THE BUTTERFINGERS ANGEL, MARY & JOSEPH, HEROD THE NUT & THE SLAUGHTER OF 12 HIT CAROLS IN A PEAR TREE Runs Dec. 10-12

MLT_The Buttefingers Angel promoTHE BUTTERFINGERS ANGEL, MARY & JOSEPH, HEROD THE NUT & THE SLAUGHTER OF 12 HIT CAROLS IN A PEAR TREE
Middletown Lyric Theatre
Dec. 10-12
[Middletown]

Dealing with the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus from a fresh and richly creative point of view, the author combines traditional Christmas music, and often antic characterizations. Following the Biblical recounting, the story is enhanced by a tree, a sheep and a donkey, who talk! Add a beguiling Mary who has decided that men and marriage were not for her; and a suddenly cautious Joseph who now contends that he is too old for his intended and a flustered boy-angel who directs the action from a promptbook and manages to get only the most strangled, bleating sounds from his trumpet. But, the true significance of the occasion is never lost, and the underlying mood and spirit of reverence is, if anything; enhanced and made new by the distinctive approach of this joyful and unique retelling.

The “Black Nativity” originated in 1961 and was performed Off-Broadway by Langston Hughes. The modified celebration of the birth of Jesus exhibits more than just another Christmas production. This illustrious story is filled with joyfulness as it expresses one of the Bible’s most prevailing narratives that took place in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago. The spirited performance is presented with a taste of African American flavor.  “Black Nativity” articulates not only the story of Jesus’ birth, but also the splendiferous sound of Gospel music!
