Dr. Dour & Peach Present LOVE AND OTHER LURES Virtually at Cincy Fringe

CFF20_Love and Other LuresA playfully macabre cabaret about love, danger, and things with teeth.

Washington, DC and Cincinnati, OH – Dr. Dour & Peach’s LOVE and OTHER LURES is available for on demand streaming this May 29 – June 13, as part of the all-online Cincinnati Fringe Festival. The duo sings songs about monsters, combining quirky and intricate songwriting with surprising emotional depth. This year they perform a house concert in their own house, where there’s a troll infestation, a tiny announcer who lives in the walls, and plenty of stage magic.

In the songs of LOVE and OTHER LURES, Dr. Dour (vocals, 10-string touch-guitar) and Peach (cello, banjo, cute) employ a range of musical styles from southern rock to Tin Pan Alley. The audience is transported on an oddball odyssey of ill-fated love stories. “Love is dangerous and unpredictable, like creatures with too many legs,” says Dr. Dour. “Love is a beautiful journey! Even if you fall down an interdimensional time tunnel at the end of it,” says Peach. The 2020 Cincinnati Fringe audiences get to decide for themselves.

Dr. Dour & Peach have received praise as “sinister and winsome at the same time” (Washington Post) with “whimsical, clever songwriting that can engage audience members of any age” (Washington City Paper). They’ve appeared at Cincinnati Fringe, Capital Fringe, Richmond Fringe, Shenandoah Fringe, New York Clown Theatre Festival, and ABSFest Americana Burlesque and Sideshow Festival. Their first album, The Monster Songs, is available on Bandcamp.com. Their musical comedy web series “Dr. Dour & Peach: The Webseries” is available for streaming on YouTube.com.

The co-creators and performers of LOVE and OTHER LURES are husband and wife team Toby Mulford and Rachel Spicknall Mulford. The music and lyrics are by Toby Mulford, and Rachel Spicknall Mulford directs. Performers Matthew Pauli, a veteran of Big Apple Circus, and James Humphries, who also designed the puppets, join the show for the first time. Costumes by Lynly Saunders. Editing by Kevin Boyce.

This production is presented as part of the 2020 Cincinnati Fringe Festival, produced by Know Theatre of Cincinnati.

CFF17: My Fringe Schedule: Day 5/Saturday Sell Outs

I’m finishing out the first week of Fringe with three more performances by three new participants.

CFF_The Pink Hulk_1x1First up is THE PINK HULK: One Woman’s Journey to Find the Superhero Within

What’s the first thing Valerie does when she’s diagnosed with cancer for a second time? She tries to get laid. Battling breast cancer after fighting off lymphoma, Valerie’s afraid she might lose “the girls” and takes them out for one last hurrah. Does she succeed? Come see it to find out! This sexy, adventurous solo show follows the triumphant journey of one woman seeking her own “hulk-like” strength to find her superhero within!

PINK HULK is written and performed by Valerie David out of New York City.

CFF_Lady Macbeth and Her Pal MeganNext, it’s Cornfed Productions from Iowa City, IA bringing LADY MACBETH AND HER PAL, MEGAN to Cincinnati.

When comedian Megan Gogerty is informed that she can’t play Lady Macbeth – because Lady Macbeth is a tragic figure of powerful darkness, and Megan is the human equivalent of a golden retriever – she sets out to prove them all wrong. Silly, theatrical, and complex, Megan attempts to answer the question, “What’s it like to be a woman comedian?” Spoiler: it’s murder.

I wrap up the day at the family-friendly THE MONSTER SONGS with Dr. Dour and Peach from Washington, D.C.

Dr. Dour pours forth tales both horrible and wondrous in a torrent of musical stylings. And Peach helps. Together they deliver never-before-told tales of lovesick mummies, giant lizards, bargain-hunting zombies, and other hapless creatures of the night in a cabaret cocktail of original songs. The mysterious is scrutinized. The strange is eternalized. And the dangerous is epitomized in song. Dr. Dour (vocals, 10-string touch-guitar) and Peach (cello, banjo, cute) elucidate all.

Announced at last night’s news, eight performances SOLD OUT on Saturday. They were:

Congratulations to all.

Happy Fringing!
