THE DROWNING GIRLS

Liberty Exhibition Hall [Northside]

Directed by Bridget Leak

Cast: Mindy Heithaus, Eileen Earnest & Carol Brammer

Bessie, Alice and Margaret have two things in common: they are married to George Joseph Smith, and they are dead.  Surfacing from the bathtubs they were drowned in, the three breathless brides gather evidence against their womanizing, murderous husband by reliving the shocking events leading up to their deaths.  Reflecting on the misconceptions of love, married life, and the not-so-happily ever after, The Drowning Girls is both a breathtaking fantasia and a social critique, full of rich images, a myriad of characters, and lyrical language.

Synopsis: CHAMPAGNE GODSs by Emily Dendinger
Holly has made the greatest archeological discovery of the 21st century—an oracle of the god Apollo that shows you the person you’re meant to spend your life with. However, when Holly decides that there’s more to life than archeology, her colleague Will takes it upon himself to change her mind. Set among the marble halls of the British Museum on the night of a New Years Eve gala, chaos ensues as love turns everything topsy turvy. A throwback to the screwball comedies of the 1940s, CHAMPAGNE GODS is a romantic romp about fate, farce and fidelity.

THE DROWNING GIRLS Quick Review

THE DROWNING GIRLS presented The Clifton Players through Nov. 11. I attended the opening night performance.

CPT_The Drowning Girls promo

Mindy Heithaus, Eileen Earnest & Carol Brammer.

Clifton Players open their new space, the Liberty Exhibition Hall, with a haunting production of THE DROWNING GIRLS.

Local favorites Mindy Heithaus, Eileen Earnest, and Carol Brammer excel in the production; both as an ensemble and in their strongest individual performances to date.

Director Bridget Leak continues to impress with her inventive staging and clear vision for the engaging script.

My rating: 5 out of 5.
