Cincinnati Opera Announces $1.3 Million Gift from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to Support the Creation of New Operas Celebrating Black Stories

Cincinnati Opera will commission three new operas from composers and librettists of color, with the first to premiere during the company’s 2025 Summer Festival

Cincinnati, Ohio—Cincinnati Opera is proud to announce that the company has been awarded a $1.3 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (“Mellon Foundation”). The gift provides key financial support for a new artistic initiative by Cincinnati Opera to commission operas that celebrate Black stories. It will also fund the continuation of Opera Fusion: New Works (OF:NW), the groundbreaking workshop program from Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) that supports the development of new operas.

With seed funding provided by the Mellon Foundation gift, Cincinnati Opera will commission three new operas from composers and/or librettists of color that focus on racially and ethnically diverse characters and narratives, with primary emphasis on Black stories. The first, scheduled to premiere during the company’s 2025 Summer Festival, will be a large-scale, grand opera for full cast and orchestra by a Black composer/librettist team that features a positive and uplifting reflection of the Black American experience. Two additional operas are currently planned to premiere during the company’s 2026 and 2027 seasons, respectively, with full details to be shared at a later date.

The initiative builds on Cincinnati Opera’s commitment to present programming that reflects the diversity of its community and our nation. The company’s 2022 Summer Festival will include two world-premiere operas from Black creators that focus on Black characters: Castor and Patience, by composer Gregory Spears with a libretto by former U.S. poet laureate Tracy K. Smith, and Fierce, by composer William Menefield and librettist Sheila Williams.

“We are deeply grateful to The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for this investment in the future of our art form,” said Evans Mirageas, The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director of Cincinnati Opera. “They have been a valued supporter of Opera Fusion: New Works since its inception, and this gift is an important endorsement of our shared focus on advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in the arts. Our industry is experiencing an urgent need to expand the narratives presented on our stages. Through conversations with our artistic partners and community members, we’ve learned that there is a particular need for new operas that center on positive Black stories. We’re thrilled to be able to provide the creative space for these inspiring voices to be heard.”

Morris Robinson, renowned opera singer and Cincinnati Opera’s artistic advisor, elaborated, “Back in 2019, while I was singing with Cincinnati Opera in Porgy and Bess, my fellow cast members and I were invited into a conversation with the company’s leadership about our hopes for opera’s future. We asked, ‘What would it take to develop more grand operas about Black people, written by Black people, that are positive and uplifting?’ It felt like a huge artistic opportunity. I’m excited about this new initiative because of what it means for people of color who’ll get to see their joys and possibilities represented on the opera stage.”

Mirageas emphasized that Cincinnati Opera is in the process of identifying creators to develop its three new works. “We’ve had several exploratory conversations and are also initiating a nationwide call for writers and composers of color to submit ideas for consideration,” he said. Inquiries may be submitted to commissions@cincinnatiopera.org.

A portion of the Mellon Foundation gift will also support the continuation of Opera Fusion: New Works, the nationally recognized partnership between Cincinnati Opera and CCM that advances the development of new operas. Under the program, co-directed by Mirageas and CCM Professor Robin Guarino, composers and librettists come together with Cincinnati Opera and CCM administrators, musicians, and artistic and production personnel to workshop their operas in progress. Since 2011, the program has produced workshops for 19 operas, and many of these works have subsequently received their world premieres on professional stages across the U.S., including Cincinnati Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and Minnesota Opera.

The current gift from the Mellon Foundation provides support for OF:NW through 2024, with the next workshop taking place in May 2022: Robeson/Moscow, a new opera about the life and work of artist and activist Paul Robeson from composer Scott Davenport Richards and librettist David Cote, the creators of Cincinnati Opera’s 2019 world-premiere opera Blind Injustice. Guarino will serve as dramaturg and director.

“Although CCM’s ties to Cincinnati Opera date back more than a century, ours is a partnership that is truly defined by the exploration of ‘what’s next,’” said Stanley E. Romanstein, the Thomas James Kelly Professor of Music and Dean at CCM. “Thanks to the generosity of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CCM and Cincinnati Opera continue to take a leading role in our respective industries through Opera Fusion: New Works. This initiative’s emphasis on the creation of new operas allows us to tell bold stories from diverse perspectives and explore themes that are vitally important to contemporary audiences, while also allowing CCM students, faculty, and staff to play an active role in the evolution of the art form. We are proud to continue this important work, and we could not ask for better partners than Cincinnati Opera and the Mellon Foundation.”

Concluded Mirageas, “CCM is an extraordinary cultural asset, and we are fortunate to have such an outstanding conservatory as our collaborator. Through our unique partnership along with the Mellon Foundation’s support, Cincinnati has become fertile ground for the development of new opera. We can’t wait to see where this next chapter leads.”

CINDERELLA Opens Tonight at Music Hall

Cincinnati Ballet Presents the Classic Fairytale, Feb. 17-27

CB_Cinderella promo2

Cincinnati, OH (February 7, 2022) –
Have a ball and fall in love with CINDERELLA February 17 – 27, 2022. CINDERELLA returns to Music Hall with choreography by Artistic Director Victoria Morgan, as we continue the celebration of her 25th and final season as the Company’s artistic leader. The modern take on the classic story includes puppetry, magic illusions, and Sergei Prokofiev’s buoyant score performed live by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Carmon DeLeone. The plucky heroine’s good deeds awaken a magical love story thanks to a little help from her Fairy Godmother. “Of course, we all know the premise of this rags-to-riches story – a humble yet plucky heroine who finds her true place in the world! While there are obstacles along the way, in the end, her dreams do come true,” said Victoria Morgan. “When I choreographed Cinderella, I was drawn to the archetypal elements of the centuries-old story — tiny mice who act as friends and confessors for our heroine, the villainous, but humorous stepsisters, and the benevolent fairy godmother. The storytelling resonates will so many of us because we recognize these characters and elements in our own lives.” Laugh out loud with the riotous Stepsisters and marvel as an ordinary pumpkin transforms onstage into a spectacular carriage. Cinderella also has some pint-sized companions – her well-known mice friends will accompany her on stage as puppets ‘danced’ by Second Company CB2 artists. Several dozen young performers from Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy will also perform in the production, making it the perfect fit for entertaining families.

