Going Once…Going Twice…Gone Online!

Online Bidding Opens November 18 at
www.CincinnatiArts.ORG/backstage

Cincinnati, OH – At 8:00AM on Friday, November 18, 2011, the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) raises the curtain on its 8th annual Backstage Treasures…and More! – an online auction that supports CAA’s arts education programs. Once again, CAA is partnering with Bidding for Good, Inc. – the leading online auction platform for nonprofit and school fundraising – to bring the auction to its bidders and donors. Presenting Sponsors for Backstage Treasures and More are Lenox Wealth Management and Arthur Murray Cincinnati.

The auction will run from November 18 – November 28 – just in time for holiday shopping – and promises to have a major impact on the community. CAA members and other potential bidders will soon be receiving e-mails about the auction, which may be forwarded to their friends and family, thus creating an unlimited number of guests who will “virtually attend” and take part in the auction. The public can also participate by visiting the auction website at www.CincinnatiArts.ORG/backstage.

Once again, CAA has assembled an exciting catalog of unique auction items to encourage frequent bidding and excitement. Items up for bid include: chartered flights to New York City and Chicago, Fine Jewelry, an Exclusive Reds Batting Practice Experience, and many other exciting items and packages.

Money raised by the auction will benefit CAA’s arts and education programs, such as SchoolTime (which brings students to the Aronoff Center and Music Hall) and Artists on Tour (which takes local artists to area classrooms). In addition, funds will help support the visual arts programming at the Weston Art Gallery, including exhibitions by local and regional artists, the Gallery’s popular art programs for families, and Docentitos – its docent training for children.

Everyone is welcome to visit the auction online at www.CincinnatiArts.ORG/backstage to browse, shop, or just drop by and sign the guestbook to show their support of CAA. Item donations are still being accepted – simply log on to the site and click on the “Donate Now” button. Users can also contribute to the auction’s success by using the “Refer Friends” button.

MYTHBUSTERS: BEHIND THE MYTHS Coming March 19

Starring Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage
One performance only! Aronoff Center on Monday, March 19, 2012, 7:30 pm
Tickets go on sale on November 11 through CincinnatiArts.org

Mythbusters Adam Savage & Jamie Hyneman

(Cincinnati, OH) — The all-new, live show “MythBusters: Behind the Myths,” starring Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, co-hosts of the Emmy-nominated Discovery series “MythBusters,” will debut at Aronoff Center for one performance only on Monday, March 19, 2012 at 7:30 pm. Tickets go on sale Friday, November 11 at http://www.CincinnatiArts.org, (513) 621-ARTS (2787) or the Aronoff Center Ticket Office.

“MythBusters: Behind the Myths,” promises to be a fantastical evening of on-stage experiments, audience participation, rocking video and behind-the-scenes stories. For the first time ever, fans will join Jamie and Adam on stage and assist in their mind-blowing and mind-twisting approach to science.

“MythBusters: Behind the Myths” brings you face-to-face with the curious world of Jamie and Adam as the duo matches wits on stage with each other and members of the audience.

The show is on a 31-city national tour that begins in Modesto, California on January 6, 2012.

One of the Discovery Channel’s most highly-regarded and watched series, “MythBusters” is now in its ninth season. Co-hosted by Hyneman and Savage, “MythBusters” mixes scientific method with gleeful curiosity and plain old-fashioned ingenuity to create its own signature style of explosive experimentation – and the supporting or de-bunking of urban myths that we live with day to day.

Adam and Jamie have become spokespersons at large for applying science to real life – most recently as hosts of the Discovery Channel special “”iGenius: How Steve Jobs Changed the World,” and have appeared on numerous shows including “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Good Morning America,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “The Colbert Report,” NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “Morning Edition,” “Countdown with Keith Olberman,” and many more. They were invited to participate in Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s Rally to Restore Fear And/Or Sanity and have received the Young Artist Award for inspiring young people in the interest of science. “MythBusters” has been invited to participate on a panel at Comic-Con, where their appearances have sold-out four years running.

