TDW Presents INSPECTING CAROL

TDW_Inspecting Carol logo

Get your holiday cheer on with this hilarious, madcap comedy! Behind the scenes of a struggling theatre’s annual slapdash production of A Christmas Carol, rehearsals are at a standstill. Tim is no longer Tiny, Scrooge wants to do the play in Spanish (Feliz Navidad), and their funding is on hold pending an inspection. This laugh out loud spoof makes for a night at the theatre that is anything but show business as usual.  Contains mild profanity.

The show runs from December 1 through December 17, with performances on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 pm, and Sunday afternoons at 2 pm. Because of anticipated demand, there also is an extra performance on Thursday, Dec 14, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $18 if purchased in advance, $20 the day of the show. The Drama Workshop performs at The Glenmore Playhouse, 3716 Glenmore Ave in Cheviot.

Anderson Theatre’s GODSPELL Celebrates City of Cincinnati

AHS_Godspell promo2

The cast of Anderson Theatre’s production of GODSPELL includes (top) Senior Kertu Bell, Sophomore Sophia Lee, Sophomore Nathan Goodlett, Sophomore Paige Resor, Senior Megan Goodlett, (bottom) Junior Alexis Zoglio, Junior Adam Radcliffe, Senior Audrey Button, Junior Austin Bally, Sophomore Jadyn Riggs, Junior Corinne Baumann, and Sophomore Ian Baker. Photo by Jennifer Alessandrini.

November 17 is opening night for Anderson High School’s production of the 2012 revival version of GODSPELL, a Broadway classic that the Director, Hannah Linser-Wilder, has chosen to set in the middle of downtown Cincinnati. Each of the thirteen characters is associated with an iconic landmark or local hangout, including Music Hall, Findlay Market, Arnold’s Bar and Grill, and Holtman’s Donuts. This connection infuses everything about the show, from acting choices to costumes to sets to props.

Ms. Linser-Wilder, who also teaches English at AHS, explains her reasoning by saying, GODSPELL is meant to help us understand the world we live in. It is about building community. I wanted to showcase our community.”

“During table work I took the entire cast downtown,” Ms. Linser-Wilder continues. “We spent a lot of time observing and discussing how each different area of downtown has its own unique culture, how these various cultures interact with each other (or don’t), and how that contributes to the overall culture of the city.”

Sophomore Jadyn Riggs plays a character who represents the Downtown Public Library. She says, “The library brings diverse ideas and cultures into the community, and that is what I am trying to reveal throughout my character. It helps bring different people together to enjoy a common appreciation for books and opportunities.”

“The focus in Cincinnati is very exciting for me,” says Assistant Director Emily Weddle. “I grew up here. I remember Over-the-Rhine when it was not quite a welcoming place, and now to go and walk around down there, get ice cream, see a show, it is so great. We want to help the students and hopefully audiences see what an amazing city we live in.”

GODSPELL also showcases the sense of community within the Theatre Department. Ms. Weddle, who has been working as Costume Designer for Anderson Theatre for years, is pleased with the way the students are responding to the feel of the show, coming together to make it happen. “I am so proud of them,” she says.

Actor and Senior Kertu Bell says that the small size of the cast has helped build connections. She says, “The people in the cast have developed such a powerful chemistry and friendship among each other, it will be definitely clear to the audience.”

Senior and Lighting Designer Alex Carroll adds, “The show is about regular people, and how we should all treat each other. The messages are universal, delivered from the mouths of teenage actors and actress who want everyone to love and appreciate each other every day the way we love and appreciate each other on the stage.”

While GODSPELL is is a re-telling of many parables and stories from the Christian Bible, the Directors and students emphasize that it is, as Ms. Linser-Wilder says, “absolutely accessible to a religiously diverse audience. GODSPELL helps us to see that regardless of our own private beliefs, the messages in the bible are still beautiful and can help us to create a better world on earth.”

Performances are at 7:00 pm on November 17, 18, and 19. Tickets cost $10 each, and can be purchased online at www.ShowTix4U.com. For more information about the show and the full Anderson Theatre season, visit www.AndersonTheatre.com.

CCM Studio Acting Series Presents Premiere of THE EARTH IS FLAT

CCM_The Earth is Flat promoThis work by alumnus Todd Almond is a coming-of-age tale set at UC. Admission is free but reservations are required. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, Oct. 30.

CCM opens its Studio Acting Series with the premiere of Todd Almond’s THE EARTH IS FLAT at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2. Directed by CCM Acting Professor and Department Chair Richard Hess, the play runs through Saturday, Nov. 4 in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater.

THE EARTH IS FLAT follows the story of a UC freshman named Ethan and his journey to self-discovery. Set in a UC dormitory, the play explores the universal awkwardness of the American college experience. The search for identity by those least prepared with answers resonates with unexpected comedy in this new play, which was commissioned by CCM Acting as part of the Cincinnati Playwrights Conference in 2016.

