Synopsis:
George is a man who is consumed with preserving and documenting the dying languages of far-flung cultures. Closer to home, though, language is failing him. Though he holds himself as a language expert, George simply does not have the right words to save his marriage. Mary, George’s wife, understands emotions intrinsically, but cannot find the means to explain to George what she needs, from both him and from life. Meanwhile, the unsure but devoted Emma, George’s colleague and lab assistant, cannot find a way to simply tell George that she loves him. Into this world of struggling lost souls, walks an old married couple from a remote village. A husband and wife who are the last two native speakers of an all-but-forgotten language. This couple brings the wisdom and the knowledge of how to truly express love. Helping the other three to know what is truly important in each of their own hearts.

In Julia Cho’s The Language Archive, we are treated to a poetic, quirky, and tender world. A world, very much like our own, where even when people do share a common language, their true purpose is often lost as each person speaks their own unique dialect when it comes to the language of love.

Available roles:

  • GEORGE (male presenting, 30s or 40s)
An expert linguist specializing in dying languages; husband of Mary and colleague of Emma. He is very learned and practical but is not able to communicate with his wife.
  • EMMA (female presenting, 20s or 30s)
A colleague and lab assistant to George (whom she is deeply in love with). She is smart, uncertain, genuine, and devoted. Emma is pushing herself to learn who she is, what she wants, and how to find her place in the world.
  • MARY (female presenting, 30s or 40s)
George’s wife. She’s a woman without an anchor or direction in the world, struggling to follow her dreams and heart. She leaves George and begins a new life.
  • ALTA (an old woman)
One of the last two speakers of the dying language Elloway and wife of Resten. The actor playing Alta will also play the language instructor, a passerby, and a train conductor.
  • RESTEN (an old man)
One of the last two speakers of the dying language Elloway and husband of Alta. The actor playing Resten will also play the driver, a passerby, the Old Man/Baker, and Zamenhof.
