OTHELLO Runs March 2-24

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company
March 2-24
[Over-the-Rhine]

Directed by Christopher V. Edwards

Although a Moor and an outsider in Venice, Othello’s military prowess has earned him the respect of many—and the seething animosity of one. Othello’s long-time underling Iago is resentful of the Moor’s success, and when Othello elopes with a Venetian’s daughter, Iago sets in motion a devious plot to exact revenge. With an insinuation here, a whisper there, and the duplicitous deployment of a purloined handkerchief, he masterfully plays on the virtues and vulnerabilities of those around him, weaving with Machiavellian glee “the net that shall enmesh them all.”

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER Review

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER presented Cincinnati Shakespeare Company through Feb. 17. I attended the first of two preview performances.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company begins 2018 celebrating the silver anniversary of the silver screen classic, GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER.

Guest director D. Lynn Myers has gathered an excellent ensemble that creates an engaging, heartfelt, and emotionally-true production.

The young, engaged couple of Dr. John Prentice and Joanna Drayton are portrayed by Darnelle Pierre Benjamin and Caitlin McWerthy. Benjamin gives Prentice a quietly- grounded and deliberate personality, countered by McWerthy’s Joanna who is free-spirited, happy and eternally-optimistic. Together the two enjoy a united, easy chemistry as they are confronted with objections to their relationship.

Annie Fitzpatrick as Christina Drayton. By Mikki Schaffner Photography.

As Joanna’s mother Christina, Annie Fitzpatrick projects a brave face to hide the concerns she has for her daughter’s future. Father Matt (Barry Mulholland) struggles to balance his held beliefs with the realities his daughter would face in a mixed marriage.

The arrival of Dr. Prentice’s parents, Ken Early and Thursday Farrar, only heightens the tension. Farrar brings a quiet dignity to Mary who suffers seeing her husband and son so at odds. As John Sr., Early displays a barely-contained rage at what he sees as a betrayal to the sacrifices he made to give his son the best possibly life.

Rounding out the cast is Kelly Mengelkoch as Hillary St. George, the high-strung manager of Christina’s high-end art gallery; Burgess Byrd as Tillie, the Drayton’s long-time and much put-upon maid; and Jim Hopkins as Monsignor Ryan who is equally adept at dispensing wisdom as he is wise-cracks.

The scenic design by Shannon Moore provides four distinct play areas that speak well to the affluence of the Drayton family. Amanda McGee’s costume designs establish not only the period, but the economic divide of the two families.

Thursday Farrar as Mary Prentice, Ken Early as John Prentice, Sr., Caitlin McWethy as Joanna Drayton, and Darnell Pierre Benjamin as Dr. John Prentice. By Mikki Schaffner Photography.

After the performance, I half-joked to my guest that I really enjoyed the show, but why did they do it as a period piece. Sadly, the script holds up very well fifty years later. Many of the concerns both families have for the how the world will treat the young, interracial couple are still valid today. In fact, the events of the past few years have re-exposed an ugliness that still infects this country.

But the play also instills hope. Several beautifully-staged scenes elicit tears from the audience as the characters connect over shared experiences and loss. There isn’t a dry eye on stage or off as Matt Drayton delivers his requested decision about their relationship.

Well-staged, emotionally strong and beautifully acted, GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER holds a mirror up to the audience. Do you like what you see?

My rating: 4.75 out of 5.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER: The Silver Screen Classic Celebrating its 50th Anniversary this Year, Comes to the Stage in its Cincinnati Debut!

CSC presents the regional premiere of this new stage adaptation of the classic film directed by Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s D. Lynn Meyers

CINCINNATI, January 10, 2018 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company continues the Debut Season at The Otto M. Budig Theater with GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER, by Todd Kreidler, based on the screenplay by William Rose, playing January 26- February 17, 2018. This production marks the script’s Cincinnati premiere, and is directed by D. Lynn Meyers, the Artistic Director of Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. The cast includes CSC Associate Artists Darnell Pierre Benjamin and Kelly Mengelkoch alongside Barry Mulholland, Annie Fitzpatrick, Caitlin McWethy, Ken Early, and Thursday Farrar. The production is sponsored by Frost Brown Todd, BB&T, and Moerlein Lager House.

Self-proclaimed liberals Matt and Christina Drayton (Barry Mullholand and Annie Fitzpatrick) must wrestle with their own buried prejudices when their daughter Joanna (Caitlin McWethy) returns home with her new fiancé: African-American doctor John Prentiss (Darnell Pierre Benjamin). When the family is joined by John’s parents (Ken Early and Thursday Farrar), the young couple offers an ultimatum: the families must come to terms with their impending marriage that night – or John and Joanna will part forever.

This production follows closely on the 50th anniversary of the film GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER, which premiered December 12, 1967. The film featured Hollywood’s first interracial kiss and was groundbreaking in its portrayal of Joanna and John’s romance, and its incredible financial success cemented Sidney Poitier’s position as the top box-office draw of the year. The film also marked the final time that real-life power couple Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy appeared together onscreen, as Tracy passed away mere days after filming ended.  Sidney Poitier will also be turning 90 years old this year on Feb. 20, days after this production closes!

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company welcomes D. Lynn Meyers to the Director’s Chair again after working with CSC on Sense and Sensibility.  Ms. Meyers is in her 22nd season as the Producing Artistic Director of Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, where she has directed over 80 world and regional premieres, including The Legend of Georgia McBride, Hands on a Hardbody, Detroit ’67, I Am My Own Wife, Next to Normal, andCinderella: After Ever After. She has directed Off-Broadway at the York Theatre with Marsha Norman’s Traveler in the Dark and James McClure’s Max and Maxie. She has directed extensively throughout the US and Canada and began her career as the Associate Artistic Director at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Aside from directing, Ms. Meyers is also a member of the Casting Society of America, having cast for Hallmark, PBS, CBS, BBC, HBO, MTM, Paramount, and MGM. Her favorite feature credits include Carol, Miles Ahead, The Goat, and The Public, in addition to serving as the Location Casting Director for The Shawshank Redemption. She was named a finalist for the Zelda Fichandler National Award in 2011 and is a past recipient of the YWCA Career Woman of Achievement Award.

EVERY CHRISTMAS STORY EVER TOLD (AND THEN SOME!)
Cincinnati Shakespeare Company
Dec. 21-31
Over-the-Rhine

Directed by Jeremy Dubin

Cast: Justin McCombs, Billy Chace, Miranda McGee & Maggie Lou Rader

CSC’s holiday smash hit is back—bigger and better than ever! What begins as a traditional production of A Christmas Carol soon devolves into a slightly irreverent, but undeniably adoring look at all our pop culture Christmas faves, including Rudolph, Frosty, and good ol’ Charlie Brown. Three actors (with the help of a slightly tipsy Santa) lampoon everything from Dickens to Dr. Seuss in 90 minutes of high-octane jollity and frivolity.

Performances before Christmas have SOLD OUT and Standing Room Tickets are now available.  Standing Room is located in the Upper Gallery.

  • Thu-Fri, Dec. 21-22 at 7:30pm
  • Sat, Dec. 23 at 2pm & 7:30pm
  • Wed-Fri, Dec. 27-29 at 7:30pm