“Ethan struggles to discover what it means to step into a new life far from home as he enters college, after a personal family tragedy almost derails his life,” Hess says. “This bittersweet comedy will make your heart smile.”

“This play is important to UC and CCM because it follows a student’s journey to discover truth in a world that has fallen flat,” says CCM Acting student Olivia Passafiume, who plays the role of Jennifer in THE EARTH IS FLAT. “It explores grief, and what it means to have the rug pulled from under you during some of the most formative years of your life.”

“Most importantly, Todd Almond’s words give hope that no matter what you may believe, the power of human connection is eternal,” she adds.

Almond (BM Vocal Performance, BFA Acting 1999) is a composer, performer, lyricist and playwright. He starred alongside Courtney Love in the rock opera Kansas City Choir Boy, for which he also wrote the original book, music and lyrics. His original theatrical works include Girlfriend, Melancholy Play and musical versions of The Tempest and The Winter’s Tale, among others. Since graduating, Almond has returned to CCM to hold master classes and participate in the annual Cincinnati Playwrights Conference. Dive Into London Below at Know’s New Stage Adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s NEVERWHERE

KTC_Neverwhere promoAdapted for the stage by Robert Kauzlaric
Directed by Andrew Hungerford and Daniel R. Winters

November 25 – December 17

Open the door…

Know Theatre’s landmark 20th Anniversary Season dives into the fantastical this November with a new stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s modern classic novel, Neverwhere.

Richard Mayhew is a young London businessman with a good heart and an ordinary life. That life is changed forever when he discovers Door, a young woman bleeding on the sidewalk. He stops to help her—and that act of kindness plunges him into another world.

Richard slips through the cracks in reality and lands in London Below—a world of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels that exists in a labyrinth beneath our feet.

If Richard is to ever return to his normal life, he must join the journey to save Door’s world—and find a way to survive.

Originally beginning life as a BBC serial, which Gaiman adapted into his most famous novel in 1996, Neverwhere is an internationally beloved tale of adventure, heartache, and human nature (as seen through monsters, angels, and a menagerie of sinister and saintly characters, roaming beneath our feet).

Producing Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford worked for four years to secure the rights to this modern classic. Here’s what he has to say about adapting such a beloved story fort he Know MainStage…

One of the joys of novel reading is the way in which your imagination translates the world of the text to the stage in your mind. We get to work that same magic with every show that we produce, but in the case of a grand, expansive story like Neverwhere, the challenge is especially delightful. We’re thrilled to tackle this story with a theatricality that we hope will delight and surprise the audience. Our goal is to bring this magical world to life for first time visitors to London Below, and provide a new way of seeing a favorite story for long-time Neverwhere fans. It’s going to be a wild journey!

Joining Andrew as co-director is Dan R. Winters, last seen on the Know MainStage in 2014’s Moby Dick, and making his Know directing debut in Neverwhere. A faculty member of Ohio University’s Division of Theatre and Dance, as well as Know’s resident production photographer, Daniel is no stranger to adventurous theatre, having directed the 2017 Cincinnati Fringe Festival black comedy Vapers at the Gate.

But London Below won’t be built by just two directors – joining them are a cast of local fan-favorites from both the Know’s stage and other stages around the city!

Rory Sheridan makes his MainStage debut as Richard, the unassuming London businessman whose life takes an unexpected tumble into London Below when he meets the mysterious Door, played by Ernaisja Curry. Rory comes to us fresh from his role as Cliff in Cabaret at the Incline Theatre, while Ernaisja joins us from a smash-hit stint in Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s season opener, This Random World.

Nothing is as it seems in this sinister new realm, and soon Richard finds himself pursued by the nefarious Croup and Vandemar – played by Madcap Puppets’ own Sean P. Mette and Dylan Shelton!

Richard and Door soon enlist the help of the enigmatic Marquis de Carabas, brought to vivid life by Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Jeremy Dubin*.
*Appears courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association under a Special Appearance Agreement.

Joining the fight is the unpredictable (and very, very dangerous) Hunter, played by Jordan Trovillion, while Brandon Burton returns to the Know MainStage as the impressive – and secretive – Angel Islington.

And who will bring the rest of the 30+ named characters of the teeming, sordid world of London Below? The all-star team of Maggie Lou Rader, Andrew Ian Adams, and Chris Wesselman, of course!

Neil Gaiman is an international literary star, whose works span novels, novellas, YA, and comics, and have been adapted into radio, television, and film. His fan base is uniquely dedicated to the imaginative worlds he creates – which is why Know is partnering with local artist Christina Wald for a gallery show in our Underground Bar. Everwhere: Art Inspired by the Works of Neil Gaiman will open on November 9 and be available to view through December 17.

Dive into Neil Gaiman’s spectacular imagination in a stage adaptation of his beloved novel, Neverwhere, starting November 25 – only at Your Theatrical Playground.
