MPI Announces Auditions for THE GLASS MENAGERIE

Mariemont Players Announces Auditions For
The Glass Menagerie

mpi_logoDirector Laura Boggs will hold auditions for the Mariemont Players production of The Glass Menagerie, the classic drama by Tennessee Williams, at the Walton Creek Theater, 4101 Walton Creek Road (just east of Mariemont) at 7:00pm on Sunday, September 14th and at 7:00pm on Monday, September 15th, 2014.

In Tennessee Williams’ shattering classic, an aging Southern Belle longs for her youth and dreams for a better life for her children. Her restless son Tom — a would-be poet and the story’s narrator — gets swept up in his mother’s funny and heartbreaking schemes to find his painfully shy sister, Laura, a husband. The Glass Menagerie is considered to be one of the most beautiful dramas in American theatre.

The cast consists of two women and two men:

Amanda Wingfield (Age is flexible, at least mid to late fifties and older):
The Mother
Clings desperately to another time and place.  She is sometimes unwittingly cruel to her children, but is well-intentioned.  The actor playing this role must find the humanity in her and not play her as a villain.

Laura Wingfield (Age: Twenties, though flexible):
The Daughter
Crippled by a childhood illness, Laura is afraid of the world and lives a life of fantasy through her fragile glass collection.

Tom Wingfield (Age: Older than Laura, probably mid to late twenties/early thirties):
The Son
Tom is a poet at heart, trapped in a blue-collar job, living a life he hates.  He is desperate to escape, but is the only hope for his mother and sister.

Jim O’Connor (Age: Similar age to Tom, mid to late twenties/early thirties):
The Gentleman Caller
Nice, ordinary young man.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a short monologue, plus there will be readings from the script.

The production will be staged January 9th through January 25th, 2015.

(No auditioners admitted after 8:00 PM)

SHOW DATES: Dec 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21

PUTTING IT TOGETHER is a musical revue showcasing the songs of Stephen Sondheim (SWEENEY TODD, FOLLIES, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED…). Drawing its title from a song in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, it celebrates Sondheim’s incomparable career in musical theatre.

Featuring nearly 30 Sondheim tunes, PUTTING IT TOGETHER is all performed by only five people thrown together at a party in a Manhattan penthouse. With a bit of imagination, the guests transform the apartment into the stage of an abandoned theatre, an estate in Sweden, an island outside of Paris, a street off the Roman Forum, the woods of a fairy tale, and a mythical town in the Southwest.

Character Breakdown:

MAN 1
Party host. Rich. Hard-working. Pompous. Bit of a sexual pig. Big brother type to Man 2. Outwardly perfect, but inwardly miserable in his marriage. Emotionally absent and tired of his equally absent wife.
Male, 40-50 yrs old
Range: F3 – G5

MAN 2
Not as confident as his colleague, who he possesses a younger brother type of relationship with. Cerebral and calculated with charm. Enjoys being a bachelor, but may have a desire to become married someday.
Male, 25-35 yrs old
Range: G3 – G5

MAN 3
The uninvited party guest. Awkwardly honest with people he doesn’t know and serves lots of unwarranted commentary. Mischievous, kooky, and forward.
Male, 30-45 yrs old
Range: F3 – G5

WOMAN 1
Party hostess. Rich. Outwardly happy but truthfully miserable with her marriage. Regal and proper, yet depressed and shallow. Yearns to become a mother but is discontent with her distant husband.
Female, 40-50 yrs old
Range: E3 – G5

WOMAN 2
A maid who eventually becomes a party guest. Winsome and sexy, she routinely acts out because of her ‘loneliness.’ Ditzy, with little book smarts, but knows how to turn manipulate people as a sultry seductress.
Female, 20-30 yrs old
Range: G3 – G5

More information to follow.

Any questions may be directed to the producer, Ray Persing, at 937-877-6116. If you are cast and the role is accepted you must become a member of The Drama Workshop prior to receiving your script.

PS Announces Auditions for NOISES OFF

PSI_logoCalled the funniest farce ever written, NOISES OFF presents a manic menagerie as a cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called “Nothing’s On.” Doors slamming, on and offstage intrigue, and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play.

Auditions will be held on August 11 and 12 at 7pm and will consist of cold readings only. Please bring a list of conflicts for August 19-October 5. Callbacks, will be held on Wednesday August 13.

Performances are September 26, 27, October 3, 4 at 8 PM and September 28 and October 5 at 2 PM. Rehearsals will be Monday-Friday with a four day weekend given for Labor Day.

