Tuesday, June 8, 2021

CINCINNATI, OH – Step Afrika!’s powerful, pulsing, world premiere piece, Stono, highlights the spirit of resistance and activism of a part of American history that has often been overlooked. The Cincinnati Arts Association is pleased to present this 30-minute virtual experience, which will be available for streaming June 5-18.

Access to the streamed performance of Stono and a live CANDID CONVERSATION via Zoom on Tuesday, June 8 at 7:30 PM with C. Brian Williams, the Founder and Artistic Director of Step Afrika!, and a variety of local artists is on sale now at CincinnatiArts.org and (513) 621-ARTS [2787]. The virtual events may be purchased separately at $6.00 each or in combination for $10.00.

Stono spotlights the largest insurrection of enslaved Africans in North America on September 9, 1739, which began in South Carolina on the banks of the Stono River. Some 20 Africans marched south toward a promised freedom in Spanish Florida, waving flags, beating drums, and shouting “Liberty!” When Africans subsequently lost the right to use their drums, through The Negro Act of 1740, they began to use their bodies as percussive instruments in response, giving rise to ring shout, tap, hambone, and stepping. Stono is based on choreography and content from Step Afrika!’s feature-length production, Drumfolk, returning to stages Fall 2021.

About Step Afrika!
Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Step Afrika! performances are much more than dance shows; they integrate songs, storytelling, and humor. The blend of technique, agility, and pure energy makes each performance unique and leaves the audience with their hearts pounding. Step Afrika! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding. NOT NOW DARLING Zoom Reading on May 16

BPI_logoBeechmont Players is holding their next ZOOM play reading on SUNDAY afternoon, May 16th from 2-4pm

Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84377866473?pwd=RlhjSW8wMFVtYjdsOWR5M0Q5MnZQQT09

The play is NOT NOW DARLING, by John Chapman and Ray Cooney.

ZOOM readings aren’t the same as live, but they provide a great chance to experience unknown shows and socialize with your theater buddies.  And we hope they’ll be a reminder of why we started working with Beechmont Players in the first place!

Speaking of which, keep an eye open for Beechmont’s first post-pandemic production—THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST. Auditions will be held in mid-July for a November 5-13 run.

This tremendously successful West End farce is set in the elegant fur salon of Bodley, Bodley & Crouch. Gilbert Bodley, a flamboyant extrovert, is scheming to seduce a beautiful stripper, Janie, with the aid of a £5,000 mink. Unfortunately, she is married and her husband, Harry, would notice such an acquisition. So Gilbert reduces the mink to £500 and Janie tries to get Harry to buy the coat for her, Gilbert paying the difference. Harry realizes a bargain when he sees one, but buys it instead for his own curvaceous little secretary, Sue.

Gilbert is quite demented by this turn of events and both he and his dithering assistant, Arnold Crouch, are further embarrassed when Janie strips and refuses to leave the salon without the mink. Their frenzied attempts to retrieve the coat from Sue and hide the naked Janie are further complicated by the unexpected arrival of Gilbert’s wife, Maude. Meanwhile, Arnold’s method of hiding any discarded ladies’ underwear is to throw them out of the window and it is left to Miss Tipdale, the firm’s spinster secretary, to retrieve the garments and the situation whenever necessary. The hilarious permutations reach a point of hysteria before everyone gets their just desserts.

The Cast:

  • Sue Lawson…Katherine Anderson
  • Miss Tipdale… Dava Lynn
  • Miss Whittington / Mrs. Frencham…Mary Puetz
  • Janie McMichael…Aubrey Wilson
  • Maude Bodley…Lynne Aaronson
  • Arnold Crouch…Jim Waldfogle
  • Gilbert Bodley…David Abbot
  • Harry McMichael…Bryce Willson
  • Commander Frencham/Mr. Lawson…Steve Phelan

We thank the writers, casts and crews of all of the Home View productions for their time, effort and creativity. They have managed to produce 13 videos safely while working within Covid protocols and restrictions Their courage and dedication to this project is greatly appreciated by TDW and something our audiences would soundly applaud – if they could.”

Dennis Murphy directed the video and portrays Detective Royal. Detective Francis is played by Nicholas Dunker. NKU SOTA Streams Musical Journey FUGITIVE SONGS

NKU_Fugitive Songs logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts continues its streaming production season with “Fugitive Songs” by award-winning writers Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen. “Fugitive Songs” will be available on-demand through ShowTix4U May 6-9, 2021.

“Living through a pandemic and watching the world search for ways to move forward, I felt that producing a song cycle about people feeling trapped and isolated, then searching and finding ways to break free really speaks to the current climate,” said director Jamey Strawn. “The pandemic has caused so much self-evaluation, the pressures of each day becoming too much and forcing the urge to escape it all by running away. Fugitive Songs speaks to our hearts, showcasing those who find themselves on the run, sorting through their emotional baggage and navigating their way through a restless America.”

  • What: FUGITIVE SONGS by Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen
  • When: May 6-9,2021
  • Where: Online at ShowTix4U
  • Admission: $4 for On-Demand 48-hour rental

“Fugitive Songs” consists of 19 songs and takes the viewer on a journey across America in the form of a song cycle. The writers describe the show as “part musical, part hootenanny,” blending traditional folk music with contemporary pop and gospel. The overarching theme in the show is the urge to run away.

The NKU cast features Ethan Baker, Jackson Hurt, Je’Shaun Jackson, Blair Lamb, Ellie O’Hara, Danielle Ullman with Maiya Caldwell and Judah Stevens. Norse Media and Chris Strobel graciously provided filming and editing support during the production process.
