NKU SOTA Streams Musical Journey FUGITIVE SONGS

NKU_Fugitive Songs logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts continues its streaming production season with “Fugitive Songs” by award-winning writers Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen. “Fugitive Songs” will be available on-demand through ShowTix4U May 6-9, 2021.

“Living through a pandemic and watching the world search for ways to move forward, I felt that producing a song cycle about people feeling trapped and isolated, then searching and finding ways to break free really speaks to the current climate,” said director Jamey Strawn. “The pandemic has caused so much self-evaluation, the pressures of each day becoming too much and forcing the urge to escape it all by running away. Fugitive Songs speaks to our hearts, showcasing those who find themselves on the run, sorting through their emotional baggage and navigating their way through a restless America.”

  • What: FUGITIVE SONGS by Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen
  • When: May 6-9,2021
  • Where: Online at ShowTix4U
  • Admission: $4 for On-Demand 48-hour rental

“Fugitive Songs” consists of 19 songs and takes the viewer on a journey across America in the form of a song cycle. The writers describe the show as “part musical, part hootenanny,” blending traditional folk music with contemporary pop and gospel. The overarching theme in the show is the urge to run away.

The NKU cast features Ethan Baker, Jackson Hurt, Je’Shaun Jackson, Blair Lamb, Ellie O’Hara, Danielle Ullman with Maiya Caldwell and Judah Stevens. Norse Media and Chris Strobel graciously provided filming and editing support during the production process.

  • When: Now through June 30, 2021
  • Where: Online at ShowTix4U

“Falling and Loving” is written in the form of poetry and does not follow a traditional plot, as it resembles a modern art piece. The production consists of a collection of monologues and duet scenes which explore the themes of falling into and out of love. The play depicts the beauty and ugliness of life through various, relatable life situations. There are very sweet moments and very ugly moments in this show.

The NKU cast features Gabby Barbosa, Courtney Blythe, Shelby Flynn, Anna Grace Rose, Ariana Catalano, Mo Cox, Mae Miller, Erin Caudill, Art Patrick, Jason Coffenberry, Raven Hughley, Justin Huddilston, Trey Finkenstead, Chris Monell, Nick Palazzolo, and Thomas Smith. Norse Media and Chris Strobel graciously provided filming and editing support during the production process.

Creating theatre at a university under COVID restrictions brought many challenges and required a production team willing to think outside the box and develop creative solutions in a completely fluid environment. This production’s primary goal was to create theatre safely while incorporating new experiences. Actors met for rehearsals one-on-one with the director, rotating rooms every 45 minutes to ensure air circulation, and everyone remained masked at all times. The show was recorded with one actor at a time, in a completely isolated and distanced environment. The entire process was in compliance with the Norse Nine guidelines.

Performers include two “on the rise” student artists and winners of the 2021 NKU Philharmonic Concerto Competition, Maddie Pittman on the violin and James Tober on the clarinet.

“As a result of this pandemic, we have been given a renewed perspective of the importance of the arts, specifically the importance of making music together and sharing live music with an audience” said Katie Barton, Director of Choral Studies. “This concert, ‘One Voice,’ is our demonstration to one another and the community that our music-making can persevere through a pandemic, and that, with one voice, we will continue to create, perform, and inspire.”

  • What: “One Voice” NKU SOTA Philharmonic Orchestra & Choirs
  • When: April 22 and 23 at 6 p.m.
  • Where: P&G Pavilion at Yeatman’s Cove (705 E Pete Rose Way, Cincinnati, OH)

“Virtual learning in a pandemic is not an excuse to stop. It’s an opportunity to get creative, do things in a new way, and to adapt. We’re dedicated to continuing music. A significant dedication was required to make opportunities work that are both safe and done with excellence” said Amy Gillingham Culligan, Director of Orchestras. “This concert is something to celebrate. It is a testament to the resilience of our students and our artform.”

As safety is a top concern, all musicians will be masked, even utilizing special custom masks for the woodwind and brass players. Audience members will be required to wear masks and all will be socially distanced both on-stage and off. These protocols are in place to ensure that this is a safe and comfortable environment for everyone. It is advised to bring your own lawn chair or blanket.