Based on the 1697 story by Charles Perrault, Cinderella tells the story of young woman whose hard work and good deeds go unrecognized by her stepmother and stepsisters. She remains hopeful, despite her odds, until one day she is visited by her Fairy Godmother who magically makes her dreams come true.

All Cincinnati Ballet dancers and Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy young performers appearing in the production are fully vaccinated. Due to health and safety guidelines, performers may wear face coverings during the production.

The health and safety of our patrons, artists and staff remain Cincinnati Ballet’s top priority. All ticket holders aged 12 and above are required to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination for entry into Cincinnati Music Hall. Proof of a negative COVID test will also be accepted in lieu of proof of vaccination. The negative test can either be a PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance or an antigen test by a healthcare or pharmacy provider within 24 hours. In addition, all guests regardless of age or vaccination status are required to wear face coverings at all times while inside the venue, including while seated in performance spaces. This policy will remain in effect until further notice. Cincinnati Ballet, along with our venue partners, will continue to closely monitor the rate of Covid-19 transmission in Hamilton County and assess and adjust accordingly. Additional Covid 19-related health protocols and requirements may be in effect at the time of future events. KSO Presents THE GREATEST SHOWMEN March 5th

KSO_The Greatest Showman promoTHE GREATEST SHOWMEN
(Charlie Chaplin & P.T. Barnum)

The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra continues its 30th anniversary season under the “big top” on 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Drees Homes Auditorium (St. Henry District H.S.) in Erlanger. This circus themed program features music from two films spanning nearly 90 years from Charlie Chaplin’s silent film — The Circus (1928) —and the Hugh Jackman 2017 portrayal of P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman.

Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977), through his influences, remains one of the giant figures in the film industry. He wrote, directed, produced, edited, starred in and composed the film scores for most of his films. Chaplin co-founded United Artists distribution corporation with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith to retain complete control of their respective films and producing activities.

The Circus won Chaplin an Academy Award at the first Academy ceremony in 1929. The film was fraught with production set backs, including a storm, fire, reshoots, and Chaplin’s own very public and messy divorce. The Circus was re-released in 1969 with a new Chaplin film score, and Charlie, at age 79, singing a newly composed song — “Swing Little Girl” — appearing at the beginning of the film. It is this version the KSO will screen and accompany live.

Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) was an American showman, entrepreneur, author, politician and museum and circus owner-operator and promoter. His concepts and marketing successes were
revolutionary and set the stage for Broadway, concert touring and eventually the travelling circus dubbed “The Greatest Show on Earth.” The Hugh Jackman film musical — The Greatest Showman — loosley based on P.T. Barum and his circus was released, with music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Following the Chaplin film, the KSO will offer several production numbers from the 2017 boxoffice hit, with vocalists Michelle Wells, Christian Arias, members of St. Henry’s chamber choir and performers from Circus Mojo.

Tickets for each show remain $35 to experience great musicians, guest artists and innovative programming unique to our region. The KSO will adopt the safety protocols of each respective venue that are in place on the date of the performance. For those who need to stay home, the KSO continues live streaming each concert (with multiple cameras) for your ‘at home access’ for the price of a single ticket. Tickets are available online at kyso.org or by phone at (859) 431-6216.

“Silent Sky [is]… sheer magic.” – San Francisco Chronicle

Opening on Friday, April 1 through Saturday, April 16, 2022

(Newport, KY) — Falcon Theatre continues its 2021-2022 season with Silent Sky, from America’s most-produced living playwright Lauren Gunderson.

A celestial romance and true story of discovery, this riveting play explores the life and career of Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868-1921) as she fearlessly asserts herself in the male-dominated world of early astronomy. Hired by the Harvard Observatory as a “human computer” to catalog the stars, Henrietta’s story plays out against a landscape of early feminism and universe-revealing science, reminding us all what we can achieve when we allow curiosity and wonder into our lives. As Henrietta devotes herself to measure the light and distance of stars, she discovers that she must also take measure of her life on Earth. Silent Sky explores Henrietta’s tension in reconciling her dedication to science with her family obligations and, ultimately, the possibility of love.

Silent Sky is directed by Bridget Leak and features a five-person cast that includes Jordan Trovillion (Henrietta Leavitt), Hannah Gregory (Margaret Leavitt), Nathan Tubbs (Peter Shaw), Tara Williams (Annie Cannon) and Martha Slater (Willamina Fleming).

Performances are on April 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16, 2022. All performances are at 8:00 PM EST. Tickets prices are $25 for adults and $15 for students with ID. Patrons enjoy a $5 discount for Thursday performances. Visit falcontheater.net to reserve seats.

Health and Safety Information
Falcon Theatre is making the safety of our artists and our audience a priority and continues to follow CDC and Local Health guidelines. As previously announced, all ticket holders must wear masks and show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative COVID-19 test to attend a performance. Actors will not be masked, and seats will be sold to full capacity without social distancing. Our Covid safety policy will be continually updated on our website as safety recommendations change.
