The Diary of Anne Frank
March 19th to March 22nd 2015 in the SCPA Corbett Theater
The School for Creative & Performing Arts, a proud Cincinnati Public School and the only K-12 Public Arts School in the U.S., proudly presents its high school drama, The Diary of Anne Frank, adapted from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, edited by Otto Frank.
This critically acclaimed play tells the story of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who went into hiding during World War II to avoid the Nazis. Together with seven others, she hid in the secret annex on the Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam. After almost two years in hiding, they were discovered and deported to concentration camps. Otto Frank, Anne’s father, was the only one of the eight people to survive the concentration camps. After her death, the diary she wrote while in hiding was published and continues to this day to move and inspire people of all ages around the world. Anne’s story is as relevant today, 70 years after her death, as it was when it was first published in 1947. Director David Roth chose the play exactly because of its continuing relevance. “The issues of religious and racial intolerance, as we all read in the news, have never been abated. Thus, The Diary of Anne Frank is as timely today as it was when first penned,” said Mr. Roth.
SCPA’s production features student actors in grades 9 through 12. Like all SCPA productions, students are also involved in the technical aspects of the show. In cooperation with the Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, educational exhibits about the Holocaust will be on display in the theater lobby during the run of the show. SCPA will host a Holocaust survivor to speak to its students and is making plans for the cast to tour the Center’s permanent exhibit Mapping Our Tears. “The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education is thrilled to be a part of this partnership with SCPA to ensure that the story of Anne Frank continues to be shared,” said Alexis Storch, Director of Educational Outreach. The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education is located at 8401 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, Ohio.
