New York Times Correspondents to Host Special
“52 Places To Go” Event at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s
New Theater on May 9, 2018

Join The New York Times’s inaugural 52 Places Traveler Jada Yuan for a conversation with National Correspondent John Eligon that could only happen in Cincinnati, with a view from the road at the event “Destination Cincinnati – And Beyond”.

CINCINNATI, OH – APRIL 25, 2018 at 7:30am – In January, Cincinnati was selected by the New York Times for its prestigious “52 Places To Go” annual feature, a list of must-see locations around the world that inspire its readers’ wanderlust. For the first time ever, the nation’s largest daily newspaper has also selected a “52 Places Traveler” who will report from the road as she visits each and every location on the list throughout 2018. The Cincinnati stop is planned for May when the 52 Places Traveler Jada Yuan will join New York Times veteran reporter John Eligon for a one-night-only special event, Wednesday, May 9 titled “Destination Cincinnati- And Beyond”. Cincinnati is the first city to host an exclusive event in conjunction with the 52 Places designation honor.

Titled “Destination Cincinnati – And Beyond,” the event will be held at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company where Yuan and Eligon will take the stage for an interview-style dialogue.  Logging almost four months of travel on her mission to visit each location on The Times’s 52 Places to Go in 2018 list, Ms. Yuan will first share practical travel tips and observations from the first 14 stops on her trip. She will be joined by Kansas City Bureau Chief and National Correspondent John Eligon, who has relocated to the Midwest from New York City, and traveled to Australia last year to report on its indigenous communities. The two Times journalists will discuss their journeys, the ever-evolving city of Cincinnati, and more at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s brand new theater, a cultural landmark mentioned in the 52 Place To Go article where it was reported that the seats, “none more than 20 feet from the stage, guarantee theatrical immersion” at this event!

CSC_New Theater outside at night“Over the last year, our region has earned not one, but six major stories in the New York Times showcasing our people and places. The first was a major travel feature in their popular ’36 Hours In…’ series and it culminated with earning a Top 10 spot on their coveted 2018 list of 52 Places to Go,” said Julie Calvert, executive director of Source Cincinnati, an organization that pursues positive national media coverage for the region. “This recognition is a definitive statement to the world that it’s time to experience all that the Cincinnati region offers.”

Yuan was chosen for the yearlong trek around the world from among 13,000 applicants. She has spent the last decade at New York magazine, covering celebrities, film festivals and presidential conventions. She grew up in northern New Mexico, has a degree in history from Yale University and currently lives in Brooklyn. In his 11 years at The Times, Eligon has covered a variety of topics ranging from sports to courts to politics. His work has taken him to South Africa to cover the death of Nelson Mandela and Turin to cover the Winter Olympics. As a national correspondent, John was in Cincinnati last June to cover the National Underground Railroad Freedom’s Center new Implicit Bias Lab for a Facebook Live event for more than 100,000 viewers.

The event will begin with networking and refreshments in the theater lobby at 6:00pm, followed by the conversation at 7pm on the main stage with a reception following. Seating is limited and is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased for $25 at https://cincyshakes.com/on-stage/new-york-times-event or by calling 513-381-2273. The New York Times selected the new CSC theater for this exclusive event because of its intimate environment, with no seat more than 20 feet from the stage. The Otto M. Budig Theater is located at 1195 Elm Street in downtown Cincinnati.  Valet parking is available for purchase.

“We were honored to be one of the featured venues that helped Cincinnati earn its place on the New York Times 2018 list,” said Jay Woffington, Executive Director of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. “It’s icing on the cake to be asked to host this special event on May 9, and we can’t wait to welcome Jada and John. Cincinnatians have always said we’d gladly put our arts and culture scene up against any in the world. It’s gratifying to see The Times give so many people around the globe a glimpse of Cincinnati and invite them to experience our region for themselves.”

NOISES OFF!
Cincinnati Shakespeare Company
May 18-June 9
[Over-the-Rhine]

The drama onstage is nothing compared to the drama backstage in Michael Frayn’s hysterical, fast-paced British sex farce about putting on a hysterical, fast-paced British sex farce. Lines, props, and pants are dropped in equal proportion as the bedraggled cast struggles valiantly to keep their production from going entirely off the rails. Don’t miss this fall-out-of-your-chair-funny production, where the sardines and the slamming doors abound.

