A Viral Revival of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES and a Full 2021-22 Season

CINCINNATI, OH – August 12, 2021 — The Sunset Players, a West Side community theater group, is raising its curtain Friday, August 20th with a special two-weekend revival of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES. This viral revival completes the run of this multiple award winning (24 Association of Community Theatre (ACT) awards to be exact) production, and sets the stage for a full season of productions for 2021-22, the groups 41st season.

“The Sunset Players are thrilled to resume live theater from our home at the Arts Center at Dunham,” said John Wesseling, president and long-time member of Sunset Players. “We’re bringing the band back together for a third, and final, time in August with a special run of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES. We thought that this was difficult after 20 years between the 2001 and 2020 productions. Then the pandemic hit, cast members moved many states away, and our facility has been shuttered for the better part of the past year. I was amazed at the willingness and the sacrifices of the cast members to pull this back together for a final 6 performance run.”

PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES by John Foley, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel and Jim Wann and produced by special arrangements from Samuel French, is a high-octane trip down Highway 57 in Grand Ole Opry country with the Pump Boys at the garage and the Dinettes at the Double Cupp diner next door. Directed by Don Frimming, this fun, toe-tapping musical offers an array of country and western songs on guitars, piano, bass and kitchen utensils. This production promises a brief, yet overdue, vacation from the challenges encountered since it’s premature pandemic related closing in March 2020. Performances are August 20, 21, 22, 26, 27 and 28. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm; Sunday Matinee at 3pm and Thursday performance at 7:30pm.

The 2021-2022 season opens with:

LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR by Neil Simon. Directed by John Wesseling and produced by special arrangements from Samuel French, this play focuses on the star and writing staff of a weekly comedy-variety show circa 1953 and the writing, fighting and wacky antics that ensue in the writers’ room. Based upon Mr. Simon’s days writing for Sid Caesar along with Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, and Woody Allen, performances are October 15, 16, 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30.

The kids and those young at heart can watch ALICE IN WONDERLAND come to life as a group of performers seeks out Alice to provide “her turn” in Wonderland. As her adventure unfolds, Alice encounters many unforgettable characters. Based on the Lewis Carroll classic, this piece was dramatized by William Glennon, and is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois. Performances are December 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12. Friday performances are at 7:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm.

The winter season will warm up with DRINKING HABITS, a farce by Tom Smith. Directed by Dan Hawkins and produced by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc., two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing are secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open. When two reporters and former fiancées go undercover to investigate, accusations, mistaken identities, and romances ensue in this laugh-out-loud farce. Performances are February 18, 19, 25, 26, 27 and March 3, 4 and 5.

The season wraps with the audience lining up to see the musical TWO BY TWO with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and book by Peter Stone. Based on the play The Flowering Peach by Clifford Odets and produced by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals, Dennis Murphy will direct this inspirational and hilarious retelling of the Biblical story of Noah. It seems that the building of the ark was only the first of Noah’s many challenges. Being chosen by God isn’t always smooth sailing. Performances are May 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20 and 21.

Cincinnati State’s Interpreter Training Program will provide sign language interpreting for the deaf community on the second Saturday performance for the regular season.

Tickets for PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES and the 2021-2022 season series are on sale now and can be purchased online at the Sunset Players website (www.sunsetplayers.org) or at the door, as permitted by pandemic restrictions for indoor performances. About the Arts Center at Dunham
We’ve been busy improving the audience experience in our facility while shuttered. Courtesy of a grant from the Hamilton County CARES Relief Program for assistance to arts and cultural organizations, the Arts Center has installed viral mitigation equipment within our HVAC systems and obtained an emist electrostatic disinfection system to clean the theater before/after each performance. The theater will also follow all local, state and federal requirements related to COVID for the health and safety of our patrons, volunteers and actors.

Sound systems have been enhanced, and an assistive listening system added to enhance the experience of our hearing impaired guests, courtesy of a generous Small Arts Organizations Award from Summerfair. Finally, The Sunset Players are a recipient of an ArtsWave Catalyzing Impact Grant which will be used to fund the 2021-22 Arts Center at Dunham FREE Family Fun Series. This is a matching grant, so attendance and support of The Sunset Players and the Arts Center at Dunham will help fully fund this opportunity for all to experience the incredible creative and performing arts that Cincinnati has to offer.

About The Sunset Players
The Sunset Players, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was founded in 1979 as a community theatre group with the mission of bringing a quality, affordable theatre experience to the Greater Cincinnati region. The group performs at the Arts Center at Dunham and has produced more than 148 shows since founded. Winner of hundreds of awards from the Association of Community Theatre (ACT) of Cincinnati, its mission was significantly expanded in 2012 with the lease of the historic Dunham Arts Building via the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, to save it from probable demolition. Located in the heart of the Tri-State area, the historic West Side of Cincinnati, the mission of the Arts Center at Dunham, established as a dba of The Sunset Players in 2012 for management of the facility, is to make community adventures in the arts available and affordable for the entire Greater Cincinnati Region. Via low-cost studio rental for local artists, and quality family friendly programming, often free, we believe the arts have the power to bring communities together.

