(CINCINNATI, FEB. 1, 2012)– Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati’s (ETC) production of Matthew Lopez’s The Whipping Man has earned three awards from the League of Cincinnati Theatres for its design and acting ensemble. The Civil War-era drama, winner of a 2011 Outer Critics Circle Award, is making its regional premiere at ETC.

Set during Passover in 1865, at the end of the war, the play is the story of a wounded Confederate soldier who returns from battle to find his Virginia family home in ruins, abandoned except for the presence of two former slaves, who were raised as Jews in the home. The play’s twists and turns find the three men grappling with their complicated history and with long-buried family secrets.

The cast for the show, described as “pitch perfect” by one LCT panelist, includes Jarred Baugh, Ken Early and Mark St. Cyr. “The production was a true ensemble piece with each actor supporting the other.”

ETC’s resident designer Brian c. Mehring earned two awards for his scenic and lighting work. According to one panelist, “I absolutely believed I was looking into the ruins of a Southern mansion during the Civil War. The set was solid and functional, and it set the mood as soon as the audience entered the theatre.”

The Whipping Man continues through Feb. 12. [Please note, extended through Feb. 18 -Rob] Details and ticket information are available at www.cincyetc.com.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. This bright show is about an audience watching a play. Joe Preston has not had a hit in years, and is hoping his new play will revive his career. He is at the mercy of an off Broadway audience consisting of two typical “grey haired matinee ladies”, a married couple who fight all the time, an anxious young man waiting for his date, an illiterate rock singer trying to impress his date with some culture, a Texas business man and his culture vulture wife and three critics– one of whom hates Preston’s work and another who begged his editor not to assign him to his show because Sam, his lover who recently jilted him, is in the cast. Poor Joe Preston!

Having witnessed the landing of an alien space craft some 25 years ago, Faye prepares for their return. A strange bird-like woman suddenly appears out of the darkness of Buster Swamp, setting in motion a chain of extraordinary events. Lies begin to unravel and the truth is revealed as the Sugar Bean Sisters hatch a diabolical plot to ensure the space people’s return.

Steppin’ Out (BCT’s Main Stage)

This is a rollicking comedy about the attempts of some working class amateurs to overcome their inhibitions and two left feet in a low-rent dance studio in North London. But before the dancing begins Mavis must mediate the minor dramas that erupt among this motley but loveable crew on their way to triumph at their recital.

A Chorus Line (An Edge of the Creek Production)
March 1- 10, 2013 Auditions – Jan. 7 & 8, 2013 Directed by Doug Lloyd

A Chorus Line is a stunning musical about a chorus audition for a Broadway musical. It tells of the achingly poignant ambitions of professional Broadway gypsies to land a job in a show, and is powerful metaphor for all human aspirations. Memorable musical numbers include, I Can Do That, At the Ballet, Dance: Ten; Looks: Three, One (Singular Sensation), What I did for Love) and I hope I get it. Winner of 9 Tony awards and the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama

The Canterbury Tales or Geoffrey Chaucer’s Flying Circus (Youth)
April 19 – 28, 2013 Auditions – March 5 & 6, 2013 Directed by Teresa Connair

Start with Chaucer’s literary masterpiece, toss in a good helping of Monty Python-styled humor, and you get this incredibly silly comedy. You’ll meet many of the pilgrims whose tales are most likely to be studied in high school (along with a few Thanksgiving pilgrims that ended up in the wrong play!), including the knight, the miller, the parson, the pardoner, the nun’s priest and the friar. Even the wife of Bath has cleaned up her act for this adaptation and is now a nagging woman who sells self-help DVDs! The miller, too, makes an appearance, though nobody wants to hear anything he has to say!

Legally Blonde The Musical (BCT’s Main Stage)