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF Quick Review

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF presented Cincinnati Shakespeare Company through April 28. I attended the opening night performance.

In a word, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s production of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF is excellent. Director Michael Evan Haney has helmed a detailed and nuanced production that works extremely well in CSC’s new intimate theater.

Supported by an incredibly strong ensemble, it is the stand-out performances by Maggie Lou Rader, Jim Hopkins, and Grant Niezgodski that set this play apart.

As Maggie the Cat, Rader commands your attention. Sexy, confident, defiant, and yet exposing her desire to be loved by the very man who seems to hate her.

Jim Hopkins’ Big Daddy is larger than life, loud, and crass; but at the same time shows a sharp mind and open-mindedness beyond his station in life. His grand relief at having survived his own brush with mortality makes his fall to reality that much more tragic.

However, it is Niezgodski’ Brick that sets this production apart from others. Many times, I have seen Brick played as overly stoic, who mainly serves as the target for Maggie’s and Big Daddy’s pleas for answers to Brick’s deteriorating behavior. Grant’s Brick is completely engaged in every moment of conversation and displays a vulnerability in the character seldom seen. Ironically, I seemed to like Brick more the more drunk he became. You could hear a pin drop as Big Daddy and Brick confront their respective truths in the second half of act two.

The production crew doesn’t miss a beat. Set, lighting, properties, costumes, and hair work perfectly together to create a totally believable world.

Brutally honest, emotionally true, and deeply engaging, this is easily the best production of this Tennessee Williams American classic I have seen.

My rating: 5 out of 5.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Stages Sizzling Family Drama, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF

Tennessee Williams’s Pulitzer-winning drama, by turns sultry and explosive, comes to the The Otto M. Budig Theater directed by Michael Evan Haney

CINCINNATI, March 16, 2018 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company continues their Debut Season at The Otto M. Budig Theater with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, by Tennessee Williams. The production is directed by Michael Evan Haney, the former Associate Artistic Director of the Playhouse in the Park, and features Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s resident ensemble, including Maggie Lou Rader, Grant Niezgodski, Jim Hopkins, Justin McCombs, and Kelly Mengelkoch. This show is generously sponsored by Huntington, Murphy Landen Jones, and Roehr Insurance Agency.

The Pollitt family has gathered to celebrate their patriarch, the ailing Big Daddy (Jim Hopkins), but rumors of his declining health have everyone scheming to secure the largest part of the family estate. Meanwhile, Brick Pollitt (Grant Niezgodski) and his wife, Maggie (Maggie Lou Rader) wrestle with their own secret griefs and losses within their marriage. In the course of a single evening, relationships are tested, lies are exposed, and long-buried secrets at last come to light. This searing family drama by a true American master remains a potent exploration of the ties that bind, and sometimes strangle.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof won the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and remains as resonant today as when it was first performed. Director Michael Evan Haney says, “Living in this age where the truth is questioned constantly on a national level, it has been fascinating to work on a play like Cat on a Hot Tin RoofCat explores the lies and mendacity within the Pollitt family living on the Mississippi Delta. Lies between parents and children, brothers and sisters and husbands and wives, permeate this Tennessee Williams masterwork.” Longtime company member Maggie Lou Rader says of preparing to play the show’s iconic leading lady, Maggie “The Cat” Pollitt: “I first saw the film of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the one with Elizabeth Taylor, when I was just a kid, twenty-two years ago. Even though I didn’t quite understand yet everything she was talking about, I looked at her and thought ‘I really want to do that someday.’ And now, I’m so excited to finally dive into the role of Maggie the Cat.”

Director Michael Evan Haney previously directed at Cincinnati Shakespeare, helming The Hound of the Baskervilles and Oliver Twist. As Associate Artistic director for Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, he directed over thirty plays including four world premieres and A Christmas Carol for the past twenty-five seasons. He has also directed Off-Broadway for the Irish Rep and regionally for Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Alabama Shakespeare Festival and many others.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof runs April 6-28 with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM, as well as Saturday April 28 at 2:00 PM.  Preview performances are April 4 and 5 at 7:30 PM.

Single ticket prices range from $14-$52.  Student/Children and Preview tickets are only $28. If available that day, $14 student rush tickets may be purchased thirty minutes before a show with a valid student ID. This production is a part of this season’s subscription package. Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted. Ticketing fees may apply.  Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups as well as AAA members.
