Second Saturday Fringe Update (Sell-Outs for Sat and SERIALS 3 Titles)

KTC_Serials 3 logoThe final day of the 2015 Cincinnati Fringe Festival is upon us. Sad panda 😦

On Friday, there was one sold out performance, and that was MOONLIGHT AFTER MIDNIGHT. I’d highly encourage you to catch the last performance today EXCEPT, Saturday’s performance has already sold out. Also selling out their final performance today is EDGAR ALLAN.

If only someone had told you that these two were the two most buzzed about shows of the festival a week ago. 🙂

Even with the sold out performances, there are still 21 other fringe shows to choose from today. It’s not too late to get your Fringe on.

During Friday’s Fringe News, the titles and playwrights for SERIALS 3: ROUNDHOUSE were announced.

The twist for this go around, each week they switch which playwright is writing which story, so not even the original authors know where each show is headed.

The titles and starting playwrights are:

  • HANGING WITH BEN from John Bromels
  • #RoxyBalboa from Andy Simpson and Alexx Rouse
  • IN THE WEEDS from Kate Fine
  • THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE ELDERLY from Robert Macke
  • FIRE DOWN BELOW from Ben Dudley

Look for more details on the shows next week, but plan on joining in on the fun. Episode dates are June 29, July 13, Aug. 3, Aug. 17 and Aug. 31. ROUNDHOUSE season passes are available for $60.

Finally, if you need a little help dealing with your post-Fringe blues, the Know Theatre’s bar will be open from noon-6pm on Sunday. Stop down and share your Fringe 2015 war stories over a drink or two.

Second Wednesday Fringe Update

CFF_We Gotta Cheer Up GaryWednesday night brought another sell-out performance for WE GOTTA CHEER UP GARY by Four Humors, LLC.

Thanks for purchasing the UltimateCheerUp®package from Four Humors, LLC. When it comes to being professionally cheered up, we know you have lots of options, so thanks for choosing us to do it right. With more than 10 years of professional cheer-up experience, we guarantee 100% satisfaction! Our trained staff will be on hand to cheer up your FRIEND, GARY at the CINCINNATIFRINGEFESTIVAL on DAYOFWEEK, MAY 26 – JUNE 6 at TBA o’clock. See you then!

Their final two this week are:

  • Fri, June 5 at 9:20pm
  • Sat, June 6 at 3:00pm

CFF_Hungry MotherAlso selling out on Wednesday was the one performance only, fringe development piece HUNGRY MOTHER, written and performed by Alison Vodnoy Wolf. I was unable to make that performance but I have heard nothing but raves from those who did. Sounds like a great choice for a Fringe Encore, hint hint.

Russian folklore depicts Baba Yaga as a child-eating crone. But, who was Baba Yaga when she eighteen? What if her energy was eternally alive in our political, familial, and sexual relationships? Travel through space and time to meet Yaga at three different ages, in three different eras and locations. HUNGRY MOTHER explores Baba Yaga as a contemporary archetype, asking: when should we eat and when should we be eaten? Come ready to play Bingo.

CFF_Bane IV logoOn Tuesday night, the world premiere of BANE IV, also a fringe development piece, sold out. I’ve heard nothing but raves for this new work as well.

BANE is a series of comedy monologues about a hired gunslinger, Bruce Bane, who shoots first and asks questions later. Joe Bone plays all the characters and simulates all the action, with no props, set or costume changes. Alongside Ben Roe’s riveting live guitar soundtrack, these multi-award winning series of shows have toured all over the world to critical acclaim.

IF_Kevin McDonaldOne final bit of news comes from OTRimprov, the hosts of IF Cincy (Improv Festival of Cincinnati) running Sept. 10-13, 2015. The headliner for the second annual festival is Kevin McDonald of Kids in the Hall fame. As part of the event, Kevin will also be teaching a sketch comedy writing class.

Be sure to keep an eye on the official website www.ifcincy.com and Facebook fan page for more information as it is released.

If you haven’t made it down to the Cincinnati Fringe yet, performances continue through Saturday.

Monday Fringe Update (Seven Sell Outs)

Sunday’s full day of performances brought a swarm of people down to Over-the-Rhine, resulting in seven sell-out performances.

CFF_Edgar AllanThe Coldharts’ EDGAR ALLAN sold out its second consecutive performance on Sunday.

Eleven year old Edgar Allan has one goal: to be the most remarkable boy at boarding school. He has only one obstacle: Edgar Allan. A manic lullabye inspired by the childhood and short stories of Edgar Allan Poe..

Two performances remain. I recommend purchasing your tickets in advance.

  • Thur, June 4 at 8:40pm
  • Sat, June 6 at 7:25pm

CFF_Moonlight After MidnightBuzzed about MOONLIGHT AFTER MIDNIGHT by Concrete Drops Theatre Company enjoyed their first sell-out.