MONGREL From the Know Theatre Opens August 26

KTC_Mongrel logoFace off against a legend in:

MONGREL
by Adam Tran

August 26 – September 14, 2021

The Great Khan requests an audience.

The world is more vast than we imagine. Know Theatre invites you on a journey back through time with Mongrel, by Adam Tran, a site-specific immersive world premiere experience. Step directly into the inner circle of the Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, where we draw back the curtain on one of the greatest figures of military history … if you’ve got the courage to face him.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Mongols swept across the world, led by a charismatic and powerful leader, crushing all resistance in their path, folding the conquered peoples into their empire. Now you, the audience, with your town under siege, have the opportunity to plead your case before the Khan himself.  But first you’ll need some advice from the Khan’s most trusted adviser.

After the success of All’s Faire, the touring musical that opened our MainStage season, we’re once again returning to the great outdoors. Mongrel will take place around a campfire at a park location in the Cincinnati area. Stay tuned for more information on that: we aren’t quite ready to announce our venue yet, but we will be very soon!

Mongrel is written and performed by Indianapolis-based actor/playwright Adam Tran. Adam is a familiar face to regular Know-goers after appearing in the 2018 ghost story musical Whisper House as the Japanese-American lighthouse worker Yasuhiro, and the 2019 mixed-martial-arts drama Girl in the Red Corner as Warren, a man struggling to keep his family together.

Mongrel will be directed by Rebecca Wear; we’re delighted to welcome her to her Know directing debut with this production. Rebecca has previously directed at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Public, and Arena Stage; and she is a resident director at Hero Theatre in Los Angeles. Mongrel will also feature new original music by Alex Williamson and two-time Grammy winner Christopher Tin.

Mongrel is the second show in our twenty-fourth MainStage season, themed as “Myth-Breakers and Story-Makers.” Producing Artistic Director Andrew J. Hungerford had this to say about the show: “The road of a new play from conception to production can be a marathon, particularly when a pandemic interrupts! After two years of working with Adam to develop this show, I am thrilled that we get to bring Mongrel to audiences with such a brilliant creative team, in a uniquely theatrical environment.”

If you know there’s more to history than what you were taught, or if you’re longing for a close encounter with a legend, join us this month for Mongrel. See what happens when a little boy refuses to be bound by the destiny of his birth – and instead builds himself an empire. Are you brave enough to face the Khan?

Tickets are available on our website, knowtheatre.com, or by calling our box office at 513-300-5669.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Announces 2021-2022 Otto M. Budig Family Foundation Season

ETC_logo(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC), the region’s premiere theatre, is delighted to reopen its doors for a five-show 2021-2022 Season, reprising its production of the 2018 Obie Award-winning play Pipeline by Dominique Morisseau. Having played a few performances to rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, the show was abruptly suspended the day after it opened in March of 2020 in response to COVID-19. In addition to Pipeline, ETC will present the following productions that embrace the spirit of social consciousness for which the organization is known: Cinderella, Queen, a double bill of I Shall Not Be Moved and Your Negro Tour Guide, and Tiny Beautiful Things. Season sponsor is the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation.

“Diverse, inclusive, and fascinating. That’s how I would describe our 2021-2022 Season,” explains Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “It’s about triumph over trauma, which we are all experiencing in one way or another. I chose stories that really, genuinely matter and celebrate the tenacity we’ve all had to show to reopen. The most import thing for us was to reopen with Pipeline. The integrity of that show and the crucial need for that show today in our society demands itself on stage.”

About the Plays
The work of  the acclaimed MacArthur “Genius” Grant playwright Dominique Morisseau (Detroit ’67, Skeleton Crew) returns to the stage to open Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s 2021-2022 Season with the reprising of Pipeline. Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher, is committed to her students but desperate to give her only son, Omari, opportunities they’ll never have. But when an explosive incident at his prestigious private school threatens to get him expelled, will all her efforts be lost? A compelling, must-see portrait of parenthood, education, and the experience of young black men in America, Pipeline, September 22–October 16, 2021, brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the forefront. This is the deeply moving story of a mother’s fight to give her son a future—without turning her back on the community that made him who he is. Sponsored by the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation.

For the holidays, ETC revives one of its most treasured family-friendly holiday musicals, Cinderella, with book by Joseph McDonough and music and lyrics by David Kisor, December 1–30, 2021. What do you get when you combine a nearsighted bookworm heroine, two fabulously self-absorbed stepsisters, one devilishly diva stepmother, along with a self-empowering Well-Wisher? A fun spin on the classic fairy tale that demonstrates being smart is true beauty! When the King pressures his romantically challenged son to choose a bride from hundreds of “applicants,” a cross-country tour of the kingdom ensues to reunite a missing sneaker—yes a sneaker!—with its rightful owner. Cinderella is suitable for all ages. Sponsored by the Schueler Group.

