THE THING CALLED LOVE: A Musical Cabaret
Wilmington College Theatre
April 16-17

The cabaret highlights the theatrical and musical talents of students involved in both programs by drawing from the Great American Songbook, featuring familiar pieces by Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, the Gershwins and others. Styled as a jazzy cabaret, the band will take the spotlight as vocalists perform the music and lyrics of some of our most cherished songs about falling in love and falling out of love — and everything in between.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST Runs Feb. 26-28

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
Wilmington College
Feb. 26-28
Boyd Cultural Arts Center Heiland Theatre [Wilmington]

Directed by Bryan Wallingford

Cast: Devon Snyder as Jack Worthing, Nathyn Fulton as Algernon Moncrieff, Emma Schnecker as Gwendolyn Fairfax, Carlie McCoy as Cecily Cardew, Ollie Basta as Lady Bracknell. Makayla Thomason as Miss Prism, Teddy Murphy as Dr. Chasuble, Fiona Powell as Lane, Otto Cipollini as Merriman & Ken Lydy as Gribsby

The classic play is a satirical comedy that mocks Victorian social conventions, although some ring as true today as they did in the 19th century. The story focuses on two men, Jack and Algernon, who both create false identities to escape from their societal obligations. Two women, Gwendolyn and Cecily, have fallen for these imaginary personas, both of whom go by the name of “Ernest.” The men tell a series of lies to try to keep up their illusions, and hilarious misunderstandings ensue. Witticisms, wordplay and aphorisms are the comedic highlights of Wilde’s masterpiece.

AM I BLUE
Directed by Cherie Cooper-Darragh

Cast: Kyleigh Caves as Asheb Williams & Sterling Goodwin as John Polk Richards
Ensemble: Emma Schnecker, Teddy Murphy, Ellie Craig, Devon Snyder & Carlie McCoy

The story begins in a seedy New Orleans bar where John Polk Richards is approached by Ashbe Williams, who invites him to the littered apartment that she shares with her absent father. Ashbe introduces him into her secret fantasy life as she tries to bridge the loneliness that infuses them both. Sometimes wildly funny, sometimes gently affecting, the play is a study of two young people, both unsure and apprehensive, whose unexpected encounter becomes, for both of them, a valuable lesson in coping with life—now and in the future.

THIRD AND OAK: THE LAUDROMAT
Directed by Tara Lydy

Cast: Ellie Craig as Deedee, Makayla Thomason as Alberta & Devon Snyder as the voice of the DJ

The setting is a dreary laundromat in the middle of the night. Alberta, a rather reserved older woman, enters and begins to sort her laundry. She is soon joined by Deedee, a brash and rough-spoken young woman who, at first glance, seems to be the opposite of Alberta. As they go about their work, a conversation begins. In time Alberta confesses that her own life is not as tidy as Deedee had assumed. In the end, the two hear each other out and come to a better understanding of how to deal with the isolation and rejection that life can sometimes inflict.
