Set designer Chris Harmon has transformed the stage of Beavercreek Community Theatre into the ramshackle Florida swamp dwelling of “The Sugar Bean Sisters.”
The decidedly strange Nettle sisters will be plotting their escape from spinsterhood in the Sugar Bean, Florida swamp at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Fridays from Oct. 26-Nov. 4.
Willie Mae Nettles, portrayed by Terry Larson of Beavercreek, is going to Salt Lake to find a good Mormon husband while her sister, Faye Clementine, played by Monique Hobbs of Centerville, plans on hopping on a spaceship when it returns after a 25-year absence.
The Southern Gothic comedy of romance, murder and alien abduction begins with the sisters’ return to their swamp dwelling after a disastrous daytrip to Disney World, where Willie lost her prized Eva Gabor wig on Space Mountain.
Adding further lunacy to the show, a strange bird-like woman, played by Sarah Caplan of Dayton, suddenly appears out of the darkness of Buster Swamp, setting into motion a chain of extraordinary events.
Even more demented comedy is provided by Vidella Sparks, played by Jill Proudfoot of Kettering, and The Bishop Crumley, portrayed by Steve Strawser of Kettering.
While doing it with a bit of madness, playwright Nathan Sanders tells the story of family and faith.
“The Sugar Bean Sisters,” under the direction of Doug Lloyd of Dayton, is a production of BCT’s Edge of the Creek, its production arm specializing in shows for adult audiences.
Along with Harmon of Centerville, Lloyd has pulled together a strong crew featuring Hans Unser of Beavercreek as the stage manager and Kristi Lickliter of Dayton as the assistant director.
The swampy-feel of the set is enhanced by the lighting design of John Falkenbach of Dayton and the sound design of Tony Fende of Franklin.
The mother and daughter team of Stephanie Dickey of Englewood and Karen Berry of Dayton are the costumers while Rachel Jakubiak of Dayton is the producer.
Tickets are $13 for adults and $11 for students, BCT members and seniors, ages 55 and older. A group discount of $1 per ticket is available to groups of 10 or more when the tickets are purchased at the same time for the same performance.
Tickets can be reserved by calling 429-4737 and leaving a message or by emailing boxoffice@bctheatre.org. For more information, visit the theater’s Web site at http://www.bctheatre.org, where the tickets can be purchased online with a credit card.
