Know Shines a Light into the World in THE LIGHT AT THE END OF A WORLD

Know Theatre of Cincinnati shines a light into the world inKTC_The Light at the End logoDevised by Know Theatre
January 21-24, 2021

Feb. 1 – We had planned for The Light at the End of a World, our choose-your-own-adventure production about lighthouses, the perils of the coast, and what to look for when you’re lost in the dark, to run for one weekend only.

But our little streaming experiment was such a hit with audiences, and we received so many requests for an extension, that we’ve made it a video-on-demand experience through February 21.

After you purchase your pay-what-you-can ticket, you’ll have 48 hours to access the show and explore your way through the paths.

On what to look for when you’re lost in the dark.

Choose Your Story

Is it just us, or has this winter seemed darker than usual? A lot of this past year has been pretty dark, to be honest. Given the state of the world, Know Theatre found ourselves yearning for a light in the darkness. Kindling that light gave us our newest digital MainStage event: The Light at the End of a World, which offers a little guidance about what to look for when you’re lost in the dark.

In this all-online, interactive, choose-your-own-path performance, audiences find themselves welcomed into the private thoughts of a passionate amateur historian of lighthouses and other historical wayfinding. As his story unfolds, viewers can choose “doors” in the performance that drop them into other worlds: a cabaret featuring the best in nautical stand-up comedy, a grippingly suspenseful tale about travelers marooned in a lighthouse, and the workshop of a beleaguered young artist struggling to find her light.

The Light at the End of a World has been devised by the artists on staff at the Know Theatre. We have always known that art can be a healing balm to the spirits of artist and audience alike, and as we wrestled with this question over the past several months – what do we do when we are lost in the dark? – the different limbs of this play began to emerge.

Inspired by branching, site-specific works of theatre, like Sleep No More from Punchdrunk and The Other Rhine, our own co-produced work with Hit The Lights! Theatre Co. in 2016, this show is a fully-staged piece of digital entertainment that viewers can stream in the safety and comfort of their own homes. It’s a warm and dry haven for all who feel battered on the rocks of the past year, for everyone who’s looking for a little light or a little sweetness in the January dark, or for anyone who’s longing to be a light for others.

The Light at the End of a World will be performed for just one weekend, January 21 through 24. Helmed by the Know’s artistic leadership team, Andrew J. Hungerford and Tamara Winters, the show is co-created by Zach Robinson, Liz Carman, Kayla Williams, and Alexx Rouse.

Know Theatre takes the potential risks of making theatre in a pandemic very seriously, and we are taking all possible steps to ensure the safety of our cast and crew. Precautions include grouping working teams together inside pre-existing social “bubbles,” regular COVID testing for all members of the production team, clearly delineated working spaces to ensure safe distancing, mask-wearing at all times except during performance, and regular disinfecting of the theatre.

Tickets for The Light at the End of a World will be available in early January. We can’t wait to take you on this wayfinding journey with us. The seas may get bumpy, but we’ll guide you safely by these rocky shores.

KRAMPUS CLAUS is Coming to Town

KTC_Krampus Claus logoYou’ve been good, right? You probably have nothing to worry about.

Just in time for Christmas, Radio Know brings you a brand-new audio drama about famous figures from holiday folklore. Written by Cincinnati-area playwright and Fringe Festival artist Sean P. Mette, Krampus Claus is a full-length, full-cast radio play that brings a fresh take on Yuletide stories from Germanic, Celtic, Icelandic, and Slavic traditions. It will be available from the evening of December 14.

Many years ago, Krampus, the legendary Christmas demon, faced down and defeated the greatest evil he’s ever known: St. Nicholas, who had begun gorging himself on naughty children. Krampus and his wife, the probably-mostly-reformed Christmas witch Frau Perchta, were left to handle the delivery of toys to Christmas-celebrating children the world over. But now, an ill wind is blowing, the chains that bind Nicholas are weakening, and a final reckoning must come between Krampus and the forces of darkness.

Krampus Claus is the perfect show for audiences who want to celebrate Christmas with a story they haven’t heard a million times before. It’s an epic holiday action-adventure tale about love, loyalty, and the fearless pursuit of redemption. Patrons can purchase it for download from our website, http://www.knowtheatre.com/radioknow, for five dollars. Radio Know productions are perfect listening for your commute, your workout, or whenever you usually listen to podcasts.

Radio Know is the audio play brand of the Know Theatre of Cincinnati, created as part of the Know’s response to the shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Every month, we produce a brand-new radio play highlighting tons of local talent. Each radio play can be purchased for individual download, or patrons can join the Radio Know Listeners’ Club, our subscription service that brings each new Radio Know production to members’ email inboxes before it’s available for general purchase.

