April 5-22
The Loft Theatre [Dayton]

Directed by Marya Spring Cordes

Cast: Richard Buchanan as Stanley, Eric Deiboldt as Eugene, Lisa Ann Goldsmith as Kate, Julie Murphy as Laurie, Sonia Perez as Blanche, Rory Sheridan as Jack & Katie Sinicki as Nora

He has holes in his shoes and liver on the dinner table, but all teenage Eugene Jerome can think of is girls, baseball and writing—in that order. There’s hardly a moment’s peace in a house filled with his domineering mother, over-worked father, and worldly older brother, not to mention his widowed aunt and her two maturing daughters. Simon’s semi-autobiographical comedy about growing up in a crowded, lower middle class home in 1937 Brooklyn is a touching coming-of-age classic that proves no matter how crazy life gets, family can make it crazier.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s ERMA BOMBECK: AT WIT’S END Truly Proves “Humorists Can Never Start to Take Themselves Seriously”

Jennifer Joplin stars as Daytonian favorite in The Human Race’s one-woman show, April 19 – May 13, 2018 at The Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center

(Dayton, OH) — This spring, The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) honors one of the Gem City’s best loved icons when it presents Allison Engel and Margaret Engel’s Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End in the 54-seat performance space at its Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center. Dayton’s own Erma Bombeck takes center stage in this touching one-woman comedy titled after her long-running newspaper column. Human Race Resident Artist Jennifer Joplin stars as the literary legend whose candid commentary on life as a woman, spouse and mother made her the champion of suburban housewives everywhere and her newspaper columns a mainstay on kitchen refrigerators for over thirty years. Full of personal anecdotes and sprinkled with plenty of Bombeck’s famous one-liners, it’s a charming biography that proves “if you can’t make it better, you can laugh at it.” The Human Race’s Heather N. Powell (Steel MagnoliasChange and A Dickens of Time) directs. The preview performances of Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End are Thursday, April 19 through Sunday, April 22 and Thursday, April 26. Opening night is Friday, April 27. The play runs approximately 60 minutes with no intermission.

Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End was written by twin sisters Allison and Margaret Engel, who found success with their previous one-woman play, Red Hot Patriot, about another brassy newspaper columnist and best-selling author, Molly Ivins. Since its 2015 premiere as part of the Women’s Theatre Festival in Washington, DC, Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End has become one of the hottest productions in the nation, having already been produced by dozens of theatre companies.

“I’m thrilled this funny and poignant play is coming to Dayton, Erma’s hometown,” said Teri Rizvi, founder and director of the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop at the University of Dayton. “Her wit and wisdom have stood the test of time — and remind us that the foibles of family life will always make us laugh.”

Actress Jennifer Joplin is honored to share not just the humor but the courage and heart of this Dayton hero. “I grew up with clippings of Erma’s column on the refrigerator. She was funny, goofy – but she also made what seemed crazy in our house, normal,” says Joplin. “Working on this show, I’ve come to realize how really revolutionary she was. What she did in her writing and her activism, was remarkable and still inspiring. She’s a true hero of mine!”

Local audiences may remember Ms. Joplin from the World Premier of 26 Pebbles, as Chelsea in On Golden Pond, Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, Brooke in Other Desert Cities, Annette in God of Carnage, also Proof, Angels in America, Band Geeks!, Doubt, Crimes of the Heart or any of the other productions she’s been fortunate enough to be a part of at The Human Race Theatre for over 25 years! Some of her other favorite roles include Aimee in The Humans, Rosemary in Outside Mullingar and Gwen in Rapture, Blister, Burn at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati as well as Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. A long-standing Human Race Resident Artist and proud graduate of Wright State University’s professional actor training program, she’s worked nationally as an actor, corporate trainer, voiceover artist and teacher, recently adding two film credits to her resume – Old Man and the Gun and Donnybrook. Founder and lead coaching artist for Spotlight Training, and president of the League of Cincinnati Theatres, she is the wearer of many hats and coined the phrase “responsi-juggling.”

Biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End is sponsored by India and John Clarke and The Theda and Tamblin Clark-Smith Family Foundation, Martha Moody Jacobs, and Doug and Sharon Scholz.

The Lines of Lust, Love and Trust in the Digital Age Blur in SEX WITH STRANGERS

HRTC_Sex with Strangers2

The Human Race continues its 31st Season with Laura Eason’s SEX WITH STRANGERS, February 1 – 18, 2018 at the Loft Theatre

“Who are you?” These are the first words spoken in Sex with Strangers, and pretty much summarize the play. In this digitally-dominated age, knowing a person’s true identity can be tricky. When I first saw this show in New York, I was intrigued by the cat-and-mouse, sexually charged relationship, and believed it would speak to our modern audience. Warning: it will get a bit steamy on stage, but what a way to warm up in the cold Miami Valley winter!” Kevin Moore, President & Artistic Director

(Dayton, OH) —This February, The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) is heating up the Loft Theatre with the hottest play in the country, Sex with Strangers. Failed novelist Olivia meets Ethan, a celebrated (and much younger) writer made famous by his sexcapade tell-all blog, at a snowbound bed and breakfast, and their mutual attraction quickly gets hot and heavy. As a weekend tryst develops into a long-term romance, their personal and professional lives collide. Ethan seeks legitimacy, dismissing his bad boy reputation as nothing more than an invented character. Olivia has her doubts, but craves the literary fame Ethan can offer her. Ambition, identity and trust are in play when online personals clash with real world expectations in this smart, steamy take on modern love.

WARNING: Sex with Strangers contains partial nudity, strong language and adult themes.

The roles of Olivia and Ethan are being portrayed by Jennifer Johansen and Ben Palacios.  They were last seen in The Human Race production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike – performed at the Victoria Theatre.  “Besides both being exceptional actors,” said Kevin Moore, “they already had experienced a degree of intimacy on stage, since their characters, the self-absorbed Masha and her hunky boy-toy Spike, were continually pawing at each other.”

Greg Hellems (HRTC’s The Glass Menagerie, Band Geeks!, and Best of Broadway), returns to The Race to direct Sex with Strangers.

Laura Eason (Playwright) is the author of 20 plays, original works and adaptations, a musical-book writer and screenwriter. Selected productions include Sex with Strangers (Second Stage, NYC; Signature Theatre, DC; Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago; Sydney Theatre, AU; published by Overlook Press), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Hartford Stage, CT; New Victory, NYC) and many more. As a screenwriter, Laura wrote on seasons two and three of the Emmy-winning Netflix show House of Cards.

The preview performance of Sex with Strangers is Thursday, February 1. Opening night is Friday, February 2.

CAST AND DESIGN TEAM

Our cast of two are veteran Human Race Theatre actors.

Jennifer Johansen (HRTC’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, A Christmas Carol and God of Carnage.) is “Olivia.” This will be Jennifer’s fourth show with The Human Race Theatre. Ben Palacios (HRTC’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, National tour of Fifty Shades of Grey parody, Spank!, starring as America’s favorite BDSM billionaire. TV credits include Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party and Tosh.0.) is “Ethan.” This is Ben’s second production at The Human Race Theatre.

Eric Moore (scenic designer), Head Carpenter, designs his fourth show at The Human Race. Costume designer Stormie Mac is delighted to be joining HRTC for the first time. Resident Artists John Rensel (lighting designer) and Jay Brunner (sound designer) round out the design team. Lexi Muller is the production stage manager.

Biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.