Next, ETC presents the new play that’s created quite a buzz, Queen by award-winning playwright Madhuri Shekar, January 26–February 26, 2022. PhD candidates Sanam and Ariel have spent the better part of the last decade exhaustively researching vanishing bee populations across the globe. Just as these close friends are about to publish a career-defining paper, Sanam stumbles upon an error in their calculations, which could cause catastrophic damage to their reputations, careers, and friendship. Now, Sanam is confronted with an impossible choice: look the other way or stand by her principles and accept the consequences?

ETC is thrilled to present two one-act productions with the newly commissioned world premiere of I Shall Not Be Moved followed by the return of Your Negro Tour Guide, playing back-to-back March 23-April 23, 2022. The riveting play I Shall Not Be Moved is by Cincinnati native and emerging young playwright Isaiah Reaves. This one-woman show thrillingly recounts the story of Reave’s grandmother, nationally recognized Civil Rights pioneer Betty Daniels Rosemond and her beautiful, horrifying, and trailblazing journey through the American South as one of the first Freedom Riders during the 1960s. Audiences far and wide will experience the internal conflicts and joys of a dark-skinned Black woman’s fearless battle for equity and equality.

The one-woman stage adaptation of Your Negro Tour Guide, which has been updated, draws heavily from columns and National Public Radio commentaries collected in Kathy Y. Wilson’s book, Your Negro Tour Guide: Truths in Black & White based on her former CityBeat column. Throwing a glaring light on misguided notions of natural black beauty, black homophobia, intra-racial bigotry, and other cultural stereotypes, this play allows us, once and for all, to laugh at every secret we’ve held against and sideways glance we’ve cast at “The Other,” whoever she happens to be.

Based on the acclaimed book by Cheryl Strayed (author of the best-selling Wild), Tiny Beautiful Things, May 18–June 18, 2022, is a funny and deeply touching exploration of resilience following the then-struggling writer as she took over the unpaid, anonymous position of an advice columnist named Sugar. At first unsure of herself, she finds a way to weave her own life experiences together to help those seeking guidance for obstacles large and small. Brilliantly adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, the Academy Award-nominated writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, this enrapturing and uplifting play surges with emotion and was described by Variety as “a theatrical hug in turbulent times.” Closing ETC’s 36th Season, Tiny Beautiful Things is about reaching out when you’re stuck, recovering when you’re broken, and finding the courage to ask the questions that are hardest to answer.

2021-2022 Season Announced with Performance Dates and Directors at Falcon Theatre

FT_logoGUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER
By Todd Kreidler
September 24-October 9, 2021
Directed by Piper N. Davis

Joanna Drayton’s unannounced early return from a Hawaii holiday causes a stir when she brings to her childhood upper-class home her new fiancé, John Prentice: a widowed, black physician. Joanna’s parents—newspaper publisher Matt Drayton and his wife art gallery owner Christina Drayton are purported liberals who have instilled in her the idea of racial equality. But to her surprise, Joanna’s parents are deeply upset that she is planning to marry a black man. The Draytons’ black maid, Tille, is just as horrified, suspecting that John is trying to “get above himself” by marrying a white woman. What was intended to be a sit-down steak dinner for two turns into a meet-the-in-laws dinner party, and during the pre-dinner period, John, Joanna and her parents have to work through their differences.

WELL
By Lisa Kron
November 19-December 4, 2021
Directed by Burgess Byrd

“This play is not about my mother and me,” begins the character of Lisa. But, of course, it is about her mother, and her mother’s extraordinary ability to heal a changing neighborhood, despite her inability to heal herself. In this “solo show with people in it,” the playwright asks the provocative question: “Do we create our own illness?” The answers become highly complicated as the play spins dangerously out of control into riotously funny and unexpected territory.

RED SPEEDO
By Lucas Hnath
January 28-February 12, 2022
Directed by Tara Williams

Ray has swum his way to the eve of the Olympic trials. If he makes the team, he’ll land a marketing deal with Speedo…a deal that means he’ll never need a real job. So when someone’s stash of performance-enhancing drugs is found in the locker room fridge, threatening the entire team’s Olympic fate, Ray has to quash a maelstrom of rumors…or risk losing everything. Red Speedo is a sharp and stylish play about swimming, survival of the fittest, and the American dream of a level playing field—or of leveling the field yourself.

SILENT SKY
By Lauren Gunderson
March 18-April 2, 2022
Directed by Bridget Leak

This true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, a time when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Social progress, like scientific progress, can be hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications; Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers believe in both, and their dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth.

SPUNK
By Zora Neale Hurston
Adapted for stage by George C. Wolfe
May 6-21, 2022
Directed by Candice Handy

Hurston’s evocative prose and Wolfe’s unique theatrical style blend to create an evening of theater that celebrates the human spirit’s ability to overcome and endure. The story glows with wit, humor, and energy and resonates with soulful music. These three tales of survival are told in the key of the blues.