Adam and Jamie serve as guest editors for Popular Mechanics and were featured on the cover of the September 2009 issue. That same year, they were inducted as honorary members into Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. They are Honorary Lifetime Members of the California Science Teachers Association and were named Honorary Engineers and Honorary Members of the Francis Crowe Society at the University of Maine.

Adam and Jamie produced and starred in an H1N1 Public Service Announcement for the White House, and were chosen by the President to retest the Archimedes legend using 500 schoolchildren as surrogate soldiers.

They appeared as themselves in the movie Darwin Awards and have made several cameos on other TV shows, including CSI. And in 2010, Hyneman and Savage received the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism from the Harvard Secular Society.

About Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage
Jamie Hyneman is the owner of M5 Industries, an effects company specializing in problematic custom builds. Besides serving as headquarters of “MythBusters,” M5 continues to work on various research & development projects for private clients.

After trying his hand at careers as various as librarian at the United Nations in Geneva to running a diving and sailing charter business in the Caribbean, Hyneman began his career in show business as special effects shop assistant in New York and later in San Francisco as a crew member on films including “Robocop,” “Arachnophobia” and “Naked Lunch.”

While managing Colossal Pictures’ model shop in San Francisco, Hyneman was given the opportunity to take over – and M5 Industries was born.

Hyneman graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Russian. He has received an honorary engineering degree from the University of Maine as well as an honorary doctorate of engineering from Villanova University, with whom he has an ongoing collaborative relationship to help develop new safety concepts for the military. He is the holder of several patents and the winner of numerous industry awards.

Hyneman currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife.

Adam Savage joined M5 in 2002 after receiving a call from former boss Jamie Hyneman to participate in a TV pilot, which turned into the wildly popular Discovery Channel series “MythBusters.”

Savage immersed himself in the NYC arts scene before moving to San Francisco in 1990 to parlay his skills into the thriving theater scene. There he worked for dozens of companies as set designer, prop master, art director and producer before falling into the machine art community where he learned welding, pneumatics, hydraulics, electronics and robot-building.

After exhibiting his work in over 50 art shows nationwide, Savage caught the eye of the special effects industry and began working as a prop builder and art director for major commercials for Sega, Coca-Cola, Nike, Burger King and Chevrolet. His work on a Coca-Cola commercial earned him a Clio Award nomination.

After an 18-month stint as head of research & development for startup toy company ZOOB, Savage joined George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic, where he worked on “Star Wars: Episodes 1 and 2,” “Galaxy Quest,” “Space Cowboys,” “A.I.,” “Terminator 3,” “The Mummy,” and dozens of commercials. During this time he also worked as model-shop supervisor for the two “Matrix” sequels as well as taught at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.

Savage continues to dabble in his multiple hobbies, including passionately restoring his vintage four-wheel drive vehicle and accruing new pieces for his movie prop collection. He currently lives in San Francisco with his wife, twin boys and two dogs.

The Society for the Preservation of Music Hall Presents HAPPY HOLIDAYS WITH THE MIGHTY WURLITZER

featuring theatre-organist Ken Double,
with special guests, the Fairview-Clifton Kinderchor

CINCINNATI, OH – The Society for the Preservation of Music Hall (SPMH) is pleased to announce the return of Happy Holidays with the Mighty Wurlitzer to Cincinnati’s Music Hall on Thursday, December 15 at 10:30 AM and 7:00 PM. The popular holiday concert, being presented in cooperation with the Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Organ Society, sold-out its two performances in December 2010.

Tickets are on sale now at www.CincinnatiArts.ORG, (513) 621-ARTS [2787], and the Aronoff Center and Music Hall Ticket Offices. For group discount tickets (ten or more), call (513) 977-4157.

There’s nothing quite like the unique sound of the Albee Theater’s Mighty Wurlitzer – an orchestra and more all in one organ! Acclaimed theater-organist Ken Double will perform holiday favorites with all of the bells, whistles, and special effects that only an instrument as grand as the Mighty Wurlitzer can create! Special guests will include the Fairview-Clifton Kinderchor and, direct from the North Pole, Santa Claus. This memorable holiday concert promises to be a fun and festive event for the entire family.

