ENCORE, ENCORE
Presented by Northern Kentucky University as part of the Y.E.S. Festival
April 16-25
Highland Heights

Directed by Ed Cohen

Cast: Victoria Hawley as Dorothy Parker, Hunter Henrickson as Edwin Pond Parker II, Connor Moulton as Robert Benchley, Andrew Wiemann as Robert Sherwood, Chandler Taylor as Frank Crowinshield, Melissa Cathcart as Other Women &.Andy Burns as Other Men

A bittersweet tragicomedy about the legendary wit and caustic critic, Dorothy Parker. ENCORE, ENCORE traces Parker’s turbulent marriage and the pain it caused through to the meteoric rise of her career as a drama critic. Her fight comes at a price, positioning Dorothy to live in public denial of her painful personal life and stapling her inexorably to a witty, unabashed public persona that is not allowed the luxury of emotion. The play paints a deeply vulnerable portrait of a woman forced to live her life in the spotlight.

Renowned Theatre Designer Jean Guy Lecat to Speak at NKU

Jean Guy Lecat.

Jean Guy Lecat.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Internationally famed technical director, theatrical space designer and scenographer Jean Guy Lecat will give a presentation of his work at Northern Kentucky University, March 23 at 10am.

The presentation, hosted by the Department of Theatre and Dance, is free and open to the public. Lecat will speak in NKU’s Corbett Theatre, located in the Fine Arts Center at 100 Nunn Drive. Visitors should park in the Visitor Center Parking Garage or the Kenton Garage.

Dubbed “Monsieur Space” by famed theatre director (and longtime collaborator) Peter Brook, Lecat has been, over a nearly fifty-year career, a critical contributor to the development of the avant-garde stage.

Lecat worked with Brook from 1976 to 2000 as technical director and space designer, charged particularly with research, transformation or creation of more than 200 spaces throughout the world. He left Peter Brook Company in 2000, and continued to take part in the creation or transformation of spaces at the side of directors and architects. Concurrently he began to share his experiments and discoveries by offering workshops about space around the world, for young professionals or students, theatre makers, architects, artists, set and lighting designers. He is also working on a project to create a “Theatre School of Techniques and Spaces” in Lisbon and Moscow.

Noted theatre writer Randy Gener (American Theatre, The Village Voice) characterized Lecat as “untiring in his exploration of the interaction of theater and architecture, design and performance, space and storytelling.”

NKU_logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – The Department of Theatre and Dance at Northern Kentucky University is proud to announce its 2015-2016 Academic Season.

MOON OVER BUFFALO
By Ken Ludwig
September 24 – October 4, 2015 | NKU Corbett Theatre

George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950’s, are on a tour through Buffalo, New York, playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in rep. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his next big feature. Unfortunately for our leading players, everything that could go wrong does go wrong—including hilarious uncertainty about which play they’re actually performing. Will the pair pull themselves together in order to give the performance of their lives?

THE WINTER’S TALE
By William Shakespeare
October 20 – 25, 2015 | NKU Robert and Rosemary Stauss Theatre

Tragic, romantic, hilarious, and uplifting, this genre-bending masterpiece is one of Shakespeare’s most elegant and haunting plays. THE WINTER’S TALE leaps from darkest tragedy to lighthearted romance and a truly magical conclusion. This enchanting classic celebrates redemption, reconciliation, and the mending of broken hearts. Princes and princesses, disguised identities, jealous kings, oracles, pickpockets, and one ravenous bear—if you haven’t seen THE WINTER’S TALE before, don’t miss this opportunity!

SEUSSICAL
By Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty
November 12 – 22, 2015 | NKU Corbett Theatre

Bring your whole family to see the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss come to life on our stage this November. The Cat in the Hat is our host and emcee as Seuss’ most beloved stories find themselves intertwined in an epic adventure, in which the power of imagination and the most miraculous “think” ever save the day! The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. SEUSSICAL is fun for the whole family — It’s Dr. Seuss like you’ve never seen him before!

ONCE IN A LIFETIME
By George S. Kaufman Moss Hart
February 18 – 28, 2016 | NKU Corbett Theatre

The first of many collaborations between the legendary writing duo, Kaufman and Hart’s ONCE IN A LIFETIME is a laugh-out-loud extravaganza. Indulge in this wickedly funny tale of three on-the-skids vaudeville troupers—Jerry, Mae, and George—who decide to take advantage of the latest craze, “talkies,” by heading to Hollywood and posing as voice experts. There they find absurd silent-film starlets, insane movie studio executives, crazy gossip columnists, desperate cigarette girls, dim witted stage mothers, and jaded studio hands. This delectable sendup of the excesses of Hollywood will keep you on the edge your seat through every hilarious twist and turn.

PYGMALION
By George Bernard Shaw
March 29 – April 3, 2016 | NKU Robert and Rosemary Stauss Theatre

PYGMALION—written over a century ago—continues to provide hilarious entertainment and sharp social commentary that resonates today. A chance encounter between Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, and Henry Higgins, a world expert on speech, inspires a bet that he can transform her into a lady. As Higgins strives to do the impossible, Shaw employs his trademark wit to examine issues of class and independence. Later adapted into the hit musical My Fair Lady, Shaw’s original tale is not one of romance, but of transformation and self-identity.

INTO THE WOODS
By Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine
April 21 – May 1, 2016 | NKU Corbett Theatre

In this timeless musical, your favorite fairytales are flipped upside down… and given a hefty dose of reality to boot. You might think you know the real stories of Little Red, Cinderella, Jack, and Rapunzel, but when a Baker and his wife learn of the curse placed upon their house by the witch next door, their quest to break the spell will cause fairytales to collide. As expected, wishes are granted and dreams come true, but in this modern classic, ‘happily ever after’ is not always what it seems: wishes have consequences, princes have flaws, and giants seek revenge.

MUD NOSTALGIA Runs March 26-28

NKU_Mud Nostagia logoMUD NOSTALGIA
Presented by Northern Kentucky University
March 26-28
Highland Heights

Directed by Bruce Hermann

Performed by Sue Ott Rowlands

Professional actress, Sue Ott Rowlands, explores the rich tradition of the Appalachian region of the United States through the unique spiritual traditions of the mountain holiness religions, specifically the serpent-handling churches. Blending music, movement, and narrative, Ott Rowlands brings to life the story of a young holiness woman struggling to understand her life and her faith in light of a devastating act of betrayal. Having barely survived staggering abuse at the hands of her husband, she desperately seeks understanding – her own and ours. Handling snakes, she explains, is “one half faith in the Holy Spirit and one half faith in modern doctors.” Combining humor, traditional Appalachian music, and personal reflections on the nature of life and love, Mud Nostalgia offers a touching glimpse of the beauty of the spiritual faith and the tenacity of the human spirit.
