Everyone knows the story of Pearl Bryan – or do we? Surprisingly, this notorious and mysterious tale of the murder of a young woman in 1896 in Ft Thomas still manages to baffle both the casual as well as professional historian to this day, especially because her head was never found. Countless books and murder ballads about the victim, her murderers, their trial in Newport, and the people who were drawn into what was once described as “the crime of the century”, as well as theories of what became of her head, abound.
