THE CHOSEN Runs April 13-May 12

THE CHOSEN
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
April 13-May 12
The Rouse Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed by Aaron Posner

Cast: Eli Mayer* as Reuven Malter, Hillel Rosenshine* as Danny Saunders, Steve Routman* as David Malter & Ron Orbach* as Reb Saunders

How can two directly opposing ideas exist together? Chaim Potok’s classic novel intimately explores such complex and thought-provoking questions in a moving adaptation for the stage. It’s 1940s Brooklyn where two Jewish boys, Reuven and Danny, are both immersed in the religious instruction of their fathers and the traditions of their disparate communities. They live five blocks from each other but are a world apart. However, fate plays its hand, in the strangest of ways, and forges a life-changing friendship as they grow into adulthood. This hugely popular adaptation — often selling out theatres across the U.S. — is a heartfelt exploration of Jewish culture and the human ability to reach out across differences. THE CHOSEN is recommended for teenage and adult audiences. As Reuven and Danny navigate adolescence and young adulthood, they and their fathers discuss complex themes and ideas regarding the Jewish faith, world affairs of the 1940s and other mature issues.

THE MATCH GAME Runs April 13-May 5

ETC_Match GameTHE MATCH GAME
Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati
April 13-May 5
[Over-the-Rhine]

Directed by Jared Doren

Cast: Savannah Boyd as Nora, Bruce Cromer as Johnny, Deb G. Girdler as Deb, Henry Howland as Sean, Jared Joplin as Brian, Jennifer Joplin as Steph & Allen R. Middleton as Alan

A world premiere comedy! Steph has typical mid-life woes on her plate: a precocious daughter about to graduate high school and an absentee father who just moved in, who may or may not be faking dementia. Oh, and did we mention she has a little bit of cancer? Steph has ulterior motives for letting in her dad and a grand scheme to pull it off. When the family gathers for a birthday party with a hidden agenda, they’re forced to confront the truths they’ve been too afraid to acknowledge. The 2022 winner of the Jackie Demaline playwriting competition, this world premiere comedy hilariously reflects on how families aren’t always well matched. As Steph and her family navigate hard truths and schemes, they use adult language and mentions of sexual relationships. Steph and (possibly) her father are dealing with serious health conditions, and cancer and Alzheimer’s are heavily discussed, albeit with a healthy dose of levity and humor.

Robin Hood is (and has always been) Maid Marian in disguise, and leads a motley group of Merry Men (few of whom are actually men) against the greedy Prince John. As the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, who will stand for the vulnerable if not Robin? What is the cost of revealing your true self in a time of trouble?Modern concerns and romantic entanglements clash on the battlefield and on the ramparts of Nottingham Castle. A play about selfishness and selflessness and love deferred and the fight. Always the fight. The fight must go on. Contains adult situations.
