World Premiere of THE BIG PICTURE, Written by Two Miami Valley Residents Opens at BCT on March 2

Pam McGinnis of Oakwood, Brian Kester of Fairborn & Eric Bracht of Beavercreek rehearse THE BIG PICTURE.

Doug Lloyd of Dayton is directing the heart-warming new musical by David Brush of Troy, who wrote the script and lyrics, and Jim Farley of Piqua, who wrote the music.

It’s the summer of 1962 and college freshman Billy Carson, played by Brian Kester of Fairborn, is spending his first summer home with his mom and his best friend, portrayed by Pam McGinnis of Oakwood and Eric Bracht of Beavercreek, respectively.

With only a few clues, Billy sets out, with a renewed interest, to discover the father he never knew — B-Movie script writer and war hero, Jack Carson, played by Michael Shannon of West Carrollton.

Angela Umstead of Troy and Shawn Hooks of Dayton round out the cast.

When old wounds are opened and new loves are discovered, Billy realizes that coming home is more difficult, and ultimately more enlightening, than he ever imagined.

The crew includes music director, Jenn Clark of Beavercreek; choreographer, Stacy Gear of Kettering; lighting designer, John Falkenbach of Dayton; set designer and builder, Chris Harmon of Centerville; assistant set builder, Hans Unser of Beavercreek; stage manager, Dionne Meyer of Beavercreek and sound designer, David Meyer of Beavercreek.

MVP Creations in Beavercreek is designing the video for the show, which partly takes place in a drive-in theater.

The musical will be presented from March 2 to March 11, with 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Tickets are $13 for adults and $11 for students, BCT members and seniors, ages 55 and older. A group discount of $1 per ticket is available to groups of 10 or more when the tickets are purchased at the same time for the same performance.

This bright show is about an audience watching a play. Joe Preston has not had a hit in years, and is hoping his new play will revive his career. He is at the mercy of an off Broadway audience consisting of two typical “grey haired matinee ladies”, a married couple who fight all the time, an anxious young man waiting for his date, an illiterate rock singer trying to impress his date with some culture, a Texas business man and his culture vulture wife and three critics– one of whom hates Preston’s work and another who begged his editor not to assign him to his show because Sam, his lover who recently jilted him, is in the cast. Poor Joe Preston!

The Sugar Bean Sisters (An Edge of the Creek Production)

The Nettle sisters are determined to escape spinsterhood—Willie Mae by going to Salt Lake to find a good Mormon husband and Faye by hopping on a spaceship. Faye and Willie Mae return home to their ramshackle swamp dwelling in Sugar Bean, Florida, after a disastrous daytrip to Disney World, where Willie lost her prized Eva Gabor wig on Space Mountain. Having witnessed the landing of an alien space craft some 25 years ago, Faye prepares for their return. A strange bird-like woman suddenly appears out of the darkness of Buster Swamp, setting in motion a chain of extraordinary events. Lies begin to unravel and the truth is revealed as the Sugar Bean Sisters hatch a diabolical plot to ensure the space people’s return.

In this motley group of travelers, Lucy finds the father she had in mind and each person discovers what it means to be a family.

Steppin’ Out (BCT’s Main Stage)
Jan. 25 – Feb 3, 2013 Auditions – Nov. 26 & 27, 2012 Directed by John Falkenbach

This is a rollicking comedy about the attempts of some working class amateurs to overcome their inhibitions and two left feet in a low-rent dance studio in North London. Mavis, a former professional chorus girl tries her hardest to teach the bumbling amateurs some terpsichorean skills for an upcoming recital. But before the dancing begins Mavis must mediate the minor dramas that erupt among this motley but loveable crew on their way to triumph at their recital.

A Chorus Line (An Edge of the Creek Production)
March 1- 10, 2013 Auditions – Jan. 7 & 8, 2013 Directed by Doug Lloyd

A Chorus Line is a stunning musical about a chorus audition for a Broadway musical. It tells of the achingly poignant ambitions of professional Broadway gypsies to land a job in a show, and is powerful metaphor for all human aspirations. Memorable musical numbers include, I Can Do That, At the Ballet, Dance: Ten; Looks: Three, One (Singular Sensation), What I did for Love) and I hope I get it. Winner of 9 Tony awards and the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama

The Canterbury Tales or Geoffrey Chaucer’s Flying Circus (Youth)
April 19 – 28, 2013 Auditions – March 5 & 6, 2013 Directed by Teresa Connair

Start with Chaucer’s literary masterpiece, toss in a good helping of Monty Python-styled humor, and you get this incredibly silly comedy. You’ll meet many of the pilgrims whose tales are most likely to be studied in high school (along with a few Thanksgiving pilgrims that ended up in the wrong play!), including the knight, the miller, the parson, the pardoner, the nun’s priest and the friar. Even the wife of Bath has cleaned up her act for this adaptation and is now a nagging woman who sells self-help DVDs! The miller, too, makes an appearance, though nobody wants to hear anything he has to say!

Legally Blonde The Musical (BCT’s Main Stage)
June 21 – 30, 2013 Auditions – April 8 & 9, 2013 Directed by Chris Harmon

Sorority star Elle Woods doesn’t take “no” for an answer. So when her boyfriend dumps her for someone “serious,” Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style.

Beavercreek Community Theatre Present DEARLY BELOVED Jan. 20-29

Kelli Gilmore as Nelda Lightfoot.

When an elegant catered wedding reception turns into a pig roast and potluck dinner, the mother of the bride thinks things can’t get any worse — she’s wrong!

In “Dearly Beloved,” presented by Beavercreek Community Theatre, Frankie Futrelle Dubberly’s daughter is marrying the son of the tiny Texas town’s richest, snootiest woman. Frankie, played by Jennie Hawley of Huber Heights, wants everything to be just right but even talking to her dead mother in heaven can’t make it so.

The comedy, presented at 8 p.m. Jan. 20, 21, 27 and 28 and at 3 p.m. on January 23 and 29, finds the Futrelle sisters and their family in the midst of yet another series of life-changing events.

Frankie’s plans for a lavish, “Gone with the Wind” wedding quickly falls apart, especially when her sisters, portrayed by Monique Hobbs of Centerville and Marabeth Klejna of Kettering, get involved.

It’s been about 20 years since the scandalous breakup of the sisters’ almost-famous gospel singing trio, The Sermonettes, and they find themselves working through some of those old issues while dealing with the current wedding fiasco.

The cast includes Teresa Connair of Dayton, Kelli Gilmore of Enon, Terry Larson of Beavercreek, Jeff Lucas of Yellow Springs, Craig Smith of Springboro, Jim Spencer of Dayton, Gary Thompson of Englewood and Rachel Wilson of Dayton.

The director is Jeff Sams of Franklin. The stage manager is Steve Strawser of Kettering, assisted by Lesa Gootee of Beavercreek, and the set builder is Chris Harmon of Beavercreek, assisted by Hans Unser, also of Beavercreek.

The costumer is Anne Heitker of Beavercreek and the light designer is John Falkenbach of Dayton. Jim Brown of West Carrollton is the music director and Dave Pope is the sound designer. The producers are Diana Blowers and Roberta Shiverdecker, both of Beavercreek.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $11 for members, students and senior citizens.

A group discount of $1 per ticket is available to groups of 10 or more, when purchased at the same time for the same performance.

Tickets can be reserved by calling (937) 429-4737 and leaving a message or by e-mailing boxoffice@bctheatre.org. For more information, visit the theater’s Web site at http://www.bctheatre.org where tickets can also be purchased online.
