DTG Announces Auditions for ISN’T IT ROMANTIC?

DTGIsn’t it Romantic?
by Wendy Wasserstein

Directed by Marcia Nowik

Audition Dates: October 6 & 7, 2014 – 7:00 pm

Production Dates: Nov 21- Dec 7, 2014

It’s the late 1970’s New York where women share their thoughts and desires with each other and press on to Have It All as they end their twenties. Job? Boyfriend? Husband? Children? And what to do about meddling parents and friends? Enjoy the holiday season with this delightful comedy.

This is the story of two 28ish year old childhood friends coming into their own in 1983 New York City. It is the story of Mothers and Daughters, of letting go and of embracing one’s individuality.

“The play deals with the post-college careers (and dilemmas) of two former classmates, a short, slightly plump would-be writer named Janie Blumberg, and her tall, thin gorgeous WASP friend, Harriet Cornwall. Both are struggling to escape from lingering parental domination and to establish their own lives and identities. In Janie’s case this leads to an inconclusive involvement with a young Jewish doctor who calls her ‘Monkey’; while Harriet assails the world of big business and has an affair with her hard-driving (and married) boss. Told in a fast-moving series of inventive, alternately hilarious and touchingly revealing scenes, the play explores their parallel stories with uncommon wit and wisdom—resulting, ultimately, in a heightened awareness which, while not providing all the answers, goes a long way toward achieving the maturity and self-assuredness that both protagonists so desperately desire.” – Dramatists Play Service

Casting Requirements:

  • JAMIE BLUMBERG – a 28ish Jewish American Princess, down to earth, has learned to hide behind clownish wit and self effacement, traits she now struggles to overcome. Tap Dancing a plus.
  • HARRIET CORNWALL – the well put together stylish Madison Avenue upwardly mobile WASP childhood friend of Jamie, also struggles to “have it all”.
  • MARTY STERLING – the Jewish mother’s dream of a very successful and sweet Jewish doctor, has momentary charm under his clueless condescension (calls Jamie “Monkey”).
  • TASHA BLUMBERG – Jamie’s non-traditional Jewish mother with traditional values, a free spirit who smothers her daughter.
  • SIMON BLUMBERG – Jamie’s endearing and devoted father.
  • LILLIAN CORNWAll – Harriet’s mother, a self-willed powerful business tycoon, divorced, lives alone, a feminist before it was acceptable.
  • PAUL STUART- a married, hard working high level executive, sincere male chauvinist serial philanderer, always just on the brink of leaving his wife, Harriet’s boyfriend.
  • VLADIMIR – a newly immigrated Russian filmmaker, now taxi driver, obvious heavy accent.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. A resume and headshot are not required but are welcome.
