WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE SEA Runs Aug. 30-Sept. 28

WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE SEA
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Aug. 30-Sept. 28
Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theater [Eden Park]

Directed by Timothy Douglas

A poignant, beautiful story of parallel journeys. After he learns of his estranged father’s death, Jonah recreates the cross-country trip his Haitian immigrant parents took before he was born. As he traces their journey across America and bonds with the music his father adored, time blurs and erases the distance between them as Jonah seeks to understand his father’s life and legacy. Lyrical storytelling and live folk music weave an emotional and evocative tale of rediscovering love and the everlasting bond of a father and son. WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE SEA is recommended for older teenagers and adults. As a father and son detail their separate cross country journeys, they recall experiences that include descriptions of sexual activity and mature themes involving health complications, grief and sexual identity (with the use of one derogatory slur).

In 1913, Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia, is put on trial for the murder of thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker under his employ. Already guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor’s false testimony seal Leo’s fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion.  Daring, innovative and bold, Parade is filled with soaring music and a heart-wrenching story, offering a moral lesson about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance that should not be forgotten.

BRIGHT STAR is a heartwarming and uplifting musical suitable for most audiences, but it does include some mature plot elements. These include an unplanned pregnancy, some alcohol use, and a moment of intense action involving a baby. Nothing graphic is shown onstage, and the show ultimately centers on themes of hope, love, and redemption. Parents may wish to use discretion for younger children.
