May 10, 2018 – MonTra Performance is excited to announce the world premier of APHRODITE’S REFUGEES, a new theatrical performance at the 2018 Cincy Fringe Festival, May 29-June 10.
It was said that Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty, emerged from the Mediterranean sea foam onto the coastal rocks of the island of Cyprus. In addition to this mythological fame, Cyprus has a little-known, yet complex history. Wedged between Turkey, Syria and Greece, the island has been desired by ruling empires for centuries.
Animation, storytelling & live art come together In APHRODITE’S REFUGEES to paint a dreamlike picture of a young Cypriot refugees as he and his family flee from their home. All while the ancient Greek Gods play a high-stakes game of cards. Developed from interviews from Cypriot refugees, APHRODITE’S REFUGEES was created by Monica Dionysiou, featuring visual artist Aaron Young. A portion of proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders
