Ensemble Theatre Cincinntai is happy to announce the final show as part of its exciting 2014-2015 Season, which already includes an impressive line up of leading contemporary titles. We will present the regional premiere of the critically acclaimed Detroit ’67 (by Dominique Morisseau), which earned rave reviews and won the 2014 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History. The first in a three-play cycle about Ms. Morisseau’s hometown, Detroit, the play explores an explosive and decisive moment in a great American city.
The jury panel for the Kennedy Prize wrote that they were “completely drawn into the world of Detroit ’67, whose compelling characters struggle with racial tension and economic instability…Detroit ’67 is a work grounded in historical understanding that also comments meaningfully on the pressing issues of our day.” A top emerging American playwright, Ms. Morisseau has been compared to August Wilson, Lorraine Hansberry, and Zora Neale Hurston.

REGIONAL PREMIERE
Detroit ’67
by Dominique Morisseau
March 18-April 5, 2015
Winner of the 2014 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History
It’s 1967 in Detroit. When their parents died, Chelle and Lank inherited their childhood home. To make ends meet the siblings host “basement parties,” spinning the newest records to come out of Motown, a risky business as police crack down on after-hours joints in black neighborhoods. Always at odds, they fight over the future of the family trade. But when a mysterious white woman finds her way into their care and a string of raids increases police brutality around the city, the siblings become divided over much more than business. Suddenly, they find themselves caught in the middle of the ’67 riots. Detroit ’67 is a tense, entertaining portrayal of the hazards of idealism at the epicenter of a riot.
