Checkmates opened in 1988 featuring Ruby Dee, Paul Winfield and Denzel Washington. An original relationship story that reveals the highs and lows of two African-American couples, one older and more traditional, the other younger and upwardly mobile, sharing a two-family home in Detroit in this Ron Milner comedy.
