Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Presents Regional Premiere Comedy I NEED THAT, Feb. 8–March 2

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) kicks off the new year with the regional premiere comedy I Need That, by award-winning playwright Theresa Rebeck (Bad Dates, NBC’s Smash). Rebeck, a Cincinnati native and Broadway’s most-produced female playwright, will also direct this new hilarious, heartfelt, and human play about a curmudgeonly father, his exasperated daughter, his patient best friend, and life’s messes. Following its successful Broadway run, I Need That takes the ETC stage February 8 March 2, 2025.

Sam doesn’t get out much. Actually, he doesn’t get out at all, opting instead for the safety of his house in the company of his things—his many, many things. But when a notice from the government arrives alerting Sam that he must clean up his property or face eviction, he’s forced to reckon with what’s trash, what’s treasure, and whether we can ever know the difference between the two.

“I got a phone call one day from Theresa Rebeck . . . THE Theresa Rebeck and she said, ‘I’d like to direct this play at ETC’,” says Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “It feels like this show was gifted to us at the right time and with the right people. Theresa pioneered very rough terrain in the film, television, and theatre industry and has changed the face of female writers forever. Her writing is so good that it cannot be ignored.”

2024 Pulitzer Prize-Wining Play and Off-Broadway Hit PRIMARY TRUST Begins Feb. 1 in the Rouse Theatre

CINCINNATI (Jan. 16, 2025) – Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will begin the second half of its 2024-25 season with PRIMARY TRUST, a recent off-Broadway hit that won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Presented by Moe & Jack Rouse and Randolph Wadsworth, the production begins Feb. 1 and runs through Feb. 23. Opening night is Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

PRIMARY TRUST tells the story of friendship and connection through Kenneth, a shy, Black 38-year-old man who sells books by day and drinks Mai tais with his best friend Bert by night. When Kenneth is suddenly laid off from his job, the walls of his comfortable, predictable life start to crumble until he finds kindness and friendship in unlikely places.

Critics hailed PRIMARY TRUST as “utterly absorbing” (The Daily Beast) and “wonderfully vivid” (The New York Times). The Los Angeles Times wrote the play was, “As tenderhearted as it is spryly comic and as poignant as it is ultimately uplifting.”

Fan-favorite Timothy Douglas returns to direct the Playhouse production of a play that captured the hearts of audiences and critics alike when it premiered off-Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre Company in 2023. It’s currently the most-produced play in the US.

Douglas said, “…the play’s humanistic, often humorous, and equally contemplative journey is a wholly inviting one. On a fundamental level the play reflects an ongoing reassessment of having to navigate one’s priorities in a post-pandemic America. Although packed with incident, the gentle way in which the storytelling unfolds, perhaps provides a meditative balance to other playgoing experiences that may demand more intense rigor from its audience.”

Ultimately, PRIMARY TRUST is a testament to the enduring power of human connection. As Kenneth navigates unexpected changes and forges new bonds, audiences are invited to reflect on their own lives and the connections that shape their experiences.

“The antidote (to loneliness) for me has been really feeling connected and seen by other people. It sounds so Mickey Mouse, but we need each other, and I think that’s important, and to be able to let people in is crucial,” said Playwright Eboni Booth.

Stormy Season Brings THE TEMPEST to Anderson High School

Cast includes senior Colton Copley as Trinculo, senior Adam Miller as Caliban, senior Will Cox as Stephano, junior Liberty Lamb as Prospero, and senior Addie Lutes as Ariel.

The students of Anderson Theatre have been enduring harsh weather for weeks, but not from the January snow storms. They have been immersed in William Shakespeare’s masterful play “The Tempest,” which begins with a magical storm and a shipwreck.

Cast onto the shore of a mysterious island with her mother’s court, young Prince Ferdinand cannot help but fall in love with the innocent Miranda, who has lived on the island for most of her life. But Miranda’s own mother, Prospero, is not just a mighty sorcerer, she is also a banished Duchess who has her own plans for the castaways.

The play opens the weekend of January 31st, and is Directed by Anderson Theatre Teacher Hannah Linser-Wilder. “We are creating a unique world,” says Linser-Wilder, “Prospero rules the island, but it is also filled with native spirits, led by the air spirit Ariel. Our Tempest is spectacle driven, featuring puppets, dance, circus tricks, and fantastical costumes.”

There are over 65 students involved in “The Tempest,” including 24 performers on stage and a large and skilled student crew. The set was designed by senior Maria Timmers, a special arrangement that Timmers earned through expertise, creativity, and a four-year commitment to building sets at Anderson.

“The Tempest” runs through February 2nd, with 7:00 performances on Friday and Saturday and a 3:00 matinee on Sunday. Tickets are available now, with a special discounted Senior/Student price only available before opening night. All tickets at the door will be $15. For full information and tickets, visit AndersonTheatre.com.