Playwright Sean P. Mette’s other recent works include the immersive walkthrough ghost story, Silent Scream, produced this past Halloween by the Carnegie as a socially-distanced theatre experience, as well as many popular Cincinnati Fringe Festival shows like Billy and Furlesque. Krampus Claus features the voices of James Creque as Krampus, Kate Mock Elliott as Frau Perchta, Abe Goldfarb as St. Nicholas, Adam Tran as the Slavic dark god Chernobag, Jared Earland as the sullen elf Ulbrecht, and Kate Stark, Kearston Hawkins-Johnson, and Zoe Rose Davidson as the magically-inclined daughters of Krampus.

The Know Theatre Continues Its 23rd Mainstage Season

ktc_logoWe’re Rebuilding It.

The Know Theatre of Cincinnati is very pleased to announce continuing plans for its 2020-2021 theatrical season. The Know remains committed to its mission as “Cincinnati’s theatrical playground” to present bold and creative new works from unexpected and surprising voices, while maintaining the highest possible level of safety for artists and audiences alike.

Mainstage Season
The Know Theatre’s twenty-third season, themed as “We Can Rebuild It,” continues with our next Mainstage production, Zack, by Christian St. Croix and directed by Andrew J. Hungerford. Livestreaming from the Know November 20 through December 13, this nostalgically satirical new play tackles the tropes of early 90’s teen sitcoms through the eyes of its tokenized minority characters, and asks the question: whom does the bell save? Starring David Armando and A.J. Baldwin, Zack is as packed full of hilarious and tender moments as the shows by which it’s inspired, while bringing an unflinching honesty all its own.

In February, the Know will present Theatre: A Love Story, by Caridad Svitch. This boldly poetic script, which peels back layers of storytelling convention and artifice to expose the raw beating heart of performance, will receive a collaborative production that blurs the lines between theatre and film and which draws on the strength of Cincinnati’s artistic community with multiple directors, a local cast, and collaboration with the dance company Pones, Inc. Theatre: A Love Story will stream online February 26 through March 27.

The mainstage season will be rounded out by two other shows, opening in January and in April; these titles will be announced later in the season.

Previously, the Know’s mainstage season debuted in August with a digital performance of Feast., by Megan Gogerty and directed by Tamara Winters. Featuring local star Jennifer Joplin, this solo retelling of the story of Grendel’s Mother from the epic poem Beowulf received rave reviews from critics and patrons alike and was viewed by audiences across the country. Ticket-buyers had the option to purchase a special “party favor” that was shipped to them in the mail, which added a bit of live, interactive flavor to the digital performance.

The season continued in September with a two-week run of Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!, adapted by Cheryl L. West from her play Fannie. Created in association with Chicago’s Goodman Theatre to engage and activate voters in anticipation of November’s election, Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It! was a traveling outdoor production, performed by two actors from the back of a pickup truck, that captured the spirit of the civil rights rallies led by the activist Fannie Lou Hamer in the 1960s and 1970s. This show, along with voter registration drives courtesy of the Greater Cincinnati Voter Collaborative, visited fourteen different parking lots across the greater Cincinnati area, from Covington to Hamilton.

Radio Know
When the Know closed its doors back in April, due to the first outbreak of COVID-19, we began production on a series of new radio plays. It was an exciting opportunity to create safely-distanced work for local actors, directors, and playwrights, while providing our patrons and subscribers with new entertainment. The Radio Know library now encompasses seven full-length audio plays, spanning a wide variety of styles and genres, from comedy to family drama to gothic drama even to jazz-infused, with a new play debuting monthly. Next up will be Haunted: The Great Lakes Ghost Project, by Joseph Zettelmaier, just in time for Halloween. Following that will be The Election of Miss Rebecca’s Third-Grade Class, by Brandon Leatherland, in November.

Stream Team
When production was put on an indefinite hiatus in the spring, the Know dove into its vaults to share archived recordings of some recent favorite shows. Currently available for video-on-demand streaming is Darkest Night at the Gnarly Stump, by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, with music by Paul Strickland. More recordings will be released throughout the coming season.

The Cincinnati Fringe Festival
The 2020 Cincinnati Fringe Festival pivoted to an all-digital production, with the whole Fringe experience, from Primary Lineup to Bar Series, fully online. It’s too early now to say what the 2021 Cincy Fringe will look like, but we know this: it’s happening, and it’ll be Kinda Weird, Like You. Applications are now open on cincyfringe.com.

It’s no secret: 2020 has been hard on all of us, but the Know Theatre didn’t quit when the going got tough. We’re pursuing our mission to be Cincinnati’s theatrical playground, and we’re working hard to reinvent and rebuild our industry and find new ways to delight and inspire our audiences. We’re so proud of what we’ve done so far, and so pleased that audiences have had such a great time along with us. So if you’re missing live events, if you’re curious about the art we’re making, or if you want to support a local Cincinnati business, we’re waiting for you. Come on in. The water’s great.