Love, loss, memory, and mystery intertwine when a beautiful woman and a secretive man enact scenes from a relationship in the private theater of a midnight hotel room.

Two more chances to catch this one. I’ll be in the audience on Friday.

  • Fri, June 5 at 6:30pm
  • Sat, June 6 at 8:40pm

Also receiving its second completely full house was SHELTER, a collaboration between local groups Pones Inc. and Queen City Flash.

At the end of the world, a teenage couple seek refuge in a backyard fallout shelter. As lights flicker and sirens blare, their internment reveals the cracks between them and their reliance on each other. They soon discover that survival isn’t what you escape, but what you bring with you.

Their final two performances are:

  • Mon, June 1 at 6:30pm
  • Thur, June 4 at 9:00pm

CFF_SquaresSQUARES received its second sell out with its final performance on Sunday.

The rules of the playground were simple: play nice, play fair, and have fun. But the rules of life? More complicated. Play nice, and you’re not assertive enough; play fair, and fall behind. And only winners have fun. Sometimes it seems like the bullies are still king. That hardly seems fair, or right, or… American. Can you retake the blacktop and square game, for all of us?

But fear not. Dog & Pony DC is bringing its production of BEERTOWN to the Know Main Stage in March of 2016.

CFF_Tales Too Tall For TrailersFringe-favorite Paul Strickland, teamed this year with Erika Kate MacDonald, are looking for a hat trick tomorrow night after their second consecutive sold out performance of TALES TOO TALL FOR TRAILERS.

Trailer-park tall-tales for adults that kids can enjoy too! Paul Strickland (Ain’t True and Uncle False, Papa Squat’s Store of Sorts) and Erika Kate MacDonald join forces in this off-kilter musical comedy full of funny songs, strange southern stories, shadow puppetry and more!

Three shows remain:

  • Tue, June 2 at 8:25pm
  • Wed, June 3 at 7:30pm
  • Fri, June 5 at 8:15pm

CFF_We Gotta Cheer Up GaryFringe-veterans Four Humors, LLC performed to a sitting-room only packed house with WE GOTTA CHEER UP GARY.

Our trained staff will be on hand to cheer up your FRIEND, GARY at the CINCINNATIFRINGEFESTIVAL on DAYOFWEEK, MAY 26 – JUNE 6 at TBA o’clock. See you then!

Three more shows this week:

  • Wed, June 3 at 9:10pm
  • Fri, June 5 at 9:20pm
  • Sat, June 6 at 3:00pm

CFF_You Seem Pretty GreatClosing out the list is YOU SEEM PRETTY GREAT by returning Fringer Mike Fotis.

YOU SEEM PRETTY GREAT is a storytelling show about dogs and meeting new people and not worrying so much and believing that we all have an amazing story in us! YSPG combines storytelling, improv and audience participation into one unique and hilarious audience experience. It’s basically a total giggle fest.

Mike is doing double duty this Fringe as he is also performing in WE GOTTA CHEER UP GARY. You have three more chances to catch his solo show:

  • Tue, June 2 at 6:30pm
  • Thur, June 4 at 7:45pm
  • Sat, June 6 at 7:30pm

Six more days of performances to go. Take the plunge!

Sunday Fringe Update (Three Sell Outs)

The first Saturday of Fringe added three more sold out performances.

CFF_Radio Gomorrah LiveRADIO GOMORRAH LIVE! produced by local group The Burying Beetles sold out their third show.

It’s the future: Ecosystems in collapse. The One-Percent cavorts in Mercedes escape pods while the rest of us – enslaved by our micro-chip implants – roast rats over toxic waste fires. Only three people can save humanity: a foul-mouthed social dropout, a pathologically cheerful religious fanatic, and a Cyber-Babe with a past. It’s a radio serial, live on stage, with the audience as sound-effects artists. It’s Radio Gomorrah LIVE! It’s the future. Ooops.

You have two more changes to catch this one:

  • Wed, June 3 at 9:00pm
  • Fri, June 5 at 9:10pm

CFF_Edgar AllanAs I mentioned earlier this week, the buzz around The Coldharts’ EDGAR ALLAN has been strong. Saturday’s second performance was packed.

Eleven year old Edgar Allan has one goal: to be the most remarkable boy at boarding school. He has only one obstacle: Edgar Allan. A manic lullabye inspired by the childhood and short stories of Edgar Allan Poe..

I am catching their third performance this evening. All remaining performances:

  • Sun, May 31 at 4:30pm
  • Thur, June 4 at 8:40pm
  • Sat, June 6 at 7:25pm

Trailer-park tall-tales for adults that kids can enjoy too! Paul Strickland (Ain’t True and Uncle False, Papa Squat’s Store of Sorts) and Erika Kate MacDonald join forces in this off-kilter musical comedy full of funny songs, strange southern stories, shadow puppetry and more!

I’ll be in the audience tonight. TRAILERS has four performances left.
