Cincinnati Actors Studio & Academy (CASA) will be hosting our production in their black box studio theatre at the Essex Studios (2511 Essex Place, Cincinnati, OH 45206).

The venue change requires time, and therefore we are delaying the opening of our production by one week. Our new production dates are:

  • September  24, 25, 26, and 27
  • September 30, October 1, 2, and 3

Curtain time Wednesday-Saturday at 8pm. Sunday the 27th matinee at 2pm.

For those with existing reservations, you will be contacted about the date an venue changes directly and have an opportunity to reschedule your reservation or exchange your tickets.

For those who have not yet reserved their tickets, please do! The actors, director, and production crew have crafted an incredible show. This change in venue will remove the technical obstacles they were working to overcome and will give our audiences the experience they deserve!

If you have questions or concerns about the venue change, please contact Devon Campailla at 513.207.1239.