“The excitement, joy, and fun of last year’s sold-out Mighty Wurlitzer holiday concert will definitely be repeated this season,” said Don Siekmann, SPMH President. “Everyone in the audience – from young to old – loved the experience. The uplifting music of the Mighty Wurlitzer, festive decorations, fabulous children’s choir, and special appearance by Santa will have everyone leaving Music Hall with a bounce in their step – smiling, singing, and truly happy they were with family and friends at Cincinnati’s newest holiday treat!”

The Mighty Wurlitzer was installed in the ornate Albee Theater on Fountain Square in December 1927 – one of only 2,200 theatre-organs produced at that time to accompany silent feature films. When talkies took over in 1929, the theatre organ was mainly silenced. The Albee organ was donated to the Emery Theatre in 1969 (where it played for movies and other events) and was partially rebuilt by the Ohio Valley Organ Club. It was removed from the Emery in 1999, and put into storage.

The leadership at SPMH thought the historic Music Hall Ballroom would be an ideal location for the instrument, and in June 2007, Ronald F. Wehmeier, Inc., Pipe Organ Service in Cincinnati was contacted to completely rebuild and install the Wurlitzer. A donor foundation funded the entire project in the amount of $1,410,000.00. Only a small number of Wurlitzers of this size still exist, and Cincinnati (the home of the Wurlitzer Company) is one of the few cities in the country to have an instrument of this quality.

The Wurlitzer was expanded in tonal colors and effects, from 19 ranks of pipes to 31 ranks (a rank is made up of 61 pipes, and represents orchestral sounds, such as trumpets, flutes, tubas, strings, etc.). A full array of percussion effects is also present – xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel, chimes, and even a large Steinway grand piano – all playable from the giant three keyboard and pedal console, decorated in 22-karat gold leaf. Wind for the pipes is provided by a 15 HP high pressure turbine, the electrical switching is controlled by computer, and pipes range in size from 16 feet to the size of a pencil. In addition, the Wurlitzer is now fully computerized, so that it can be played without an organist through a digital input system.

Ken Double
For more than thirty years, Ken has been heard on radio and seen on television as a sportscaster, and since 1978, has been at the console of the great theatre pipe organs, indeed working hard to entertain his audiences. Born in Chicago the last of six boys, his love of sports was just a normal part of growing up. Ken parlayed that into a degree in Radio-TV from Butler University in Indianapolis, and enjoyed a career that has included play-by-play in the NHL, AHL, NBA, major college sports, the Indianapolis 500, and more.

But even after thirty-plus years of broadcasting, Ken is still better known in certain circles for his talents at the pipe organ. During his organ concert career, Ken has performed all over the world, including stops in Seattle, WA; Wilmington, DE; Tampa, FL; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; the famous Casa Loma in Toronto; and three six-week tours throughout Australia. In addition to his hundreds of concerts, he has recorded numerous CDs, including The Music of Casa Loma – the first-ever CD and first release in more than thirty years on the great Wurlitzer in the Great Hall of Toronto’s historic castle.

For a full bio, visit Ken’s website at http://kendoubleentertainment.com.

Happy Holidays with the Mighty Wurlitzer is grateful for the generous support of The Walter and Olivia Kiebach Charitable Foundation (presenting sponsor) and WMKV-FM (media partner).

The Fairview-Clifton Kinderchor
A program of the Fairview-Clifton German Language School, the Kinderchor has become one of the most popular and talented children’s choirs in the city. The members of this German-language youth ensemble audition to be included in the acclaimed choir, which has performed to appreciative audiences throughout the Greater Cincinnati area. http://fairview.cps-k12.org/german_program.html

The Society for the Preservation of Music Hall
The Society for the Preservation of Music Hall (SPMH) is a non-profit organization that provides ongoing financial and volunteer support toward maintaining and improving Cincinnati’s historic Music Hall. SPMH members are volunteers from all walks of life who are dedicated to the continuing preservation of Music Hall as a national historic monument and promoting it as one of the world’s foremost performing arts, entertainment, and rental facilities. http://www.soc-pres-music-hall.com
