LES MAMELLES DE TIRESIAS + MAHAGONNY SONGSPIEL
UC College-Conservatory of Music Opera Double Bill
Feb. 26-28
Cohen Family Studio Theater [University Heights]

Directed by Jose Maria Condemi
Conducted by William Langley

The juxtaposition of these two works by contemporaries Francis Poulenc and Kurt Weill highlights two major artistic movements of the first half of the 20th century — surrealism and expressionism. The texts for these compositions are taken from two poet-playwrights, each towering proponents of these styles – Guilliaume Apollinaire of surrealism and Bertolt Brecht of expressionism. Both operas offer sardonic and poignant commentaries on modern society.

THE HISTORY BOYS Runs Feb. 20-March 1

THE HISTORY BOYS
Wright State University
Feb. 20-March 1
Creative Arts Center Festival Playhouse [Dayton]

Directed by Jason Podplesky

You will meet an unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-form (senior) boys in a British boarding and their vastly different educators. In The History Boys, Alan Bennett raises—with gentle wit and pitch-perfect command of character—not only universal questions about the nature of history and how it is taught but also questions about the purpose of education today. Following a sold out run in London, The History Boys premiered on Broadway in April 2006 taking the Tony Award as Best Play of the Season.

12 ANGRY JURORS Runs Feb. 20-March 1

12 ANGRY JURORS
Oxford Area Community Theatre
Feb. 20-March 1
Oxford Community Arts Center

Originally broadcast as a television play in 1954, and written again in 1957 as a feature film, Twelve Angry Jurors is an American courtroom drama about the deliberations of a jury at a homicide trial. A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. “He doesn’t stand a chance,” mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case — until one of the jurors begins opening the others’ eyes to the facts. Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and the jurors become angry. The jurors’ final verdict and how they reach it will keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

TRANSORBITAL Runs Feb. 20-28

TRANSORBITAL
CenterStage Players
Feb. 20-28
Gabriel’s Corner [Over-the-Rhine]

Directed by Tom Peters
Produced by Fred Hunt

Cast: David Little as Dr. Walter Freeman, Parker Culp as The Kid, Phia Veshapidze as Irina, Max Cormendy as Eugene O’Dell, Lora Jost as Gertrude O’Dell, Geoffrey Simmons as Dr. Chris Williams, Wolf Singer as Doc Hollow & Hugh Staples & William Witzgall as Cops/Doctors/’The Transorbitals’

TRANSORBITAL is historical fiction that follows the exploits of superstar lobotomist Dr. Walter Freeman. With his trusty ice pick in hand and his loyal—though erratic—sidekick, The Kid, riding shotgun, Freeman drives his Lobotomobile coast to coast across post-war America, determined to save the country from its own troubled mind. With messianic fervor, an evangelist’s sense of righteousness, and a jazzman’s gift for improvisation (and showmanship), Doc Freeman is quickly gaining converts, and notoriety. All is going just well, until a number of Freeman’s former protégés start turning up dead. Creepy, grimy, and darkly humorous, Transorbital is an off-kilter twist on the old pulp whodunit.
