Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella are familiar stories to many people. But what about The Baker and his wife? And who is this narrator? “Into the Woods,” a musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine tells us the stories of these familiar folks.
The Baker and his wife desperately desire a child, so they ask their friendly neighbor, who happens to be a witch, for help. She agrees to help them get the thing they want the most and, in the process, the rest get what they want, too. They should all now “live happily ever after,” but do they? “ Into the Woods” explores the question, “Is getting what you want worth what it costs?”
