Presented by Know Theatre of Cincinnati
July 26-Aug. 24
Over-the-Rhine

Directed by Eric Vosmeier

Cast: Breona Conrad, Joshua Murphy & Chris Wesselman

Two ambitious young men and one badass lady fight the recession with dictatorial dreams and sketchy plans. Adam, Matt, and Beth are Bay Area 30-somethings with too much college education (and not enough employment) for their own good. Adam has a plethora of ideas, but none seem viable and all of them involve robots. But when three fortune cookies, delivered with their takeout, change the course of their lives, the trio settles for taking over a small island nation off the coast of Chile populated by… miniature vicuña? Seriously. Alliances form, friendships are tested, and murders are attempted. Did we mention this is a comedy? Production contains adult language and adult situations.

Know Theatre of Cincinnati Presents TOIL AND TROUBLE

TOIL AND TROUBLE is a “laugh-out-loud weird” contemporary take on Macbeth

KTC_Toil and TroubleComing in July, Know Theatre of Cincinnati will stir the cauldron of classic theatre with a modern take on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. TOIL AND TROUBLE by Lauren Gunderson will open July 26, 2013 and run through August 24, 2013. This regional premiere is the second production following the play’s world premiere at Impact Theatre in Berkeley, California. The cast is comprised of Breona Conrad, Joshua Murphy, and Chris Wesselman and is directed by Know Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director Eric Vosmeier with lighting and scenic design by Andrew Hungerford, sound Design by Doug Borntrager, and costume design by Noelle Wedig.

Seriously. Alliances form, friendships are tested, and murders are attempted. Did we mention this is a comedy?

TOIL AND TROUBLE throws baseball, angel investors, hipsters, Wikipedia, fortune cookies, hypothetical sex, and violence into one cauldron, creating a potion that’s sure to have you laughing, and maybe considering your own coup d’état. This twist on Shakespeare’s Macbeth shows that hubris, greed, power, and passion still rule the world. Something wicked funny this way comes.

“I’m excited to have another victory for our new schedule model by securing the rights for the first production of this show following its world premiere,” says Eric Vosmeier, Producing Artistic Director. “We’ve been looking for a strong comedy and I think this fits the bill perfectly! This contemporary retelling of Macbeth is spot on, but with enough twists and turns to keep the audience guessing. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. And I’m thrilled to have one more chance to work with Josh and Breona before they leave Cincinnati.”

TOIL AND TROUBLE had its world premiere at Impact Theatre in Berkeley, California in November of 2012.

All tickets are now $15 in advance and $20 on the week of the show, beginning Mondays at noon. Purchase a flex-pass to Know Theatre of Cincinnati for $90 and enjoy tickets for this production and many others at your leisure guaranteed at the advance price! All tickets, flex-passes, and gift certificates can be purchased at knowtheatre.com or by calling 513.300.5669(KNOW).

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized The Know Theatre’s COCK with 3 LCT nominations, as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production: Direction (Brian Robertson), Ensemble Acting, and scenic design (Andrew Hungerford).

In this tense comedy about sexual identity, COCK explores one man’s choices about which path of love to pursue. When John takes a break from his longtime boyfriend, the last thing he expects is to fall in love with a woman. Trapped between two lovers, John feels the physical and emotional tug of both, and neither party wants to lose the battle for his heart. John has a choice to make as he navigates his sexuality, selfhood, and the intersection of the two.

Panelists praised Brian Robertson for his “brilliant” direction—“He has no props, no set furnishings to work with…he keeps the characters in constant, purposeful motion.” The ensemble “worked incredibly well together, which was make-or-break for this production”; “a superb cast”. Of Andrew Hungerford’s set design, panelists reported: “The positioning of the uncomfortable platform seating set on each side with the stage in the center with no set pieces was an incredible, well-thought out design… The audience was forced to look at each other with the actors in the foreground throughout the play,” Overall, panelists described the production as “an intimate, emotional play in a unique setting”—“ audiences will find it entertaining and fascinating”.

COCK continues through March 11th. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.knowtheatre.com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. KTC Presents COCK – Cast Announced

KTC_Cock2Know Theatre is thrilled to announce the regional premiere of COCK by Mike Bartlett as our next mainstage production. This will be only the second American production following its premiere at the Royal Court Theatre, London. COCK opens April 12, 2013 and runs through May 11, 2013. Brian Robertson, who currently teaches in the Theatre and Dance Department at Northern Kentucky University, will direct this production. Some of his past directing credits include Camelot at the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center and A Flowering Tree at Cincinnati Opera. COCK features performances from Darnell Pierre Benjamin, Kevin Thornton, Danielle Knox, and George Alexander.

Without scenery or props, COCK allows the audience to focus on the relationships between the characters and opens a dialogue about what we’re physically attracted to and why. This feisty and energizing piece is an exercise in emotional carnage with quick-paced dialogue that suggests to-the-death battle of the characters. Each character, with the exception of John, knows what he or she wants and is willing to fight to get it.

“I had the chance to check out this production while visiting New York for the American Theatre Wing award ceremony, and I loved it,” says Eric Vosmeier, Producing Artistic Director. “It’s a kind of pansexual love story that’s told very simply without all of the trappings of a traditional production. A very simple set, no props, minimal lighting and sound all conspire to allow the actors and Mr. Bartlett’s text to truly take center stage and to shine.”

“This is one of the first victories of Know Theatre’s new scheduling model. Rights for this production have only just become available and because we’ve created a schedule that can bend and flex, we’ve been able to schedule a production almost immediately. We’re thrilled to be one of (if not the) first post-New York production of this work.”

COCK made its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre, London in November 2009. In May 2012, COCK made its US premiere at The Duke, New York.

All tickets are $15 in advance and $18 on the week of the show, beginning Mondays at noon. Tickets can be purchased by visiting knowtheatre.com or calling 513.300.5669. Flex-passes are valid for this event. This production features bleacher style seating.

If you are unable to print the title of the play, we suggest “Cockfight Play.”
