The Brink Theatre Company Announces World Premiere Production of SA’IDAH

CFF_Sa'idah_1x1A SYRIAN CHILD REFUGEE IS ADOPTED
BY WHITE A-LIST CELEBRITY COUPLE

WRITTEN BY JENNIFER HOYT-TIDWELL
DIRECTED BY CARA E. HINH

Play to Premiere at Cincinnati Fringe Festival in June 2017

Cincinnati, OH – The Brink Theatre Company presents the world premiere of SA’IDAH, an observation of America’s celebrity obsessed culture, the paparazzi uprising and the growing distorted approach to modern philanthropy at the 14th annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Directed by The Brink Theatre’s Artistic Associate CARA E. HINH and written by JENNIFER HOYT-TIDWELL, the play will feature Maya Farhat as Sa’idah, Mary O’Connell as Kirsten, Richard Buchanan as Taylor, Greg Mallios as David and Ashley Dunn as Nina.

SA’IDAH – in Arabic meaning happy, lucky or fortunate – is named after an orphaned Syrian civil war refugee who is adopted by a well-meaning Hollywood A-List couple.  The characters teeter along the intersectional space between racial injustice and the inequity of privilege. SA’IDAH is an introspective and visceral exploration into the self-disfigurement that often follows war, fame and now through the topography of social media.

Hinh – a queer, plus sized, biracial Asian American theatre director and a daughter of a Vietnamese refugee considers SA’IDAH, “not a commentary on the refugee experience, but a mirror to our apathy and our privilege as Americans,” noting, “our philanthropy is as fleeting as the posts we share and scroll past on social media.”
“Children are paying the price of war with their innocence, the conflict continues, but the news cycle has moved on,” says playwright Jennifer Hoyt-Tidwell, “as news sources become increasingly sensationalized and less reliable, it is impossible to develop a social conscience as we are being whiplashed from one tragedy and disaster to the next.”

SA’IDAH will run for five performances at OTR Community Church (1310 Race Street, Cincinnati).

THE PINK HULK: One Woman’s Journey to Find the Superhero Within @ 2017 Cincinnati Fringe Festival

CFF_The Pink Hulk_1x1

Award-winning PINK HULK One-Woman Show Written and
Performed by Valerie David “Hulking It” to the Cincy Fringe

Actor and playwright Valerie David performs her inspiring, comical one-woman show about becoming a two-time cancer survivor. What’s the first thing Valerie does when she’s diagnosed with cancer for a second time in her life? She tries to get laid. Having beaten lymphoma earlier in life, she is now diagnosed with breast cancer. And…does she succeed? Come see the show to find out! This sexy and adventurous solo show follows the triumphant journey of one woman as she finds her own “hulk-like” strength to find her superhero within! A true and inspiring story!

THE PINK HULK: One Woman’s Journey to Find the Superhero Within, written and starring professional actor and playwright Valerie David will be performed in the Cincy Fringe.

David, who has been cancer-free since 2015, wrote the autobiographical comedic drama The Pink Hulk to express the empowerment she felt being able to find humor and superhero inner strength going through two bouts of cancer—first Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and then breast cancer 15 years later. She raises money through The Pink Hulk performances for domestic and international cancer organizations.

“My show is not just about fighting cancer; it has a universal message of fighting back from any adversity in life with its inspirational message of hope and empowerment. I want to help and inspire others through my performances, and The Pink Hulk also has plenty of humor and comedy—guaranteed!” David exclaims. “I’m super excited to bring this show to the amazing Cincy Fringe, and this marks my first time taking the show to Ohio!”

“I have been honored and humbled with the impact this show has had on its audiences, whether or not they have any affiliation with cancer,” she adds. “It has been so special when people have approached me after a performance to say how much they related to The Pink Hulk.” A cancer survivor said, ‘Your show nailed exactly everything I felt when I was going through my own treatment.’ And one gentleman commented, ‘I have never known anyone to have had cancer…either friends or family, but your story had such an impact on me because it was about living life on your own terms. And that really resonated with me and made me feel empowered to do the same.’”

At its world premiere in the Planet Connections Festivity Theatre Festival in New York City this past summer, The Pink Hulk was nominated for Best Performance of a Solo Show, Best Overall Production of a Solo Show, and won Best Director of a Solo Show. It was also awarded a Congeniality Award and Planet Activist Award, raising funds and awareness for Mary’s Place by the Sea, a nonprofit cancer organization in Ocean Grove, NJ. Valerie also received the following award for The Pink Hulk by the 2017 SaraSolo Festival in Sarasota, Florida: Queen’s Medal for Valour, presented to an exceptional performer who brings bravery, grace and humor to extraordinary circumstances. And she also received The Best Survivor Award in the Pittsburgh Fringe 2017.

THE MONSTER SONGS @ 2017 Cincinnati Fringe Festival

THE MONSTER SONGS

Presented as a part of the 2017 Cincinnati Fringe Festival
A playfully macabre cabaret about zombies, mummies and stranger things

Cincinnati, OH – The Know Theatre of Cincinnati brings musical clown duo Dr. Dour & Peach’s THE MONSTER SONGS to the 14th Annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival this May 30th – June 11th. Traveling from Washington, DC, the pair presents tales of monsters great and small in a unique combination of comedic songwriting, horror movie references, and theatrical clowning.

