Casting Call: Cincinnati Music Theatre Seeking African-American Performers for HAIRSPRAY

CINCINNATI, OH –  Cincinnati Music Theatre  is looking for additional African American performers for their Fall Production of  HAIRSPRAY: The Broadway Musical.

Available roles include:

MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE – The big, brassy, all-embracing black radio DJ and once-a-month guest host on Corny’s tv show; she wears blonde wigs as her trademark.  Approaching forty years old, she is a strong r & b / gospel singer. (Role played by Queen Latifah in the film version.)

LITTLE INEZ – Motormouth’s daughter, age 10 to 12. She’s cute but angry, impatient for the promised land of actual civil rights. Strong dancer.

DYNAMITE #1 – One of a trio of ultra-glamorous  “Diana Ross/Supremes”-like” black divas who emerge from a poster to be the magical hostesses of Tracy and Edna’s whirlwind visit to the emerging Swinging Sixties

DUANE – A Patterson Park High School student.  A strong singer/dancer.

Auditions for these roles will be held on Monday, August 1, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Clifton United Methodist Church, 3416 Clifton Avenue, just north of the intersection of Clifton and Ludlow.

Auditions are by appointment. Walk-ins will be seen in the first available slot.

Appointments may be made by contacting Kevin Burton at (513) 702-4002 or Kevin_burton@me.com

Those auditioning are asked to provide a current resume and headshot and to prepare 32 bars of either a Broadway song or a 60’s pop song that best shows your vocal range.  Accompaniment will be provided. (Please, no cd’s, tapes or a capella numbers.). Please provide sheet music in the proper key, with cuts marked.

A basic dance audition will be a part of the audition. Please wear shoes and clothing appropriate for a dance audition.

HAIRSPRAY: The Broadway Musical welcomes audiences to Baltimore in the 60’s, where the 50’s are out and change is in the air.  Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Now this larger-than-life adolescent must use her newfound power  to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, integrate Corny’s television show, and find true love  -all while singing and dancing and without denting her ‘do.  A complete synopsis is available at www.cincinnatimusictheatre.org

This production is being produced by Kathy Beiting and directed by Skip Fenker, with musical direction by Kendra Struthers and choreography by Brian Anderson. Rehearsals for this production will begin in late August, 2011 with performances beginning November 4 and running through November 12 at the Jarson-Kaplan Theater, Aronoff Center
