ETC Reaches New Heights With Regional Premiere of THE MOUNTAINTOP, March 19-April 6

ENSEMBLE THEATRE CINCINNATI’S 2013-2014 REACHES NEW HEIGHTS WITH REGIONAL PREMIERE OF KATORI HALL’S THE MOUNTAINTOP, MARCH 19-APRIL 6, 2014

ETC_The Mountaintop(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati continues its 2013-2014 season with THE MOUNTAINTOP, by rising American talent Katori Hall, which depicts a powerful and provocative reimagining of a pivotal night in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life—his last. Written by a then-30-year-old Hall, The Mountaintop won Britain’s prestigious Laurence Olivier Award in 2010, a first for any black female playwright. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers, THE MOUNTAINTOP plays March 19 to April 6, 2014.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati is pleased to welcome back Gavin Lawrence as he takes on the iconic figure of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mr. Lawrence won over Cincinnati audiences and critics alike with his powerful portrayal of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in the sold-out run of Thurgood back in 2010. Joining him in this two-person regional premiere is Torie Wiggins, who wowed audiences in last season’s production of Black Pearl Sings!, as well as this past holiday as Princess Aouda in Around the World in 80 Days.

Memphis. The Lorraine Motel. April 4, 1968. A time and place burned into the American psyche. But what about April 3? How did Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., spend his last night on Earth? On the eve of his assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., returns after delivering the speech of a lifetime – when an unexpected visit from an enigmatic and feisty, young maid pushes him to confront his life and the plight and future of his people. A breakout hit in London and on Broadway, The Mountaintop’s humorous, magical storytelling fictionalizes the final hours of Dr. King’s life and unveils the humanity and vulnerability of America’s larger-than-life Civil Rights icon.

“This isn’t the ‘I Have a Dream’ King. This is a more radical King. This is King, the man; not the myth,” explains playwright Katori Hall. “I want people to see that this extraordinary man—who is actually quite ordinary—achieved something so great that he actually created a fundamental shift in how we, as a people, interact with each other.’”

ETC’s TRIBES Earns 4.5 Star LCT Rating

Dale Dymkoski as Billy & Kelly Mengelkoch as Sylvia

Dale Dymkoski as Billy & Kelly Mengelkoch as Sylvia

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Ensemble Theatre’s production of Tribes with a 4.5 Star Rating.

Tribes centers around Billy, the deaf son of a fiercely outspoken family obsessed with self-expression. He has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. However, when he finds a new family in the deaf community, tensions reach an all-time high in this touching play about membership in your tribe.

Panelists described Tribes as “an important play…another coup for the Ensemble theatre and I am sure people will flock to this excellent production.” Actors Dale Dymkoski, as Billy, and Kelly Mengelkoch, as Sylvia were praised in their leading roles: “They were able to convey such emotion with few or no words and I was just mesmerized in their comfort level… Mengelkoch is an actress at the top of her game, giving a wonderfully nuanced and delicate performance.” Panelists were impressed with Michael Evan Haney’s direction: “Great ensembles are not created by accident. No matter how talented the individual actors may be, it takes a skilled director to blend and mold an ensemble of this caliber. Michael Evan Haney once again proves that he is one of the best directors in Cincinnati.”

Panelists also singled out Brian Mehring for his scenic design and Fitz Patton for sound design. “Brian Mehring’s set and lighting turned a normal house into something spectacular… meticulous to detail and creative.” “The sound design was intriguing, especially in conveying the silence that Billy hears, or the buzzing of his hearing aids….exceptional, real and believable.”

Tribes continues through February 16th. Tickets can be purchased at www.ensemblecincinnati.org.

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. Familiar Myths Take on Magical New Forms in CCM’s METAMORPHOSES

FAMILIAR MYTHS TAKE ON MAGICAL NEW FORMS
IN CCM’S MAINSTAGE PRODUCTION OF ‘METAMORPHOSES’

This February, CCM presents the Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning ‘Metamorphoses,’ a series of vignettes adapted by theatre director and playwright Mary Zimmerman from the classic Ovid poem of the same name.
Guest artist D. Lynn Meyers directs.

CINCINNATI, OH—The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s (CCM) Mainstage Series resumes in February with a new production of Mary Zimmerman’s award-winning METAMORPHOSES. Based on the classic myths of Ovid, this entrancing drama runs Feb. 6 – 9 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater, with a special preview performance at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Guest artist D. Lynn Meyers directs. The production is intended for mature audiences.

From a simple, rippling pool of water, METAMORPHOSES conjures a series of familiar myths into gorgeous theatrical imagery. The winner of two Drama Desk Awards and one Tony Award after its Broadway run in 2002, this entrancing theatrical event retells the classic stories of King Midas, Orpheus and Eurydice, Narcissus and more.

To realize Zimmerman’s bold vision for METAMORPHOSES, an on-stage pool fills 576 square feet of Patricia Corbett Theater for this production. This pool holds 4,000 gallons of water, weighing roughly 10 tons, and ranges in depth from just a few inches to nearly two feet. Although the element of water is central to all of the myths featured in Metamorphoses, the pool’s function changes from vignette to vignette, sometimes serving as a simple washing basin or swimming pool, while other times standing in for the River Styx or the sea.

Insistent on finding the perfect actors for METAMORPHOSES, CCM Drama Chair Richard Hess held auditions in the aquatic complex of the University of Cincinnati’s Campus Recreation Center. The auditions were rigorous, taking place in the water to gauge the comfort levels of the actors.

Costume designer Amanda Kai Newman, a third-year masters degree student at CCM, faced multiple challenges in crafting costumes for this production, as well. Since the action in METAMORPHOSES takes place both in and out of the water, Newman used quick-drying fabrics such as silk and rayon. The fact that the on-stage pool is heated meant that all of her dyes had to be colorfast in both hot and cold water, too, so Newman ended up hand painting or dying all of the garments for this production.

Unique to CCM’s production, student cellist Jacob Yates adds to the atmosphere and magic of Metamorphoses, playing his original compositions during the performance.

The result of all of this hard work is a production tailor-made for the CCM stage, and an extraordinary theater-going experience that promises to brush with the divine.
