Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey who initially thinks that family is merely something to be tolerated. His parents retired to Florida, but that doesn’t mean his family isn’t still in Jersey. In fact, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. This is routine until he has to tell them that he has been offered a dream job (marketing executive) which would take him away from his beloved, but annoying grandparents. The news does not sit well. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. How could he betray his family’s love to move to Seattle for a job? Well, Frank, Aida, Nunzio and Emma do their level best, and that includes bringing to dinner the lovely and single, Caitlin as bait!

FIRST BAPTIST OF IVY GAP Runs Sept. 12-22

BVCT_logoFIRST BAPTIST OF IVY GAP
Presented by Brookville Community Theatre
Sept. 12-22
Brookville

Directed by Scott Coon

Cast: Anne Kirkland as Luby, Kendra Bell as Olene, Jessica Wells as Mae Ellen, Joyce Schick as Edith, Gracie Jimison as Sammy & Kathy DeVoark as Vera

During WWII, six women gather at the church to roll bandages and plan the church’s 75th anniversary. Overseeing things is Edith, the pastor’s wise-cracking wife who dispenses Red Cross smocks and witty repartee to Luby, whose son is fighting in the Pacific; Mae Ellen, the church’s rebellious organist who wants to quit but hasn’t the courage; Olene, who dreams of a career in Hollywood; Sammy, a shy newcomer with a secret; and Vera, an influential Baptist with a secret of her own. When Luby learns her son has been wounded, she confounds the others by blaming the vulnerable Sammy. Twenty-five years later, our “First Baptist Six” reunite. Back to reconcile with Luby – whose son died of his wounds – is Sammy, whose own son is now in Vietnam; and Olene, whose flashy show business career will set the town on its ear. There to welcome them are Vera, her secret still safe; Mae Ellen, still rebellious and still looking for an escape; and Edith, whose biggest challenge isn’t the church’s upcoming centennial but revelations that shake relationships formed over a quarter of a century. With humor and sadness, these six very different women find comfort, forgiveness and redemption in each other.

NOISES OFF runs Sept. 6-16

NOISES OFF
Presented by Brookville Community Theatre
Sept. 6-16
Brookville

Directed by James Nelson

Cast: Sherri Sutter as Dotty Otley, Caleb Schneider as Garry Lejeune, Scott Knisely as Frederick Fellowes, John Ray as Lloyd Dallas, Kelli Locker as Poppy Norton-Taylor, Michael Robinson as as Selsdon Mowbray, Jene Rebbin Shaw, Susan Robert as Belinda Blair & Cory Limbert as Tim Allgood

The story concerns a ragtag theater company trying to rehearse and perform a production of a fictional play called “Nothing On.” Nothing is on with this bumbling bunch of thespians as they fumble over cues, lines, and each other during their final dress rehearsal and two “public” performances. All of the familiar backstage and onstage stereotypes are on hand – the experienced yet forgetful television actress Dotty Otley, the easily angered actor Garry Lejeune, the self-conscious actor Frederick Fellowes, the hapless director Lloyd Dallas, the emotional assistant stage manager Poppy Norton-Taylor – and a few other stereotypes are thrown into the mix for extra spice: the elderly drunk Selsdon Mowbray, the ditzy blonde Brooke Ashton; the sickeningly cheerful peacemaker Belinda Blair and the overwhelmed stage manager/handyman Tim Allgood. All of these personalities collide to create a wonderfully entertaining send-up of theatre and life.
