“Sha la la, Joseph, you’re doing fine! You and your dreamcoat, ahead of your time!” One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, eleven brothers and the coat of many colors.
Told entirely through song – The Narrator leads us through a retelling of the story of Joseph – the favorite son of Jacob – who is blessed with vivid dreams that foretell the future. Jacob buys Joseph an elegant coat of many colors, which doesn’t please his 11 brothers. After being sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. However, news of Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams travels and sparks the interest of the hilarious and troubled Elvis-like Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man. In the midst of the famine, the 11 brothers find themselves unknowingly at the mercy of the brother they betrayed. Joseph tests their integrity, and ultimately the brothers are reconciled. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is set to a multitude of musical genres, spanning from traditional musical theater to country and calypso to pop and rock n’ roll.