With questions, please contact the director, Jenni Cypher, at jennic42@gmail.com

CHARACTERS:

  • LLOYD FELLOWES – director of the play, 40-55. Artistic, tyrannical, pretentious, cranky, not a “people person” but a bit of a ladies’ man. Thinks everyone is an idiot but him. He’s wrong. Involved with Brooke AND with Poppy.
  • DOTTY OTLEY – actress, plays housekeeper Mrs. Clackett, 50s. Basically sensible, but prone to flights of melodrama. Her retirement money is wrapped up in this production, so the stakes are high for her. Involved with Gary.
  • GARY LEJEUNE – actor, plays harried real estate broker Roger, 30s. Pompous and self-absorbed, but also so neurotic he literally can’t finish a sentence. Oversensitive and easily wounded. Has anger management difficulties. Involved with Dotty.
  • BROOKE ASHTON – actress, plays lingerie-clad tax inspector Vicki, 18-25. Gorgeous, but out to lunch. Distracted, unfocused, basically well-meaning but oblivious. She is NOT dumb, but it’s easy to see why someone would think she was. Involved with Lloyd.
  • FREDERICK DALLAS – actor, plays the dashing and wealthy Philip, 30s. Goodhearted, naïve, deplores physical violence, handsome and knows it, would like to be a Method actor but doesn’t really get it. Currently in the middle of a nasty divorce.
  • BELINDA BLAIR – actress, plays the charming and wealthy Flavia, 30s. Bright, fun-loving, gossipy optimist, knows everyone’s business. Secret Machiavellian, cast mother and doggedly determined show savior. May harbor a little crush on Frederick.
  • SELSDON MOWBRAY – actor, plays the rather incompetent Burglar, 60-75. Slightly doddering, alcoholic, half-deaf (when he wants to be), charming old duffer of a stage veteran. In decline, but craftier than he seems.
  • POPPY NORTON-TAYLOR – stage manager, 30s. Mousy, shy, maybe a little plain. Constantly stressed and harried, along with Tim takes the brunt of Lloyd’s and the actors’ abuse. Tries very, very hard to be good at her job. Involved with Lloyd.
  • TIM ALLGOOD – stagehand, 18-25. Very young, raw, inexperienced, is absolutely and shamelessly taken advantage of by Lloyd. When not asleep on his feet, performs his duties with almost manic enthusiasm

MLT Announces Auditions for THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO

MLT_logoTHE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO
Written by Alfred Uhry
Directed by Charley Shafor

About the Show:
THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, in December of 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta’s elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. Especially concerned is the Freitag family. The family gets pulled apart and then mended together with plenty of comedy, romance and revelations along the way. Events take several unexpected turns as the characters face where they come from and are forced to deal with who they really are.

Audition Dates:
Sunday, August 10 @ 2pm
Monday & Tuesday August 11 & 12 @ 7pm

If you can’t make one of the audition days please email cshafor@middletownlyric.org for an appointment

(Performance Dates: DECEMBER 5, 6, 12 & 13)

Middletown Lyric Theater
1530 Central Avenue

  • Boo Levy, Adolf’s sister, a few years older.  Boo is unstoppable force.  She voices her opinions with little regard as to their effect on others. Her main objective is to have her daughter Lala attend ballyhoo and meet a future husband. (Late 30’s to late 40’s early 50’s)
  • Lala Levy, Boo’s daughter, Lala is a dreamer, somewhat immature for her age and just as opinionated as her mother.  She is obsessed with the premiere of Gone With the Wind, as she sees herself as a future novelist.  (18 – to mid-20’s)
  • Reba Freitag, Adolf’s sister. Although Reba often appears oblivious to the family’s on-goings, Reba is the voice of reason and truth.  Her insights as to what is really going on is honest and objective.  She is colorful and warm. (Late 30’s to late 40’s early 50’s)
  • Sunny Freitag, Reba’s daughter.  Sunny is well educated, but struggles with understanding  and accepting her Jewish heritage.  She is pretty and sharp and is many of the things Lala is not. (18 – to mid-20’s)
  • Joe Farkas, Adolf’s business assistant. Joe is the unexpected visitor and the outside voice that causes the Frietag household to re-examine its Jewish identity.  Joe is the intellectual match for Sunny. (18 – to mid-20’s)
  • Peachy Weil, a visitor from Lake Charles. With a name like Peachy, the fun begins.  This well to do young man from a socially acceptable family, is a possible date for Lala and Ballyhoo. Peachy is full of surprises with his outspoken, silly prankster personality. (18 – to mid-20’s)