Dr. Dour & Peach are expert ethno-crypto-zoo-musicologists. THE MONSTER SONGS is their vehicle to entertain and educate all well-meaning monster-seekers on the dangers of such ventures. Dr. Dour sings songs about monsters. And Peach helps. Together they deliver never-before-told tales of lovesick mummies, giant lizards, bargain-hunting zombies, and other hapless creatures of the night in a cabaret cocktail of original songs, peppered with vaudevillian banter. The mysterious is scrutinized. The strange is eternalized. And the dangerous is epitomized in song. Dr. Dour (vocals, 10-string touch-guitar) and Peach (cello, banjo, cute) use an array of musical stylings in this 60-minute performance. The show is for all ages and for all monsters.

THE MONSTER SONGS features husband and wife team Toby Mulford and Rachel Spicknall Mulford, the performers and co-creators of Dr. Dour & Peach. They’re based in Washington, DC, and have appeared at the Capital Fringe Festival, Clown Cabaret, ABSFest, Shenandoah Fringe, and the New York Clown Theatre Festival. 2016 marked the release of their studio album The Monster Songs, available now on CDBaby.com. This July they return to Capital Fringe in DC with their new show Love and Other Lures. http://www.drdourandpeach.com

To songwriter Toby Mulford, the horror genre is a rich mine of analogies for the human experience. The first monster songs were born when Toby watched Night of the Living Dead after a 10-hour retail shift during the holiday season. That night he dreamed of zombies devouring people, underscored by Bing Crosby’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” He hasn’t stopped writing since. From a tongue-in-cheek bossa nova about a love-sick Pharaoh to a sorrowful folk melody about ancient rituals to promote the harvest, the songs range in feeling as much as they do in style. The subjects themselves include unpredictable protagonists, some dangerous and looming, and some residing within ourselves.

The Cincinnati Fringe Festival (Cincy Fringe) is a 13-day theatre and arts festival produced by Know Theatre of Cincinnati. Live performances occur in over a dozen locations in and around the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, just north of Downtown. Every Festival features 200+ performances of over 40 productions from local, national, and international artists, each featuring unique styles or disciplines and a wide variety of subject matter. http://www.cincyfringe.com

NYC Theatre Co. Brings Indie Rock Shakespeare-Inspired Play to Cincinnati Fringe Festival

CFF_Romeo + Juliet + Anybodys

The Functional Shoes, a New York City theatre company, presents their original indie-rock Shakespeare-inspired play ROMEO + JULIET + ANYBODYS June 6-10th at the 14th annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

ROMEO + JULIET + ANYBODYS takes the tragic love story you think you know by heart and rips it a new one. At the center is Anybodys, musical theatre’s most overlooked heroine, fighting for her glimpse of the spotlight and grappling with the reality that in most stories, “you ain’t somebody, you somebody’s girl.”

ROMEO + JULIET + ANYBODYS received a workshop production at the Manhattan Repertory Theatre in New York City in 2016. Featuring original live music, roller-skating, and the perfect white dress, this 50 minute mosh-pit-play is one show you won’t want to miss at the Cincy Fringe Fest.

Fun fact: The playwright is a native Ohioan and alum of The Ohio State University. Nearly a decade ago, she played Anybodys in her high school’s production of West Side Story. Now she returns to finally give this tomboy her say.

ROMEO + JULIET + ANYBODYS is performing at the Know Theatre for the Cincinnati Fringe Festival on June 6th at 8:30pm, June 8th at 6:30pm, and June 10th at 7pm. Tickets are available at: www.cincyfringe.com

FloatBrilliance explores honest physicality, how we embody fulfillment, and sense being whole. The immersive evening length work examines fulfilling space physically, visually, and sonically while investigating the blurring of roles between movers, composers, and video artists. Dancers explore when movement is exhaustive, thorough, and fulfilled. Movement vignettes reveal refined spatial relationships, anticipatory response, and sensory feedback through touch and aural elements. The performers rely on one another to fulfill choreographic sequences while creating a playful, organic community amongst movers. Physical partnerships are built from playful shifts of time and weight and explore the sensations of tossing, diving, and catching to physicalize gravity’s stabilizing/mobilizing effects on the body.

The overall work looks at the spectrum of physical states that exists in response to fulfilling a role, existence within a synergetic partnership, and physicalizing honest movement. Movers combine in duet, trio, and quartet sequences to explore timelessness, a soft sternum and heart, and quirky gestural conversations between bodies. For the musical element of the project, dropshift engaged composerperformers Elliot Cless and Luke Gullickson to undergo a longitudinal collaboration with each other and the company. The resulting music is a dynamic tapestry of folk-inspired acoustic instrumentals, lo-fi electronica, and environmental sounds that place the artwork within its own germination. Musical ideas return, develop, and unfold in response to the subtle individuality of gesture that courses through dropshift’s movement.

FloatBrilliance’s collaborative team includes artistic architect and director of dropshift dance, Andrea Cerniglia, composers Elliot Cless and Luke Gullickson, designer Collin Bunting, and lighting designer Richard Norwood.

dropshift dance (DSD) is a provocative, inquisitive and authoritative investigator of movement. Conceived through a collaborative incubation laboratory of movement, sound, and visual installation, the work engages audience with dialogue, choice and experimental practice. DSD works through a rigorous process of studio investigation to create work that energizes the space and creates an alternate world for the performer and viewer. dropshift was founded in 2009 by Chicago based artist Andrea Cerniglia as a movement project dedicated to a collaborative and investigative studio practice and pushing boundaries of the art form in performance. The company mines abstract concepts that dissect societal structure, dynamics, and events that surround and impact us. Collaboration extends beyond dance into the realm of film, visual art and installation piece, and musical composition. This multi-disciplinary approach engages audience in a visual, aural, and human experience in order to move audience towards a transformative experience.
