Professional actress, Sue Ott Rowlands, explores the rich tradition of the Appalachian region of the United States through the unique spiritual traditions of the mountain holiness religions, specifically the serpent-handling churches. Blending music, movement, and narrative, Ott Rowlands brings to life the story of a young holiness woman struggling to understand her life and her faith in light of a devastating act of betrayal. Having barely survived staggering abuse at the hands of her husband, she desperately seeks understanding – her own and ours. Handling snakes, she explains, is “one half faith in the Holy Spirit and one half faith in modern doctors.” Combining humor, traditional Appalachian music, and personal reflections on the nature of life and love, Mud Nostalgia offers a touching glimpse of the beauty of the spiritual faith and the tenacity of the human spirit.
